Scenes when Dern questions her or THE DRIVER or a more honest detective in Matt Clark are even better than the chase scenes: Which, of course, directed by future WARRIORS and SOUTHERN COMFORT icon Walter Hill, are topnotch suspenseful and easy to follow – either dodging police prowlers or one of the bad guys who winds up after the titular bad guy we're rooting for. And the most intense screeching tires occur as THE DRIVER shows his stuff inside a parking garage, with no one chasing behind: deliberate car-porn at its finest.
For example, when he looks into the hospital mirror during the riskiest of many risky heists in DRUGSTORE COWBOY, his slick black hair contrasts dramatically to pale white skin and then, with the turn of his head, the blood red along his forehead accents the fevered heat of the moment... The sudden contrast is reminiscent of the actual Chinese fighter fish i.e. RUMBLE FISH, the only colored objects (red) in an otherwise completely B&W film, steals the picture in Coppola's first of the two S.E. Hinton collaborations beginning with THE OUTSIDERS as the James Dean/Marlon Brando hybrid: A rogue rebel completely idolized by the two young central characters played by C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio... But to everyone beyond the gang, being a outright criminal as well as a charmer, if anyone of the cast of future teen heartthrobs (including Tom Cruise and Patrick Swayze) makes this otherwise teen gang melodrama, it's his character, Dallas Winston, who, unlike his ambitious RUMBLE FISH little brother character, Rusty James, doesn't want to be a leader or a follower...
And, behind the scenes according to the Coppola commentary track of THE OUTSIDERS; while it took days, even weeks, for some of the other actors to be cast, Dillon walked in and got the job right away (both RUMBLE FISH and OUTSIDERS will be reviewed on their own territory with an upcoming "Coppola Does Hinton, Twice"). The former OVER THE EDGE "post child actor" was fourteen in his first role in 1979 where his bike riding, chain smoking Ritchie White is the Dallas Winston of the suburban outskirts, again leading the underdogs (whether he's present or not) to victory. But it was MY BODYGUARD the following year that proved Dillon could really act, and it took the second Coppola/Hinton flick to underline that fact...
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNFIGHTER: Whew, that was close... A close call... For when a great thing is ruined by trying to continue it, especially when the original, through exposition by Jack Elam, has the character's futures all mapped out till the grave, it would be tough to make a sequel to SHERIFF keeping the same leading man in James Garner but with a different woman; this time Garner plays a rambling con-man the likes of his MAVERICK persona whose name is Latigo...
He gets off a train in the town of Purgatory, on the verge of a gold boom, or something, and Jack Elam is a sloppy fella working around horses, again, while Harry Morgan's gun-blasting daughter is tough right outta the box, played by Suzanne Pleshette as Patience, wherein the last ingenue was named Prudy, and Burt Kennedy is the writer/producer still... guess this is a RUNAWAY BRIDE type of sequel... but why mention something so awful?

And yet, alas, GUNFIGHTER isn't too great a ride unlike the nearly perfect SHERIFF. Garner's character has a few more layers than the no-nonsense lucky one-tick pony, but seems to be lazily revisiting his far more likable con artist from television yesterday...

And there's an overall plot to be had, somewhere, about two different groups of miners, between the town, involved in a two-year war on who gets to the gold first. And instead of being on the way to Australia, reluctantly taking the job... this time, of a Gunfighter... Garner's excuse is he's waiting three days for the local doctor to remove a tattoo of a woman's... an old woman's... name on his chest: horrible writing at its best, or worst. Not that GUNFIGHTER is the bottom of the barrel fare, but with dialogue that goes in circles before catching onto something, anything, that can provide a worthwhile little story, or even a scene worth watching, it all plays out like a TV movie that wouldn't have made it past the green-light stage if it weren't for the predecessor – the only reason why to buy the Twilight Time double-feature in the first place.
The strangest thing about the THE INCREDIBLE 2-HEADED TRANSPLANT... overshadowed by the following year's blaxploitation camp classic THE THING WITH TWO HEADS wherein football titan Rosey Grier and once Oscar-winning Ray Milland shared the larger guy's body... is that Bruce Dern, famous for playing crazy to the hilt, is, as a bonafide Mad Scientist, extremely subdued: Rarely has the actor been so calm, cool and collected.

Meanwhile, with sexy wife (and MUNSTERS babe) Pat Priest yearning for affection, Dern's Roger is just too busy trying to morph his bizarre experiment from animals to human. And everything connects in the middle from what occurred during a violent pre-credit prologue: a low-rent Warren Oates lookalike playing a psychopath is sentenced to the loony bin, eventually escapes and, after attacking the lovely blonde ingenue residing at a rural ranch/institute (our central location), he's shot, wounded and "secretly" captured by Dern and his scientist partner: thus the killer's head is transplanted onto a faithful, gigantic and sporadically reckless OF MICE AND MEN style village idiot/gardener's son, who, after dad's added to the body count, has no reason to live a normal life, so why not place a second noggin to consummate the perpetually labored, groundbreaking experiment?

Here's where the film really takes off as the human creature, literally headed by the killer controlling the bodily strength of this once gentle giant, battles Nazi bikers (the toughest played by personal friend, cult actor Gary Kent) while seeking out the kind of raging, raping and recklessly pillaging havoc that makes all things exploitation, exploitation.

And, as noted earlier, while hardly as memorable or iconic as THE THING WITH TWO HEADS (which had a corny yet genuine racial/social message), TRANSPLANT wields the kind of pointlessly awesome drive-in flavor where anything can happen; and most of it does. Added to that, our eventual savior/hero is none other than Casey Kasem as a normal (as opposed to neurotic) doctor, also providing radio voice-overs as the characters, along with the audience, are given necessary exposition between bloody bouts: Making Kasem another "two-headed" entity, only not as incredible.
Director Joe Dante, no stranger to the world of strange characters in bizarre situations, throws it all into the cinematic pot… including the kitchen sink… serving up THE ‘BURBS starring Tom Hanks during the tail-end of his comedy-only career. As family man Ray Peterson, there’s a REAR WINDOW vibe as our passive, debilitated hero faces a suburban col de sac while one house in particular becomes the prime target for morbid curiosity.
Much of the film has Hanks and chubby instigating neighbor buddy Art, played by GROUNDHOG DAY actor Rick Ducommun, along with Bruce Dern’s Vietnam vet Lt. And last but not least is cool kid Corey Feldman as Ricky trying to figure out what exactly is going on with these mysterious new neighbors, residents of the shabby manor looking a cross between the Bate’s Hotel and Frankenestein’s mansion.

The best scenes are in the buildup, getting to know the eclectic cast, after which Dante inserts so many “nostalgic” camera tricks, the tail begins wagging the dog. Which is sad since THE ‘BURBS was much better when we didn’t know what (or rather, who) lurked inside the house, making it difficult to tell exactly which specific genre is being parodied – as if the movie were making more fun of itself than any campy predecessor. And in one genuinely frightening image, when Ray witnesses cloaked figures frantically digging holes in the backyard during a lightning storm, there’s potential for the film to stretch beyond all the deliberate homage.

Will Forte has an interesting face, his mouth naturally curved to a frown. His character David Grant has very little to celebrate: His girlfriend dumped him and his father Woody, played by veteran actor Bruce Dern, is bent on taking a trip from Montana to NEBRASKA after receiving a Mega Sweepstakes Marketing Prize in the mail...

David knows it’s a gimmick to sell magazines, but Woody, a lifelong drinker with rudimentary signs of dementia, keeps physically threatening to walk the impossible distance… Not an easy task of course, especially given his frail physical and mental status making even a hundred yards difficult… Thankfully, David decides to give poor dad a ride...
Like director Alexander Payne’s SIDEWAYS and ABOUT SCHMIDT, this deadpan odyssey is a “road movie” epitomizing that niche; although most of the time’s spent sidetracked at Woody’s NEBRASKA hometown of Hawthorne...

This is where most of the story takes place; and his brother (Rance Howard) — and then later on, several brothers — aren’t much different in tone: passive and mundane “men of few words.” But Woody has a destination and the entire town thinks he’s a millionaire already...
Enter initially subtle antagonist Stacy Keach who, like Dern himself, is known for and reveled in edgy, borderline insane guy roles during the 1970’s and 1980s… His laidback yet investigative Ed Pegram also likes to drink and hang around the local tavern, and now there’s an agenda — he wants a payoff and Woody’s family wants some too; particularly two fat oddball nephews straight out of the Coen Brothers' quirky universe.

David becomes a shadow on the wall during in-house family scenes, and his barroom conversations with Keach are reminiscent of George Clooney and polite-for-a-financial-purpose Beau Bridges as his cousin in Payne's previous film, THE DESCENDANTS: a polite, friendly tone obscuring an underlying rancor.'
In a story replete with intentionally sparse characters, June Squibb is the obvious audience-favorite (perhaps too obvious, forced) as Woody’s sarcastic, foul-mouthed, hen-pecking wife Kate, stealing scenes mostly because she has the funniest lines, and is a breath of fresh air from the monotone surrounding her presence...

She seems more realistic than your typical actress/actor playing down to cliché (but not condescending) small town mentality the director previously covered in ABOUT SCHMIDT (where June was Jack Nicholson's wife)...
In fact, NEBRASKA often feels like an extremely subtle art film satire, while the plush yet primitive B&W cinematography turns the titular state into a rustic hybrid of paradise and purgatory… Some of the best scenes are the scenery, taking place outside Woody's passenger seat window...

In Will Forte's case, he initially doesn't seem up to the job (his successful brother's played by Bob Odenkirk and might've fared better)... A comedy actor, his deadpan often seems somewhat reached for instead of naturally holding back...
But (after a recommended second, third or fourth viewings) once you realize his fourth fiddle status to the location, and the overall journey, and especially to his father... it becomes more clear...

Forte's an awkward yet ultimately wise choice opposite Dern, existing beneath the father's jangily rhythm instead of playing loggerhead to his unnerving, unapologetic neurosis.
