A year before GARDEN OF EVIL, an adventurous Cowboy Film Noir taking place in Mexico starring, primarily, Gary Cooper and Susan Hayward, the wonderfully sinister Ralph Meeker kidnaps, or rather, hijacks or you can even say, <i>bums</i> a pistol-pointed ride off Barbara Stanwyck, whose husband is buried beneath a piece of a dilapidated pier and as the tide rises, time runs out...<br>
<br>
That was the underrated JEOPARDY, and in GARDEN OF EVIL, the urgent <i>drive</i> is not that much different. Only Susan Hayward isn't being taken. Instead, her red-haired beauty with a load of cash persuades a group of basically strangers, who "washed-up" (boat broke down) in a Mexican town so rural not even good time gambler Richard Widmark can have any fun. Enter the "friendly antagonist," our third banana who's the most like Meeker. That being the usually-villainous, explosive human bobcat, Cameron Mitchell, going bonkers when his lusting testosterone gets the best of him: His postman only rings once...<br>

Turns out Kleiner wrote 1946's THE STREET WITH NO NAME, and what's said to be "additional" could possibly refer to the entire script in remaking Kleiser's source material, but instead of that nameless American boulevard we journey to the gorgeous region of Tokyo (and other nearby locales) where the city and its backdrops are a character all its own, inhabited by these shady human "characters" who, whether armed with a pistol or not, get wonderfully lost in the maze-like backdrop...<br>

This includes a wandering Robert Stack as Eddie Spanner, with a name so smooth and cool he's gotta be cool and crooked as hell. Bullying local stores out of small wads of cash, he's asking for... exactly what he gets in a scolding Robert Ryan, who winds up hiring the failed maverick as one of his own goons. Ryan's Sandy Dawson already has his heels dug so far into the post-War location there's no room for two people "running things," or even having a sole opinion. Leading the viewer into smoky backrooms and dingy apartments, where the gangsters plot their schemes.<br>

And at first, from when he wanders in a criminal shrug off the boat to the real locale full of floating slums clashed with vivid and vibrant, beautiful colors, Stack really seems like a man on his own; but with that voice, even for those not familiar with the original, he's obviously snooping around for some reason... For the Military Police, actually... Sent by Noir stock actor Brad Dexter to find out who killed a local during a rushed prelude. Sure this is a spoiler but anyone familiar with the original sees it coming. Although it must be said, Stack does a pretty good job playing slimy and shady... while it lasts...<br>

Exploitation  cinematographer turned director Gary Graver's meandering yet strangely entertaining, voyeuristic mess about  three rambunctious drunken men who go hunting, one of them, Cameron  Mitchell, bringing his passive son, Cameron Mitchell Jr. aka Channing  Mitchell...<br />
<br />
Along the way he meets sexy bartender Maureen McCormick  (Marcia from THE BRADY BUNCH) who, smoking in a dark tavern, has a kind of sexy white trash Noir going on, and it's nice to see her here, and sultry, sinful. Eventually, two of the drunks barge in, and one guy played by character-actor Peter Jason... whose trailer trash girlfriend back home, Danone Camden, is way too hot for him: until you know her real nature... attacks, and its here the film becomes what Mr. Graver  knows best, pure exploitation: added to be Marcia Brady getting raped.<br />

From the scant desert hunting grounds to the tavern to any and every location, it's all filmed like a sort of deranged documentary of human garbage...<br />

Not a character-study, but a demented crash course of detestable characters. So when  the suddenly not-so-passive son gets his own style of revenge against his dad and those fat drunks in the desert, there's finally a resemblance to an actual movie, which TEXAS LIGHTING is far from being, or even wanting to.<br />
