MEMORIAL POST OF ROBERT DUVALL IN 'ROUTE 66: THE NEWBORN'

Robert Duvall in ROUTE 66: THE NEWBORN Year: 1961 Rating: **1/2

In two episodes of ROUTE 66 featuring Robert Duvall that starred both lead actors Martin Milner and George Maharis, someone winds up very physically ill and the boys have to stick around to help...

The episode where Duvall's most known is BIRDCAGE ON MY FOOT, as a heroin addict suffering violent withdrawals, using his intense method-acting realism that'd become his signature legacy... supported in a dingy apartment mainly by Maharis, who, a bad boy from the slums of New York, knows not only about addiction but the consequences...

Robert Duvall in ROUTE 66: THE NEWBORN

Moving from urban decay to a sprawling modern Western setting is THE NEWBORN in which grimacing/racist rancher Albert Dekker has Duvall as a hatched-wielding ranch-hand/thug so uncompromisingly unpredictable, even the boss slaps him around when attempting to take care of business...

Which involves Indian girl Arlene Martel having the cruel rancher's dead son's baby (flashbacks are needed since it all feels half-baked, like starting a book halfway through)... literally during a painful night that results not only in her death, but the kind of dated monologue-spouting 1960's idealism that turns what could have been an intense neo-noir character-study into an episode that needed not only more Duvall, but a lot more nasty things for him to do — to keep both the plot, and the dual-leads, on their toes.
