Scenes when Dern questions her or THE DRIVER or a more honest detective in Matt Clark are even better than the chase scenes: Which, of course, directed by future WARRIORS and SOUTHERN COMFORT icon Walter Hill, are topnotch suspenseful and easy to follow – either dodging police prowlers or one of the bad guys who winds up after the titular bad guy we're rooting for. And the most intense screeching tires occur as THE DRIVER shows his stuff inside a parking garage, with no one chasing behind: deliberate car-porn at its finest.
Well before FIRST BLOOD came RUCKUS starring BATTLESTAR GALACTICA maverick Dirk Benedict as Kyle Hanson, whose scruffy disposition doesn’t make him very popular in dusty old small town: Wild-eyed like a predator in headlights, Kyle has a few creative tricks up his sleeve to thwart the hillbillies on his tail. Linda Blair is the Sheriff’s daughter who, with a missing husband in Vietnam, gives Kyle refuge: here’s where, surrounded in a big house in the middle of nowhere, the real trouble begins.
Action-packed from beginning to end, RUCKUS lacks the charge of the iconic predecessor, feeling more like a slightly edgy DUKES OF HAZZARD episode – and that’s a good thing. Dealing with post-war stress never gets heavy-handed, and the love story with Blair doesn't slow the pace. Although this came out before FIRST BLOOD, and shares the same plot and other characteristics including our hero leaping from a high area to escape impending foes, the David Morrell novel had been floating around Hollywood since the early seventies.
Other than gorgeous exterior locations and peaks into various small towns along the way, what’s there to do?

Well that’s what characters are for, but other than Martin Sheen as the grieving father, the tagalongs can be annoying: including an opinionated Canadian woman (Deborah Unger from THE GAME, yet noticeably aged) who doesn't try very hard to quit smoking; a babbling Irish travelogue writer aka the token neurotic; and an overweight jovial Dutch guy taking the comic relief mantle...

The script and direction by Emilio Estevez is hit and miss – while the shots are beautiful (mostly because the location is beautiful) and the quest is heartfelt, some of the dialogue feels contrived: reminding us it's just a movie... And each problematic situation… like Sheen getting his son’s backpack and ashes stolen… are resolved way too easily (or quenched with a breezy feel-good tune). But it's the moments when we stick closely on the face of our protagonist that it seems a worthwhile journey. After all, it’s his story, and knowing his son (in the film) is not only on his mind, but is (in real life) behind the camera: that is, if anything else, what really matters.
