It wasn’t an Apollo episode necessarily, but I just liked the episode a lot, I thought it kind of left with this kind of mystical feeling of hope, of something greater out in the universe. I love the feeling of that. And I thought the original two-hour movie was quite extraordinary. It gave me a chance to do something a little more: and obviously they followed on the footsteps of dealing with his… Apollo had a son… I actually begged for them to leave my son in Battlestar, at the beginning with Jane Seymour, because I just felt like the Starbuck character, and all these other characters, were getting more interesting things to do, and I thought I needed something to hold onto, I felt, that would give my character an opportunity for some dramatic possibilities.<br /> <br /> And one of the things I thought would open up at least an area of interest was to have a son, which nobody else on the show had, so, I really wanted them to keep Noah Hathaway in the show, even though I think they were talking about exiting that character... height: 150px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 200px;" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lost Warriors</td></tr> </tbody></table> And the “Shane” episode, again, he deals with the mother and the son and that whole relationship thing that, you know, that’s a good place for Apollo to show himself a little bit, find out a little about who he is, because he’s kind of like… Just like Adama… You know… He’s that father that we all wished we had… and Loren Greene was the father we all wished we had and Apollo was kind of a version of that, so I think that was smart to do.<br /> <br /> But I did think the original show needed to get more into exploring the life and death challenges of surviving in space, every day, and get into the community of Battlestar, rather than just being on the ship and running down to this planet or that planet, which is fine to do but I think the best shows in the beginning, that I loved the most, are where we were trying to help people survive, and dealing with the ups and downs of trying to rebuild communities, and trying to deal with the logistics of surviving and all the stories that would come from that.<br /> <br /> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; He’s the guy that, when all else is failing, and everyone wants to give up, he’s the guy who comes and doesn’t give up. Not take away who they were, but just to bring a little more balance into the characters. But as the show went on, we got to see their humanity, we got to see a deeper part of who these characters were, and then we slowly bonded to these characters, and fell in love with these characters as well...<br /> <br /> So in a sense they started out making the characters very conflicted, and in some cases unlikable, and then we grew to love them, and we grew to love the relationships. Billy, played by Jackson Nicoll, is perfectly cast. He looks like the kind of kid you’d never imagine starring in a movie… The last child left at an orphanage. And the subtle cantankerous lines that, even in this completely exaggerated role, aren’t far from how certain old men (you may even be related to one) behave: using their advanced age to get away with just about anything – a perfectly suited Jackass scheme that results in an engaging, and surprisingly laidback, experience.<br /> <div style="text-align: left;"> </div>

It’s overlong and means close to nothing except what Michael Fassbender’s title character wants to do with Laura (Penélope Cruz), the all-engrossing love of his life… And that’s about as <i>deep</i> as the movie gets…<br /> <br /> With two hours of treadmill conversations between The Counselor, a lawyer trying his hand at drug trafficking, and several people including sympathetic drug lord Reiner who, played by Javier Bardem, resembles a Spanish John Cassavetes with electro-shocked hair and Brad Pitt’s Westray, a roguish connection describing the dark future Counselor faces if things go wrong… And they do, pretty fast… at which point the music gets tenser but the pace, with a few ultra-violent deaths aside, continues in the same dull fashion…<br /> <br /> Cameron Diaz, as Malkina, tries the hardest as an evil rich femme fatale with a penchant for bloodthirsty cheetahs, icy diatribes, surreptitious manipulation and double-crossing, but she lacks worthy prey. Even Fassbender’s Counselor, who risks everything... including the woman he loves... remains in sleep mode throughout, as the morally ambiguous<i> </i>main character (<i>"way in over his head"</i>) is an essential part of the Film Noir/Neo Noir/Steamy Thriller template, but they <i>must</i> have something to lose – that the audience actually cares about... The worst thing is he’s mostly stuck providing stock reactions to other characters, ranging from beaten slaves to formidable slavers.<br /> <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;"> <br /></div> <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;"> Director Steve McQueen (who should add a middle initial to separate him from the legendary actor because he will NEVER BE AS FAMOUS) <i>might</i> have been influenced by Spielberg’s holocaust epic SCHINDLER’S LIST… There's already a score of comparisons between both films. What’s missing in 12 YEARS are the reasons and/or motivations for showing the atrocities other than being a true story about the infamous Antebellum South.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;"> <br /></div> <div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin: 0px;"> In LIST, Ralph Fiennes's Goeth commits random acts of unfathomable violence that are not only examples of Nazi rule, but cause the protagonists to counterbalance in a mental game of cat and mouse. Here all Solomon Northup's left to do is witness the maniacal madness of Michael Fassbender’s sexually-driven plantation owner after surviving over-the-top henchmen Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti. One good scene has Solomon outsmarting a bullying overseer, coming up with a more useful idea that winds up benefiting the plantation owner. But this is too soon followed by a prolonged and torturous beating that keeps the story dragging within an exploitative and limited storyline. And while it's ultimately moving and historically significant, and Ejiofor does have moments to rise above the increasing and unceasing torment, Solomon Northup's plight feels more like a single prolonged experience with various characters and locations than a multi-layered biopic for the audience to get <i>completely</i> lost in, making those grueling 12 YEARS seem more like months... even days.</div>

Instead of an EXPENDABLES style cameo, Arnold plays second-fiddle, a graying-gruff inmate named Rottmayer, who, like James Garner in THE GREAT ESCAPE and Morgan Freeman in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, is the go-to guy providing “favors.” He also spouts a limited amount of exposition about this strange, impenetrable purgatory. Leading to several twists along the way… the biggest one revealed much too soon.<br /> <br /> In the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE fashion there’s an abundance of intricate dialogue – mostly Ray’s narration, centering on the prison routine and vulnerability. This also becomes a hindrance to the story. With so much explanation it never feels like the characters are actually stuck in a dire circumstance. Before the emergency situation, Captain Richard Phillips literally runs a tight ship, and, at least according to the film, he’s got a bad feeling after hearing they'll be sailing near Somalian shores without any backup – his unsure expression is warning enough. So, along with the fact this is a highly documented real-life story, it’s no surprise when two ragtag boats, mere specks compared to the gigantic freighter, approach quickly – the first of several involving situations has the crew trying to keep these “Remora” from grabbing hold of the ship's side, which would allow the armed pirates entry.<br /> <br /> Once on board we meet our antagonist leader up close. Perhaps the most unattractive villain in film history, it’s explained by the fact he’s no actor. Resembling an emaciated anvil-faced llama, half-morphed into a sharpened scythe, "Muse" is an edgy, unpredictable and surprisingly sympathetic foe who builds his own jagged momentum. Instead of taking an easy thirty thousand dollars, Muse – goaded by a more outspoken and lethal henchman – wants a couple million.<br /> <br /> The best scenes occur aboard the freighter as the Somalian pirates, along with a poker-faced Phillips, descend into the lower decks to find the missing (or rather, hiding) crew... Then, once the pirates kidnap Philips alone, cramped in a lifeboat resembling a mini submarine, the intensity continues – Hanks wields his reliable chops and, despite some obviously-written dialogue, the spitfire conversations between the good guy and the baddies enhance the contained, claustrophobic, do-or-die atmosphere…<br /> <br /> Sporadic alleviation from the Navy Seals aside, the third act, unlike more energetic scenes aboard the big ship, is a prolonged nail-biting experience that you might wish resolved... a lot quicker.

Man, it was exciting to be there – a major, old-time Hollywood production starring Sean Connery with an International cast and a huge European crew. The American train sequences were also filmed in Madrid at an old Spanish rail station. <br /> <br /> My palace scenes were at the Alcazar in Seville. Originally a Moorish fortress, after Ferdinand II conquered Spain in 1248, the Alcazar was renovated as the palace for the Kings of Castille. Seville was a beautiful location. The polo match was in an Alcazar courtyard. That's legendary stuntman Terry Leonard crashing the bikes in the beginning of my scene there. I remember waiting a long time all set up and ready to go, with John being frustrated because our unflappable British cinematographer Billy Williams wouldn't shoot until the sun was just right. Billy shot several classic Ken Russell films (including WOMEN IN LOVE) as well as the famous Iraq opening of THE EXORCIST. He can be seen in THE WIND AND THE LION's opening scene as the white-haired English Nobleman having tea with Candace Bergen just before he gets shot by the marauding Berber bandits and mutters an exasperated, "Damn."<br /> <br /> The men playing the slaves pulling the carriage were U.S. Marines stationed in Spain. They were good guys and great sports about doing that scene. They were in some military sequences as well. World War… Now that would be something to go out on")... How many takes for this?</u></span><br /> <br /> John got a lot of coverage for that scene. I think it was shot in some old Embassy building in Seville. What I remember most is hanging out with the guys – Geoffrey Lewis (Clint Eastwood's sidekick in a bunch of movies, among other notable roles in his long career), Roy Jenson (bad-ass character actor in dozens of classic films including CHINATOWN), and Steve Kanaly who was closer to my age and just starting out as well.<br /> <br /> After the movie was released, I had an actor friend remark that he thought that was my best scene. Since I had no lines in that scene, I thought it was kind of a dubious compliment – but he said because of how I listened and reacted, he thought I was the focus of the scene – that my character was planning something important – he could see Dreighton's inner life, his political aspirations and future schemes… or maybe it was just a passive/aggressive dig and my friend was jerking me around. Part of it was shot in Seville and the rest in Almeria, Spain, where Sergio Leone shot his famous Clint Eastwood westerns. It took several days, and I watched a lot of the filming. When I wasn't working I was usually on the set, because it was fascinating to watch the work and spend time with all the amazing people involved.<br /> <br /> I mean, imagine, besides Sean Connery, Brian Keith, and Candace Bergen, I got to hang with legendary writer/director/actor John Huston! And he was a great general – always in charge but fun, easy-going, approachable… and tough when he had to be. He knew what he wanted but trusted his "troops" and specialists to do their jobs.<br /> <br /> I don't remember any tension on the set. John loved being there and doing what he was doing… although it did become more stressful toward the end of filming in Spain. They visited London and came to supper, I remember! I kept in touch with his girlfriend for a long while. She told me when he had done a pilot for a new television drama in The States and was hoping it was going to be a success… The Drama turned out to be DALLAS!<br /> <br /> <u>JOHN MILIUS</u>: We got on very well. He had fallen in love with me in A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA [pictured below] and sent for me when he was casting in London… I remember my agents calling me with a very short time to get myself prepared! I was wearing my kilt that day and really didn’t have time to get ready for a casting! I definitely think he had a very soft spot for me! I also tried to keep in touch with him but with difficulty. I don’t believe he ever got my letters. He did say that he was working on another project that I would be perfect for but it never materialized. <u>DARRELL FETTY</u>: I knew his girlfriend [Carolyne McCoy] very well... We spent a lot of time together.
