JUNE KENNEY WITH JOAN LORA AND ROBERT REED IN 'BLOODLUST!'

Title: BLOODLUST! Year: 1961 Rating: ***

Novelist Richard Connell's THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME has been adapted countless times... about a reclusive island-owning hunter who stalks and kills humans instead of the big game he grew tired of... the best known version filmed alongside the original KING KONG and featuring Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong...

Unlike 1961's infamous BLOODLUST!, there was creative camerawork built into the suspense, particularly during the action-packed second half... while here the camera's stagnant on the four 20-something's that, having chartered a boat for a sightseeing vacation, decide to venture off onto a nearby island...

Not only does the complete lack of swiftly-paced direction take away from what's an intriguing enough premise to begin with, but you never see gorgeous lead ingenue June Kenney all that clearly... most of the action's actually driven by boyfriend (and future BRADY BUNCH dad) Robert Reed, who does have a wonderfully commanding voice that really moves things along...

In what feels like an hour-long filmed-location-rehearsal with expository monologues... and the comparably lacking performances of Kenney's THE SPIDER boyfriend Eugene Perrson, paired with Kenney's SORORITY GIRL co-star Joan Lora, doesn't help matters...

But there are enough creepy exploitation aspects concerning veteran actor Wilton Graff's villainous hunter... dealing with his wife's pointless affair, wanting to keep the young ladies alive for future sexual conquests, and the heartless slayings of island employees... that makes BLOODLUST! (most famous for its Mystery Science Theater episode) a guilty-pleasure worth viewing, at least once...

The biggest shame is that June Kenney, not just pretty but intrepidly confident and energetic, didn't have a director who knew he had gold (like her regular b-auteurs Roger Corman and Bert I. Gordon): overall, a more exploitive filmmaker was needed to get their lack-of-money's worth in what (and who) really keeps the viewer interested.
