JOHN THAW COLUMBOS DEL HENNEY ON 'THE SWEENEY: JIGSAW'

Dennis Waterman and John Thaw on THE SWEENEY: JIGSAW Year: 1974 Rating: ***1/2

The first of many STRAW DOGS alumni (ranging from TP McKenna to Jim Norton to Ken Hutchison) to appear on THE SWEENEY, and Del Henney makes sure he's in the right place at exactly the right time, singing at a club where John Thaw's Inspector Regan's having a drink, and right as a heist is going down, somewhere else, making him the unlikeliest of suspects, on purpose, as JIGSAW is basically Regan as Columbo, sans the compliments...

Sticking close to Henney's charming con artist Eddie Boyse, holed up with single mom Sheila Gish and pretending to be a dependable fatherly type to her young daughter, either Regan basically stalks Henney from place to place, including a parental school day, or he's trying to talk his woman/victim into revealing how the heist went down, making the entire premise a Howdunnit, and a pretty good one.
