FILM NOIR MELODRAMA 'THE KILLER THAT STALKED NEW YORK'

THE KILLER THAT STALKED NEW YORK Year: 1950 Rating: ****

THE KILLER THAT STALKED NEW YORK is a that not a who, and two movies in one: the first a noirish b-crimer involving pretty blonde Evelyn Keyes right off the New York City train with a package of smuggled diamonds that her crooked boyfriend is waiting for...

She has a prettier little sister in future PETER GUNN beauty Lola Albright having a secret affair with said beau Charles Korvin, and, once that affair's revealed, the second film has already begun...

Turns out Keyes brought more than diamonds from Cuba to The Big Apple... she also has Small Pox, so, since buried-lead doctor William Bishop's narration already gave us the lowdown, the most effectively suspenseful scenes involves her going to various locations from a hotel room to a doctor's clinic...

Making a bellhop, a nightclub owner and a precious little girl possible victims for when STALKED becomes an all-out disease thriller that's actually more government propaganda than pulpy melodrama...

From THE KILLER THAT STALKED NEW YORK

At the point where mandated citywide vaccinations (pushed by the resilient young doc and backed by the mayor) are practiced, preached and even protested, you'll think it's 2020 instead of 1950...

But that budding crime story — as Keyes gets more sick and desperate, vengeful and possibly even deadlier than her mobile illness — makes the central medical drama really matter.
