Title: THE PINK PANTHER Year: 1963 Rating: ***1/2
|
Blake Edwards' original THE PINK PANTHER refers to a diamond that drives the overall character-driven plotline of a suave diamond thief romancing a rich princess: so David Niven's the main player while Peter Ustinov was originally cast as his French foil, Inspector Clouseau...
And while it's impossible imaging anyone but Peter Sellers in the iconic role, it technically makes sense that someone not as young, likeable and downright hilarious would have existed within the original/intended storyline...

Niven's in cahoots with Clouseu's wife, who, played by Capucine, is using her husband to team with her lover to steal the princess's priceless diamond: all guests at a central Italian ski-resort hotel...
Overall creating more of a romantic comedy/bedroom farce than the kind of fast-paced crime-caper it's known for... where Capucine betraying a stuffy old lawman like Ustinov would've made more sense...

But as miraculous last-minute fate would have it, Peter Sellers famously steals the entire picture with his deadpan French-accent-delivery and surprisingly-subtle physical comedy, actually underplaying an otherwise serious, case-driven inspector oblivious to his own shortcomings...
The classic spinning-globe sequence aside, some of the funniest Clouseau moments don't involve falling over or running into things, and unless paying close attention to everything he's up to, you'll miss some brilliant moments: like the feline embarrassment after every clumsy action, sometimes even attempting to passive-aggressively blame his surrounding French officers...

Throw in American heartthrob Robert Wagner as Niven's scheming nephew also targeting gorgeous princess Claudia Cardinal, and a lot of frantic old-school-slapstick/running-around, director Blake Edwards created an elaborate Swinging-60's roundabout showcase of classy/sophisticated schemers...
Who were obviously never intended to have been completely overshadowed by the one character hell-bent on derailing what was supposed to be their very own ride.
