RICHARD DEVON ORBITS DICK MILLER IN 'WAR OF THE SATELLITES'

Dick Miller & Richard Devon in WAR OF THE SATELLITES Year: 1958 Rates: ****

Roger Corman's cold-war science-fiction thriller WAR OF THE SATELLITES puts two of his otherwise most intense actors in somewhat innocuous leading roles, thrust into space within the titular rocketship-like satellite where another Corman actor is used to his full potential...

Enter one-dimensionally-heroic Dick Miller and Susan Cabot: he was the murderous sociopath from A BUCKET OF BLOOD while she was the ferocious WASP WOMAN, the gun-moll from MACHINE-GUN KELLY and the manipulative SORORITY GIRL... both literally passengers in a vehicle belonging almost completely to tall/swarthy Richard Devon...

Who plays an initially serious-minded scientist possessed by an alien to take over the ship to doom mankind, foreshadowing STAR TREK episodes of a hidden menace that the crew-members eventually realize: providing tight pockets of edgy suspense, twofold: Devon must hide his secret agenda while the others, including young astronaut Jared Barclay, pretend they don't know a thing...

Ultimately providing a horror-genre body-count along with the orbiting science-fiction including neat-looking dutch-angle corridors and whooshing doors... and best yet, a film-stealing role for Richard Devon, proving to be Corman's most formidable lead antagonist before decades of cameo-role mobsters wasted on episodic television.
