SUZANNE SOMERS, ROBERT FOXWORTH & BERNIE CASEY IN 'ANTS'

Title: ANTS Year: 1977 Rating: ****

Television-movie originally titled IT HAPPENED AT LAKEWOOD MANOR sounded more like a ghost story than eco-horror/exploitation, so ANTS — that can either maim or kill after a few quick bites — works much better...

Initially discovered in an investigative fashion by construction foreman Robert Foxworth and worker Bernie Casey, restoring the exterior grounds of a classic hotel about to be sold from sweet Myrna Loy to crooked Gerald Gordon (like Melvyn Douglas and Kevin McCarthy in HOTEL)...

The latter resembling a nighttime soap villain, with a stunning trophy blonde assistant in Suzanne Somers, about to take-off with THREE'S COMPANY and who, although a smaller part than Loy's dependable daughter/Foxworth's loyal girlfriend Lynda Day George, isn't the main ingenue but does get worthy scream queen status...

As well as adorning the main poster with ants covering her breasts like a FROGS or, more fitting, EMPIRE OF THE ANTS style b-movie that this is, for the most part, equally as entertaining (also featuring perfect-couple Barry Van Dyke and Karen Lamm, disbelieving manager Steve Franken and Brian Dennehy as a bickering fire chief).
