MEGUMI ODAKA & ANNA NAKAGAWA 'GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH'

Title; GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH Year: 1991 Rating: ****

Before Toho's comeback GODZILLA MINUS ONE, which was an all-out tribute to American filmmaker Steven Spielberg's JAWS, the late 1980's/1990's Godzilla franchise was paying him tribute as well...

In GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA: THE BATTLE FOR EARTH it's an Indiana Jones inspired archeologist, and before that GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH uses time-travel straight from BACK TO THE FUTURE where a group of 23rd Century envoys wind up in modern day Japan, including gorgeous Anna Nakagawa as Emmy...

A first name and face equally adorable as Miki, who, played by GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE mind-reader Megumi Odaka, joins the tomorrow people to go back to 1944... on a Bikini island where a dinosaur was said to have saved the lives of Japanese troops under fire from the encroaching U.S. Navy...

Well Spielberg hadn't yet adapted Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK, but his name's actually mentioned since his father's one of the soldiers, having witnessed a UFO (the time-machine) crashing into the island... something he'll (as stated by a commanding officer) pass on to his offspring...

The World War II scenes are one of many elements in a GODZILLA film with literally everything, leading to what eventually becomes THE TERMINATOR since one of the future group's an android: at one point chasing present-day handsome hero Kôsuke Toyohara, whose Godzilla book was used in the 23rd Centry, and Emmy, who eventually makes a singularly hands-on action hero, turning on her two-faced tomorrow team to save today's Japan...

She winds up the sole pilot manning a mechanical version of the giant KING GHIDORAH, who the initial expedition's all about... getting rid of Godzilla so that Japan doesn't wind up being...

Well there are too many twists to mention... let's just say it's complicated on paper but flows nicely in-between the inevitable Godzilla battling its massive KING rival, twice: strategic smackdowns circling all the mazy, exposition spouting/plot-connected characters...

But that's not a bad thing, because the story's told well, and the people... including Odaka's returning Miki (not as important but still nice having around)... drive this multi-tier vehicle aptly enough so the titular monsters provide more of a necessary bonus than focal-point.
