ANNE FRANCIS, DANA ANDREWS & GEORGE MAHARIS 'THE SATAN BUG'

George Maharis and Anne Francis in THE SATAN BUG Year: 1965 Rating: **1/2

On the television series ROUTE 66, Martin Milner played a preppy college graduate traveling America with no-nonsense, ultra-intense Hell's Kitchen-born/street-wise George Maharis... and while both are good guys, Maharis is a comparable antagonist by his edgy attitude, and that persona eventually made a far better TV-episodic villain than the few attempts as a big screen leading man...

The first being a lethargic neo-noir SYLVIA, contrasting from his famous ROUTE character that practically burst through the small screen... and THE SATAN BUG, originally offered to Charlton Heston, whose overboard style might have worked more effectively against what's director John Sturges's slow-moving/slowburn thriller with even higher technical stakes than the then-popular world-dominating James Bond franchise...

And that's the titular virus, stolen in a formidable-looking government laboratory heist-sequence within a missing (McGuffin) flask that... if unleashed before lackadaisically-meticulous security-expert George Maharis tracks it down... could cause a deadly pandemic of epic proportions...

But in such an unassuming Palm Springs location combined with too many visually-distracting rear-projection shots within the many  car-driving scenes and a helicopter chase finale, THE SATAN BUG... despite a topnotch side-cast including Anne Francis as the girlfriend, her trustworthy general father Dana Andrews, Ed Asner teamed with Frank Sutton as lethal goons, and an ambiguously-rotten Richard Basehart... feels like a b-movie potboiler awkwardly attempting a big budget mainstream premise.
