MEMORIAL FOR 'APOCALYPSE NOW' LEGEND FREDERIC FORREST

Memorial for Frederic Forrest as Chef in Apocalypse Now

In Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 Vietnam epic APOCALYPSE NOW, by the time Martin Sheen's Captain Willard reveals to one of two surviving PBR-boat crewman about his secret mission to kill Marlon Brando's rogue American Colonel Kurtz, Coppola's THE CONVERSATION actor Frederic Forrest loudly rails against the insane irony of risking and losing lives to "kill one of our own guys"...

And yet this imperative dialogue is heard either off-screen or in a peripheral wide-shot as, from beginning to end, Forrest's Jay "Chef" Hicks provides a foreboding backbone to each intense scene like, earlier on, when he and Sheen are chased by a jungle tiger, leading to Chef's explosive breakdown that soon fades out with the scene...

Frederic Forrest's reaction right before the Apocalypse Now helicopter scene goes full blown

A performance serving the plot beyond showcasing the actor's talent, Forrest has some rudimentary competition in Robert Duvall as the war-rapturous, Wagner-blaring Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore, strategically moving the central boat-crew from one point to another within marauding Huey helicopters: yet it's Forrest's shocked reaction (shown above) that instantly ignites this legendary battle sequence...

The same character who'd ultimately betray his own advice to never get out of the boat in a role both completely thankless yet for lifelong fans, thankfully miraculous: an otherwise relatively unknown actor's actor stealing a legendary motion picture that, unlike Forrest himself, will never literally die — although artistically, both will always live on together, forever.
