LARRY HAGMAN WAS A SUPER ACTOR: REST IN PEACE

The late Larry Hagman in SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE
Sad day today, as actor LARRY HAGMAN, known mostly for playing a good guy on I DREAM OF JEANNIE and a beloved bad guy on DALLAS, passed away.

Between Major Nelson and J.R. Ewing, Hagman played a vast array of characters. His turn as a perverted antagonist ambulance driver in MOTHER JUGS & SPEED stands out.

But perhaps his cameo as a horny Army Major in SUPERMAN can act as a bridge between playing nice guys and endearingly selfish ones. Or maybe it's just a fun cameo that needed pointing out today: Hagman's part is a neat surprise whenever revisiting this 1970's superhero classic.
Valerie Perrine fakes injury
Towards the end of SUPERMAN, Gene Hackman's sidekick Ned Beatty has to distract the Army by setting up a phony accident where bombshell Valerie Perrine lays on the highway...

Hagman's Major has to make a decision.
Larry Hagman's Major is a man in charge
SERGEANT: She's having trouble breathing, sir. What do you think?
MAJOR: Well, I suggest a vigorous chest message and if that doesn't work, mouth to mouth.
The sergeant begins to comply, and then the Major steps up:
MAJOR: I wouldn't have one of my men prepared to do what I wouldn't do myself.

  1. R.I.P.

When I watched Superman a few months ago dusting off the DVD and Larry Hagman pops up I wanted to cheer! I seem to always forget about him in this movie and he's freaking hilarious. First off when you see him you want to laugh because he still looks like the young major in I DREAM OF JEANNIE, youthful, and not yet the seasoned J.R. Ewing. Just an awesome cameo.

I DREAM OF JEANIE was a staple of my childhood. From black and white to color, it was one of the shows that kept me sane as a kid. To be honest I never watched DALLAS, not one single episode. Even when it came to Who shot J.R.? My only curiosity about the show was when there was a news story about Larry Hagman made a bet in Vegas on Who shot J.R.? and he wasn't telling who he placed his bet on.

Anyway I'll always have the theme song from I DREAM OF JEANNIE when I think of Larry Hagman, and him yelling, "Jeannie!?!"

    Not such a bad thing.

    Rest in Peace good sir.
