hospitals are the place to be: The cool white walls, the medicine, the 
wise doctors and those lovely nurses – it’s a sublime safe haven where 
hearts can beat comfortably.<br />

So when Jamie Lee 
Curtis... reprising her role as sole surviving ingénue Laurie Strode on 
the same night, Halloween... awakes in a hospital room, she has nothing 
to worry about, right? <br />

The latter, played by future LAST STARFIGHTER Lance Guest, warms up
 to a recovering Laurie while Leo Rossi has both leering eyes on Pamela 
Susan Shoop… Their sizzling "jacuzzi" scene is tops in the body count 
horror canon. And while Curtis lays around till the 
scorching 11th hour climax, the “heroic” stature goes to Donald 
Pleasence as Dr. Sam Loomis…<br />

Along with several oblivious police 
officers, Loomis, in a Noir fashion, is on Myer's trial through the dark
 Halloween streets: he alone knows the story behind the mysterious 
suburban killer, and no one else is buying it.  <br />
<br />
With 
the return of camera-gliding cinematographer Dean Cundey, produced, 
co-written (with Debra Hill) and scored by John Carpenter and directed 
by Rick Rosenthal, HALLOWEEN II is a clean slate for the viewing 
audience and a chance for Michael Myers to be even more present and 
menacing: covering the ground he broke in the original.

First off, let's note that the gory Rob Zombie reboot of HALLOWEEN is more Exploitation than Horror, using a fleshed-out prologue to delve into the abused life of young Michael Myers, wherein the original quickly and effectively maneuvers within the kid's point-of-view until he does something that will, a decade later, make an autumn leafy-lawn suburban neighborhood a bad place to dwell on October 31st...<br />

Thus, in an implied Hitchcock fashion, using a groundbreaking smoothly gliding camera carried by a human as opposed to rolling along movie-looking dolly-tracks... giving the impression everyone is being stalked and hunted... the entire chilling experience wastes no time... HALLOWEEN is almost like a sparse kind of modern windy, empty streets Western combined with Film Noir elements, since it... despite the pot smoking and some loose sexual behavior... has a 1950's small town vibe...<br />
<br />
In that, some of the acting can be a bit... noticeable, with the exception of friendly cop Charles Cyphers and the always-effective British character actor Donald Pleasence as Dr. Sam Loomis, the same name as Janet Leigh's "back with the nuts and bolts" boyfriend in PSYCHO...<br />
<br />
And of course, the leading scream queen ingenue is Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of shower-death famous Janet, beginning a career of horror films for the next few years: while sadly, PSYCHO pigeon-holed mom into random work on the big and small screen, daughter was just getting cinematically started (both would appear in Carpenter's fantastic 1980 ghost story, THE FOG).<br />

Paranoid as she is, and unlike her airhead girlfriends, Jamie's Laurie Strode is ultimately tough and firm, her main motivation to protect a little boy and girl from a mask-wearing "Shape" that makes HALLOWEEN really work since we only see the formidable antagonist sporadically in the daylight until he's viciously palpable at night.<br />

And instead of picking-off a handful of teens like in countless suburban "body count" horror flicks to follow, all inspired by HALLOWEEN, there's only Nancy Loomis, PJ Soles and one boyfriend in genuine danger.<br />

Basically, no demise is a gratuitous throwaway: every single body count counts... although more victims would have been a nice treat, which <i>would</i> occur in the entertaining 1981 sequel, continuing on the same night and bringing Michael Myers inside a somewhat busy hospital, giving him plenty of folks to haunt and slaughter. '<br />
<br />
The ominous soundtrack is written and composed by director Carpenter (as most of us know, he scores his own projects), and like that camera, the keyboard moves things along, while the main score is reminiscent of THE EXORCIST theme... Not bad since both films wield more than just jolty shock value: HALLOWEEN has a cursed vibe built-in from the onset, making even some of the slower, awkward moments ultimately payoff since, like the roaming Dr. Loomis, the audience knows what (never <i>when</i>) is coming around the bend. Making these poor, simple teenage girls HALLOWEEN night a menacing, formidable nightmare... on-screen. "He really enjoyed the collaboration we were giving to him," PJ Soles says of Carpenter. "And we all felt like part of the team." And that aura is another thing that separates the original from the sequels. A tight, palpable, genuine unity. As everything, from living to dying, happens for a reason. Even when a lot more is expected.

 know. When we did go those three weekends to his house, I was just 
amazed that his entire dining room, all four walls were covered with the

Every single shot had been 
drawn, and penciled, by Brian... And I was just amazed. It was a “comic 
book” of the entire movie. So it was very pre-planned, except for those 
little incidents. One
 scene comes to mind when he pulled me in…<br />

When Amy Irving is hanging a 
star in the gym, getting ready for the prom and Nancy and I are standing
 there, and whispering, and she’s telling me she has a secret, and I’m 
telling her, “Come on, tell me, I’m your best friend.” He gave us five 
minutes to do that scene. He said, “We’re gonna break for lunch, but if 
you can think of something to show that you guys are best friends, and 
she knows something you don’t, then go for it.” And we shot that, and 
got it in one take. I never thought he was going to keep that in because
 it went so fast. It went “Whoosh” and yet, you know, he really didn’t 
need to do that but he let us do it and it was fine.<br />

John Carpenter on the other hand was very collaborative. He would talk 
about your character. And “What did you want to do here?” And “We’re 
thinking of this” and “Whatever you want to add.”<br />

And, like in the 
beginning, walking out of the schoolyard, there was no dialog there; it 
was just directions in the script when they were walking out of the 
school. But he wanted to put something. And when he got it, he would 
say, “That was great” or, you know… He was very enthusiastic. But Brian 
would kind of grin and smile and move on.<br />

 Brian it was the bigger element of how the scene was gonna look. The 
cinematography of it and the effect of the scene, but not so much the

 to go out and pick up all the leaves because… there were no leaves…<br />

 they’re on the ground and we had two big garbage bags full. We all 
picked up the leaves. And
 it’s not like we could comment on other people’s scenes but you were 
responsible for, in your own scenes, whatever you wanted to contribute. 
John was very gracious and excepting more times than not. And he’d go 
“That was great.” But you never got a “That was great” from Brian. You 
just got a smile. And an, “Okay, let’s move on.”<br />

This underrated gem, written and directed by producer John Carpenter's collaborator Tommy Lee Wallace, has been maligned for two reasons: It has nothing to do with Michael Myers, the mask-wearing "shape" of the John Carpenter franchise... And it's much more of a sci-fi/thriller than a horror movie.<br />

Atkins and Nelkin wind up in a small town ruled by the mysterious head of a novelty corporation specializing in three simple but spooky Halloween masks: a witch, a pumpkin, and a skull... and because of magic shops, they're open all year round but are still waiting for that titular night to shine: Turns out these masks have powers: After a commercial plays a really creepy/catchy jingle, the children are promised to win a prize...<br />
<br />
But this particular trick is no treat, thus resulting in a rather gruesome outcome, while much of the film concerns our snoopy heroes investigating the town after dark, and then the factory itself holds the coolest scenes, replete with mind-bending antique curios even creepier than the antagonists: all created by or purchased by – or working for – head honcho Dan O’Herlihy, who delivers charmingly sinister monologues throughout. And right when you think it’s over, there are a few more twists around the bend.<br />
