Beginning with vulnerable and quiet new girl Cristina Galbó; chaste and docile Cristina Galbó; a mischievously sexual Conchita Paredes; and bullying older girl Mary Maude, whose tyrannical character overrides evil spinster/headmistress Lilli Palmer, whose son has two secret innocent trysts with the first two girls, and is a bit too predictably creepy...

That is, the ending of this highly effective chiller (with the high-end production of a British horror combining Alfred Hitchcock's timing and French New Wave direction) is the only real flaw, albeit a minor one: while the girls were actually supposed to look alike all along...
Featuring two surprising twists involving two "Janet Leigh characters" that, like in PSYCHO, only seem like important enough characters to last beyond the halfway point... as the real surprise is formidable antagonist Mary Maude (so docile in CRUCIBLE OF TERROR) being the final girl... kind of!
