From low-budget film noir to big-budget spectaculars, in Golden Age Hollywood there are rarely not-perfect-looking actresses, like in the case of secondary/good girl Cyd Charisse, countering scene-stealing cheating fatale Audrey Totter in the murder mystery thriller TENSION, centering on the mousiest of mousy drug store clerks who Totter replaces with alpha-male Lloyd Gough...
It's impossible to believe that Richard Basehart would remain in the kind of vengefully lustful state of murdering his wife when, only hours after Totter splits, Charisse... looking like a brunette supermodel straight from a fashion magazine... appears instantly smitten outside a new bachelor pad: where he'd assumed a fake identity to surreptitiously off both his wife and her lover...

Eventually, most of the picture involves token investigative cop Barry Sullivan flanked by partner William Conrad... the first had awkwardly cold-opened the film in the kind of documentary-like narration used in many noirs, explaining the title with use of a rope representing how he moves in on his culprits... but there's little TENSION here as he dates instead of manipulates the ever-flirtatious Totter, whose boyfriend was murdered with Basehart getting primary wrong-man blame...
It's far too obvious the nefarious Audrey's guilty, so the mystery element is deleted while Charisse mostly looks fantastic beside Basehart, who... with more central involvement in edgier noirs like FOURTEEN YEARS and especially HE WALKED BY NIGHT... basically stands around waiting for an outcome in what's more an intriguing melodrama than taut thriller implied by the title.
