But overboard director Lars von Trier throws in so many video clips (Nazis, etc) that in trying to connect with the "ultra violence" on screen, the story and character become secondhand as opposed to second-nature for Matt Dillon's Jack, made up like someone who'd be teased about dressing like "a serial killer" including awkward glasses and uncomfortably looking "nice clothes." In fact, his first victim in Matt's BEAUTIFUL GIRLS co-star Uma Thurman bags on his threads while literally begging to be murdered.  <br>

Same with his partner, ANT-MAN comic relief Michael Pena... Both led by Laurence Fishburne as their passive chief, sitting around within a quiet, practically vacant office building. Everything's so breezy in this lawmen's b-story, not much really matters. But the cops <i>are</i> a necessary distraction from Earl's annoying and cliché, semi-estranged, constantly whining family similar to (the far superior) GRAN TORINO, only without a house to inherit, or muscle car...<br>

Not only is each vignette about death, but the misleading title refers to the first story and that's it. Maybe if Tim Blake Nelson's singing cowboy was the blanket narrator it would make more sense...<br> <br> Then again, he's so annoying, maybe not. In fact, SCRUGGS is one of several of the main characters that doesn't only die but deserves death: The hybrid of a THREE AMIGOS style gussied-up Amigo, Pinhead from FREAKS, Jim Varney's Ernest and Kermit the Frog, the entire point of a surprisingly lethal crooner <i>who only looks nerdy</i> steps upon the second story featuring James Franco as a scruffy bank robber, titled <u>NEAR ALGODONES</u>. In this case, Franco's outlaw loner only <i>seems</i> more resilient than a timid and chubby bank teller played by nerd's nerd Stephen Root. There's some potential in the sparse-shot, Spaghetti Western tableau, but like the first story, it ends before it really begins (and concludes with an absolutely gorgeous actress, Grace LeSueur, in a quick but very important cameo)... <br>

And backing up to the repeated heckling of Roger Taylor's "I'm In Love With My Car," one of their greatest songs, ever...<br>

And five of those could have provided a montage of this 49-year-old man going from <i>wanting to become an old cop</i> to actually <i>becoming </i>an old cop. Random shots of basic training, or... something... anything...<br> <br> Played by a thinned-down, Jason Bateman-looking Nathan Fillion, THE ROOKIE is both an appropriate and ironic title, but he's on-the-beat too quick while we're introduced to the other rookies, all the right young age and each resembling a magazine model (the most beautiful hopping right in bed with Fillion's unassuming John Nolan, as if he were the former star of CASTLE instead of a midlife-crisis-suffering everyman). Without a chance to really learn about this guy, the shallow and cliché co-stars are forced upon us — feeling like <i>yet another cop series</i> in an ocean brimming with them. So while being promised something slightly different, THE ROOKIE is more bland dough from the same old boring cookie cutter. And worse.<br>

There are only three here that matter, and the man in the middle of these two sharp, savvy dames is much too young-looking, standard-handsome and, supposedly a once gifted writer, he doesn't seem experienced or timeworn enough to be a has-been at anything. So the girls have twice the work despite one being off screen for way too long...<br> <br> And with all the running around, whether A SIMPLE FAVOR needs a longer, more fleshed-out first act; a stronger, tighter second act; or a shorter, less meandering third act can be figured out after more than one viewing. And it's a fun, suspenseful, entertaining enough picture to catch again sometime. The main problem is these two very important characters, who are not only friends, but supposedly <i>best friends</i>, never had a chance to get to know each other deeply enough to make their eventual rivalry matter like it should. And as an audience, we can only care as much as they do.<br> <br>

Characters spout what's called Exposition Dialogue about what's gonna happen, and it happens throughout the action. Then they discuss the next/upcoming obstacle, and so on and so forth...<br> <br> But in THE LAST SHARKNADO — with a title that may or may not be a send-up on the Italian-made JAWS clone THE LAST SHARK — the characters talk about what they're about to do while in the process of <i>actually doing</i> it, making this <i>extra</i>-cheap-looking intentional epilogue a tedious, tiresome adventure that, even though meant to be bad (i.e. so-bad-it's-good), isn't very enjoyable even with a time-traveling device that could have at least been interesting. But no matter where they go... or rather, <i>when</i> they go... from Prehistoric Times to The Revolutionary War to The Wild West to the Beach Blanket Fifties, it's basically the same scene repeating itself. And at this point, the actual Sharknados are not only silly, they have little to do with the plot, overall. Which is a good time to quit. (Wonder what Ian Ziering, who looks very young for his age... especially compared to fellow BEVERLY HILLS 90210 veteran Tori Spelling... and especially Tara Reid, can possibly do next? That anyone would see, that is...)  <br>

With a barrage of family oriented plot-lines, including elder genius Hank Pym's ex partner helping a badass female anti-heroine named Ghost; or Pym himself trying to free his beloved wife (and Wasp's beloved mom) from an inner-space dimension visually liken to FANTASTIC VOYAGE and...<br> <br> Well you better get used to the sciencey stuff because this ANT-MAN hardly takes a physical step forward without a ton of rambling exposition while constantly reminding us of the CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, after which Paul Rudd's much more mellow and this time, lethargically-sarcastic ex-thief got on house-arrest where he spends corny playtime with his daughter...<br> <br> Thankfully, Evangeline Lilly keeps him centered while her dad (with his past catching up) really just gets in the way: Making the entire third act... taking place on the famously steep <i>streets of San Fransisco</i> (where Michael Douglas feels at home)... a prolonged chase-epic homage to BULLITT, and feeling more like a fresh start from all the previous get-the-important-device-back-in-time frenzy, rather than the winding-down of what eventually tries to be the same kind of urgent heist flick that the original was most of the way through. And Michael Peña, the comic relief, isn't funny. At all. Because he never stops constantly trying to be. <br>

Hugh Grant seems to be doing an imitation of Jeremy Thorpe or the template of Jeremy Thorpe being a hypocritical English Liberal Party member who is gay while trying to have his former gay lover killed...<br> <br> If Grant played the role more naturally or likeable, or realistic, it might seem like he was taking the wrong side in the matter, which would be contrary to the ultimate conclusion that, once you see the old, contented, real life, openly-gay "victim" Norman Scott smiling into the same camera that'd shot the recreated quirky-drama, it's obvious that A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL was, all along, one man's story and his story alone. The problem is: The best moments, during the show's addictive, rudimentary stages, had the old and young, powerful and powerless Jeremy and Norman both shown as flaky/flawed, desperate individuals and, for that, they were initially and equally intriguing. His brand of cocky confidence is narrowed into a bratty grin. And while critics are praising Donald Glover's imitation of Lando Calrissian, he's got as much to do with the story as anyone on board: He's just there. Even Lando's female robot literally screams for "equal rights"...<br> <br> And while Woody Harrelson tries his best as a semi-rogue named Beckett (the kind of clever/crooked mentor you'd think Solo would emulate to reach his maverick NEW HOPE persona), he's simply another ragged soul along for the ride. What's meant to be the most suspenseful scene is both a carbon-copy and contradiction of the Millennium Falcon asteroid-dodge in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. The characters are either sitting on board the old reliable ship or flying it. Neither matters. It's about as intense as watching someone play a video game, or playing one you've already mastered...  <br> <br> While SOLO <i>seems</i> to be about how the experienced, world-weary smuggler acquired the guts to take big risks at a young age, Alden Ehrenreich plays him so bland and lazy, any intrepid skills seem merely built-in and unexplained during capers both simplistic and overly-complicated. But nothing's worse than the random pockets of embarrassingly awkward silences: Whether it be after Ehrenreich fouls-up yet another glib one-liner, or Chewbacca waiting passively for something meaningful to react to, Ron Howard, in attempting to resurrect a broken engine, has pieced together a vapid, sterile machine that's not just a let-down in the inevitable grade-curve of the STAR WARS franchise, but is simply a lousy, cheap-looking movie. But when the movie based on the video game actually becomes like the video game, allowing the trio... Ape, Wolf and Reptile... to RAMPAGE through the city — thankfully for the audience it stays that way, and for a nice little while, too. The CGI is good, which is no surprise given how cable shows and even commercials all have equal quality special effects nowadays...<br> <br> But once again, the problem is — these creatures, no matter how monstrous, just aren't monsters. Nor are they even creatures. They're simply animals. Altered and blameless, dangerously enlarged versions of what they'd been (except one sprouts wings for absolutely no reason). And because of the sappy relationship between our muscular, huggable human star and the dullest aggressor, even in the video game (the wolf was always a personal favorite), the previous cool stuff is soon enough dead and forgotten. Leading to that aforementioned <i>one word</i> that... while it might be a stretch for modern audiences to absorb (at first)... could bring the classic Creature Feature genre literally back on its feet again...
