But instead of the open road, SUNSET is mostly at a nightclub in the titular Los Angeles STRIP where there's not much going save a few protests that includes fist fights liken to Western genre saloon brawls (while local bands The Chocolate Watchband, The Standells and The Enemys provide sporadic tunes)...

But this RIOT mainly centers on the father/daughter relationship of Mimsy Farmer, stuck in a shabby apartment with a lush mom, and veteran actor Aldo Ray as the chief of police, estranged from his family for over a decade...
At work, he's attempting to please the conservative local store owners... who want their businesses back... and some of the more intelligent hippies, promising to do what they (supposedly) do best: keep the peace...

Overall a kind of breezy hangout flick based on a real-life incident at the title location, the only genuine drama occurs during a 'freakout party' where Mimsy Farmer gets her drink spiked with acid, morphing into a sultry sexy ingenue (somewhat liken to HOT RODS) while brunette Laurie Mock (and Gene Kirkwood and Mickey Rooney's son Tim) have a pretty decent time, comparably...
And yet, going the REEFER MADNESS or THE LOST WEEKEND route of substances only causing painful reactions without any relief, there's not much difference between a good trip and a bad one...

Making SUNSET STRIP somewhat of a cautionary tale for youngsters... but mostly a way to convince middle-age parents how to open their minds to their counter-culture teenage children...
If only more specific energy was provided to the potentially intriguing characters: the cops don't have enough kids to bust, and the kids don't have enough reason to RIOT: which never happens anyway.
