But setting this "love triangle" aside, the tension between Douglas and Keitel provides the most suspense. And for those troubled and distracted by Keitel’s voice-replacement, he does seem possessed throughout the film (and to note: Keitel and Roy Doctrice are somewhat similar looking: like a pair of intense, stocky badgers): So perhaps it's not <i>really him</i> after all, and well, <i>all </i>other things aside, this is primarily, for better or worse, Fawcett’s ride, reacting as a three-way wishbone between two men and that formidable robot, the latter providing the true scene-stealing capabilities and keeping everyone, including the audience, on constant alert – making SATURN 3 an enjoyably entertaining curio despite its maligned reputation because, adding to the exploitive element is the mere curiosity factor of classic musical director Stanely Donen, who made SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, wanting an edgy science-fiction flick in his wheelhouse. Then again, two years following the very adventurous nostalgic double feature, MOVIE MOVIE, the old guy, despite his age, was at his final creative peak.

In fact she doesn't even want his... Which causes Jack to drop his skirt-chasing habit and he has but one goal: to get Randy and "friend" Dennis Hopper out of debt. And there’s something new around every corner of this diamond in the rough rom-com: Although the best moments have Downey by himself trying to wheel his way into, out of, around and about schemes with a wry likeable countenance, no surprise to his IRON MAN fan base. The best scenes have Bugsy (but never call him that) taking over tinsel town with bullheaded gusto, buying a mansion and car like shopping at a yard sale – and then meeting actress Virginia Hill who soon becomes his moll, then Achilles’ heel.<br /> <br /> The future Mrs. Beatty does a good job as the temperamental moll, but scenes where Bugsy thinks she’s sleeping (or has slept) with every man around borrows too heavily from RAGING BULL and gets in the way of the real story: Siegel’s vision of a giant casino in the middle of the Nevada desert, in a town called Las Vegas, as he spends too much mafia money on a<i> gamble</i> that might not work. Beatty plays the role with delightful energy yet he’s surprisingly formidable too... especially when dealing with people that owe. It's a shame the searing romantic melodrama gets in the way of the rough stuff. Then again, the one thing Warren prefers to movies is... or, are... the dames. <br /></p>

His young partner Bruce Davison is along for the ride and wants a better job and life.<br /> <br /> Larry Hagman provides the jerky antagonist as a hick driver with an overcharged libido. In the grungy station, the men bet on the daily deaths and flirt with Jugs, played by bombshell Raquel Welch, the dispatcher who yearns to be a paramedic. And new employee Harvey Keitel is a quiet ex cop: having been busted for selling coke (mistaken as something else) he’s named Speed.<br /> <br /> It takes over an hour before the three title characters are teamed-up, at which point the most intriguing aspect has Mother giving Jugs on the job training: she used Women’s Rights to land the gig and now realizes how rough it is. The humor is sporadic and there are some intense scenes as well – but the problem has too many missed one-liners and performances seeming catered to opening night audiences.<br /> <br /> The eclectic situations are interesting but don’t provide the laughs like other workaday ensemble comedies such as CAR WASH. Acting-wise, Welch plays the part decently enough – with a chip on her shoulder, she’s got a lot to prove in her new job. Keitel, on the other hand, is completely misplaced, more befitting a crime potboiler and has no chemistry with Welch, his inevitable love interest. And when Cosby shows the pains of being a seasoned paramedic, not trying to be constantly witty, he really shines: thus lighting the characters around him.

Romero's outing, "The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar," begins as a Film Noir tribute with a crooked wife of a dying rich man. Her young lover hypnotises her husband to sign over his inheritance. When he dies, he's not really gone since he never woke from the trance. Romero's in his realm with a zombie antagonist, but unlike NIGHT OF THE LIVING and DAWN OF THE DEAD, it isn't scary and the characters aren't interesting. But Dario Argento fares better with "The Black Cat," pitting forensic photographer Harvey Keitel against an eccentric wife and a black cat, whom he kills and... it, like the husband, won't die. Neither tales do the Poe sources complete justice, missing the master's mark of claustrophobic suspense, but the Argento story is at least enjoyable: aided by an important, and extremely sexy, cameo by Sally Kirkland.
