YOUNG BRITISH BLONDE BEAUTY GILLAN HILLS AS 'BEAT GIRL'

Groovy jazz-soaked title sequence with Gillan Hills as BEAT GIRL Year: 1960
BEAT GIRL is kind of like two movies in one, and both are pretty great with the insanely gorgeous Gillan Hills, a hybrid of Sue Lyon's LOLITA and Diane Lane in RUMBLE FISH: All three looking dynamic in black-and-white while this comparatively neglected, obscure gem centers on teens crazy about the Stateside Beatnik movement, grooving to the groovy jazz score of composer John Barry (featuring his live-jamming John Barry Seven)...

And when these wayward/lackadaisical youngsters aren't hanging-out, the main plot centers on Gillan's Jennifer Linden, a spoiled brat of fifteen (fourteen while filming), who unfairly loathes her architect father David Farrar's new wife, a pretty twenty-something French girl — with a past...
Gillan Hills with Christopher Lee in BEAT GIRL aka WILD FOR KICKS Rating: ****1/2
An intriguing, fitfully cliché "stubborn/reluctant kid hating her stepmom" device has Jennifer investigating a particular location seedier than even those darkened joints (one literally built like a cave and the other a "coffee bar")...

Enter vulture-like strip club owner Christopher Lee, the only big-name-actor on board, setting his sites on the jail bait teen right away ("why waste a good figure?"): but she's got revenge on daddy's trophy wife in mind...
Life is a snap for poor little rich girl Jennifer played by Gillan Hills
Yet it's not all tricks and talk with a REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE-inspired "chicken" race involving a young Oliver Reed vs our starlet and her friends: a gorgeous Shirley Anne Field (linked to lanky and boozing Peter McEnery) who in real life was lusted after by Elvis-like Brit singer Adam Faith, holding his guitar to conveniently insert random tunes...

In what often plays out like one of those semi-musical teenage rebel flicks sans expository songs, matching jackets and fist fights, and is the epitome of teen-exploitation including risque-for-1960 (mostly) partial nudity that involves auditioning exotic dancer Claire Gordon...

Countered by femme fatale Delphi Lawrence as a smoky and experienced stripper representing the darker side of what's alternately titled WILD FOR KICKS when the real show is in the actual title, BEAT GIRL, all seeming a mere excuse to introduce and/or exploit the intoxicating blonde-haired full-lipped Gillan Hills...

An underage starlet who, once of-age, Stanley Kubrick would disservice her fans by speeding up the William Tell-blaring Ménage à trois CLOCKWORK ORANGE scene (which is actually perfect) where she's one of the ice-cream licking record store girls: Then again, a clearer look at Gillan Hills would've been a major distraction!
