PETER SELLERS AND BRITT EKLAND WINDING UP IN 'THE BOBO'

Title: THE BOBO Year: 1967 Rating: **

By the time Peter Sellers became a beloved international star in 1964 after THE PINK PANTHER, he had everything, including a second wife who was his first trophy wife in gorgeous Swedish starlet Britt Ekland, and she appeared in three of his movies including AFTER THE FOX, where her spunky style pretty much stole the show...

Which almost happens in THE BOBO... yet her character's not naive and sweet but cunning and manipulative, and more beautiful than ever... playing rich Spanish men (shot in Spain) for nice things like fancy cars...

Balancing so many complications, she could have carried the entire story by herself... but it's her husband's vehicle... sort of... playing a singing bullfighter who only sings once, and never takes part in an actual bullfight, which would at least be interesting and exciting...

Instead, his motivation is to play the player, seduce the seducer, but he's Peter Sellers, who at this point, not using the slapstick chops that allowed him to land the perfect woman, seems to think he's an actual sex symbol in what's a hybrid of counter-culture weirdness and European misogynist romantic-comedy.
