ROCK HUDSON, ROBERT MITCHUM, ELLEN BURSTYN 'THE AMBASSADOR'

Rock Hudson in THE AMBASSADOR Year: 1984 Rating: **

Not to sound juvenile, since Ellen Burstyn is not only a personal favorite actress but one of the greatest, most genuine of all time... but she looks incredible naked, co-starring opposite Robert Mitchum and Rock Hudson in Cannon Films' first of two adaptations of Elmore Leonard's thriller 52 PICK-UP that, instead of a criminal neo-noir, takes place in the Middle East involving the Israelis against the PLO...

Where an aged and haggard Mitchum plays Burstyn's monotone, aloof, cuckolded husband, the titular AMBASSADOR blackmailed by a sex-tape between his wife and Arab stud Fabio Testi...

Robert Mitchum in THE AMBASSADOR

Mitchum's joined by somewhat benign sidekick Hudson in a complicated plot-line that involves more expository dialogue than action...  that ironically involves the ailing Rock (in one car chase) over Robert...

Who's merely along for the mediocre political thriller ride, ultimately proving one thing: that Burstyn looks as great as she acts, albeit filling space in what feels more straight-to-video filler than big-screen b-thriller.
