ROBERT BLAKE & ROBERT REDFORD 'TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE'

Robert Blake in TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE Year: 1969 Rating: **

Having literally grew up playing Indian boy Little Beaver for the RED RYDER serial, and then half-Cherokee killer reigniting his adult career in IN COLD BLOOD, Robert Blake displays his usual charismatic gusto, here as a roguish member of the Paiute tribe and the titular character in TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE, hunted by a posse led by generational Indian-hunter Robert Redford in the early 1900's...

Had WILLIE pitted only Blake vs Redford, cutting from hunter vs hunted, it might have been the kind of Western road movie like Robert's own posse-hunting game-changer BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID... that also had a lot of characters but only centered on what and who's really important...

Robert Blake and Katharine Ross in TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE

Ironically, that movie's ingenue Katharine Ross is embarrassingly miscast as Blake's Indian girl that includes phony darkened face with bright white teeth and, side-by-side with Blake, who had killed her violent father in self defense, she ruins what might have been a suspenseful LONELY IS THE BRAVE style survival tale otherwise...

Also featuring Barry Sullivan, initially Redford's rural desert sidekick, and Blake's IN COLD BLOOD father Charles McGraw, part of a subplot involving a visit from President Taft, it's secondary ingenue Susan George's idealistic Indian reservation doctor's romance with the comparably soft-spoken (to the point of nonexistent) Redford that's the most distracting— in what's an almost completely futile late-1960's Anti-Western misfire, failing both as action/adventure and historically-realigned social commentary.
