| Sam Neill in THE FINAL CONFLICT Year: 1981 Rating: ***1/2 |
Ultimately more of a science-fiction thriller than what began THE OMEN franchise with an EXORCIST-style chiller, THE FINAL CONFLICT is connected tighter with the arguably superior OMEN 2, providing murky, ominously-shot, widescreen body-count deaths beyond the rudimentary feature's haunted manor horror...
Particularly effective here because of the superior casting of Sam Neill as an older, more experienced, wealthier and deeply possessed Damian Thorne, who... with a haircut hybrid of Adolf Hitler and a Satanic mannequin... runs his titular industry while having meetings with the literal President of the United States...

The best sequences occur during the first half, involving a number of failed yet suspenseful assassination attempts, each involving those familiar Biblical knives... the only thing that can kill this adult Antichrist...
Actually a hackneyed McGuffin-device, more familiar to Vampire stories than anything in The Book of Revelations... like Thorne fearing the birth of the Second, or rather, Third Coming in child form...

At which point, taking an Old Testament notion to kill every newborn son, CONFLICT gets overly conflicted with preposterous plot-points that overshadow Neill's formidable yet equally charming performance, both flowing and contrasting neatly alongside British ingenue Lisa Harrow's BBC broadcaster (whose son's a deliberate dead-ringer for his OMEN 2 self)...
And is the last important big-screen role for Steve McQueen's former perpetual sidekick Don Gordon: whose wide-eyed-possessed, just-having-given-birth wife Leueen Willoughby keeps the last half as terrorizing as it should have been — without all the otherwise distracting Cold War Drama style distractions.
