Like ZERO HOUR! and unlike AIRPLANE!, things are dead serious but so corny they're just begging to be morphed into punchlines, including a sick young girl played by EXORCIST starlet Linda Blair, who'd become LOVE BOAT kiddo Jill Whelan in AIRPLANE!, being serenaded by a nun (Helen Reddy, whose name is used as a punchline in AIRPLANE!)...

A stuffy surgeon in an office talking about said girl... And our main couple; one a stewardess in buried lead Karen Black and the first-billed Charlton Heston, mainliner from the original AIRPORT, who, along with another AIRPORT veteran, George Kennedy, plan to rescue the plane that'd been swiped by none other than Dana Andrews, a jet-set businessman with a fatal heart condition...

The reason the plane starts going down, and why the pilots are killed, is because Dana's Scott Freeman crashes into the (side of the) cockpit, causing the famous (or infamous) visual of our heroic stewardess, Karen Black, sitting at the controls, an iconic moment in camp cinema: with her intense cross-eyes on fire and acting to the hilt, Karen not only steals the show, she practically owns it...

But the producers still got their money's worth with Heston during the 11th hour when he risks his life in a small rescue plane, eventually flying parallel with a cable "rope" connecting both: attempting to slide over into the cockpit to aid his girlfriend while injecting genuinely palpable suspense.
The passengers are, as is usual with the Disaster Genre, a bevy of semi-famous folk including three drunks, Jerry Stiller, Norman Fell and Conrad Janis and playing herself is SUNSET BLVD's Gloria Swanson. And although they don't share a scene together, that Noir classic's ingenue "girlfriend" of TOWERING INFERNO veteran William Holden... Nancy Olson... plays Linda Blair's mom...

And of all the AIRPORT flicks, not only does this have the most in common with AIRPLANE!, but it's arguably the most entertaining of the four-film series also including AIRPORT '77 and the franchise-killing CONCORDE: AIRPORT '79, which actually isn't altogether horrible... With a spooky harpsichord invading a cliche symphonic soundtrack, there's a bit of strange horror underlining what's considered one of the campiest pictures of all time: And another important bit of trivia that's already covered online, and isn't altogether original here: While Efrem Zimbalist Jr's jet fighter crashed into Dana's commercial airliner in THE CROWDED SKY, Dana gets his revenge... The FBI television actor is the main pilot in this film, and much unluckier than Dana was: In fact, the swarthy actor didn't have it too good in both features, making TV a much safer medium...

Football hero turned murderer THE TOWERING INFERNO co-star OJ Simpson follows the lead of square-jawed man's man James Brolin's solid yet sophisticated, thoroughly intense persona along with the always capable Sam Waterston, turning in constant one-liners, which can be genuinely humorous — even as he's climbing to an inevitably dire situation...
This trio of eclectic and likeable astronauts, using last names only... Brubaker, Willis and Walker... separate across a vast desert, taking a sporadic survival story backseat within their own central storyline. Meanwhile, an affable and lightweight Elliott Gould is rather out of place under the ultra-serious direction of Peter Hyams. A few years earlier, he reigned as flaky smooth-talkers under improvisational auteur Robert Altman in films like MASH, THE LONG GOODBYE and CALIFORNIA SPLIT. So this is basically the tail-end of Gould's prime/peak popularity...
As the snoopy and intrepid reporter Robert Caulfield, he gets first-star billing but is the first character forgotten when this multi-genre vehicle stops rolling. An important yet thankless role injecting sloppy Noir into the taut Science-Fiction realm embodied by what's based on a perpetual real life conspiracy surrounding the first men to walk on the Moon circa 1969...
So the titular vessel really doesn't go anywhere since the astronauts, at the last minute before ignition — occurring at a steady-paced fifteen minutes or so into the picture — are given a locked-door speech by Hal Holbrook, turning in a sophisticated villain role, especially while providing a beautiful verbal combination of patriotic reverie under a bewitching spell of remorseful repose — yet most of his other scenes merely concern sitting in the "Houston Room" with a finger on the dump button, just in case the idealistic Brubaker (Brolin) decides to go off script, and thus, ruin the whole show... literally.
The only real problem with the otherwise perfectly lightweight and entertaining CAPRICORN ONE is how quickly Gould catches on to (or that he catches on at all to) an extremely farfetched connection concerning Brubaker's wife (the always-annoying Brenda Vacarro), rushing the proverbial bridge (while literally driving over a real one) to have an ending point in sight...
Along the way, some of the best scenes involve character-actor Robert Walden, the smartest of the Houston techies, figuring something's off and not only making his buddy Caulfield (Gould) curious, but genuinely catapulting the plot into motion: ultimately involving an 11th hour "Guest Star" Telly Savalas in a dilapidated underdog desert biplane verses shiny and formidable government helicopters that, after all the brainy espionage, closes the door with simplistic and frolicking action...
If ever there's discovered a more sublime example of Sick Day Afternoon Cinema, to pass the time while enjoying passing time, let us know, because this ONE is the CITIZEN KANE of time-filling fluff... Guess you cannot argue with PREMIERE magazine. After all, they are... PREMIERE magazine. Supposedly godlike because they are... PREMIERE magazine... Well then, here's a piece written by a cinematic magazine atheist, at least as far as these dolts are concerned. For when the mag had a TOP TEN LIST OF OVERRATED MOVIES, which included, to name just a few, is NASHVILLE and... our subject at hand... EASY RIDER, the latter which also hasn't exactly translated smoothly into the Millennial generation albeit seeming, to particular youngsters, like a hippie music video travelogue...

But let's start off by winning an argument that didn't pan out for yours truly during a yearly shindig when a very important pop culture film historian told a young ears-pricked movie fan that Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper had a falling-out after EASY RIDER became a game-changing smash because Fonda claims he himself directed, or at least, co-directed the film that changed movies for the next decade, leading, at the very end of the psychedelic era, into what was The 1970's Renaissance, giving relatively young directors aka mavericks aka auteurs more power to paint their canvas how they wanted without studio-interference...
To counter the myth about "Who directed EASY RIDER," in both of our interviews with RIDER veterans, editor Henry Jaglom and actress Karen Black; the latter who said, among other things: "Dennis Hopper and I improvised… he was very brilliant and he put me in EASY RIDER"... it was beyond-apparent in their particular answers, never prompted by the question, "Who really directed the movie?" but simply related to the making of the film itself, exactly who the director was...
For instance, when we praised the incredible editing, Henry Jaglom (initially an actor who decided, after a few roles on GIDGET and THE FLYING NUN, to venture behind the scenes) stated that all his own editing choices were under Hopper's, and not Fonda's, "demands," and in 1977 Jaglom returned the favor: When an unemployed, drug-riddled Hopper was in hiding, films he was cast in Jaglom's anti-Vietnam indie, TRACKS. And if you experience Dennis Hopper's sophomore directorial jinx, THE LAST MOVIE that, like how Orson Welles' convoluted Mr. ARKADIN was described years later as a catastrophe that only a genius could make... And compare THE LAST MOVIE to the more standard and straight-laced yet neatly entertaining anti-Western THE HIRED HAND, the first of three Peter Fonda/Warren Oates collaborations: that was capably directed by Peter Fonda...
While watching and comparing the directorial style of either film, one (HAND) stands out as a much better, fulfilling story, the other more creative and visually flowing (MOVIE) within the revolutionary rhythmic style and road-romping cadence of EASY RIDER...

In other words, RIDER had one director, and his name was (& still is) Dennis Hopper, which, in order to truly understand the movie itself in the character-department, you really need to ask yourself: "Why is it called EASY RIDER and not EASY RIDERS, plural?" After all, there are two, not just one, dudes on motorcycles who, after buying and selling cocaine in Mexico, take a biker odyssey across America.
But Peter Fonda's Wyatt aka Captain America is who the camera is mostly centered on, and his perspective is given more levity for director Dennis Hopper to remain focused and faithful to, and he's the visionary masthead that grounds the baseline, while the scruffy, whining, complaining sidekick in Hopper's underdog Billy carries the film with inside-humor you might have to be "stoned" (which doesn't only relate to pot, and could be booze or simply a lack of sleep) to really comprehend the parenthetical moments...

Like, for instance, when he doesn't trust a hitchhiking hippie, Luke Askew, and/or his group of relatively shallow drama queen gypsy-types at a commune where, at one point, the ultimate nightmare of being paranoid occurs when Askew, who usually plays villains, stops Hopper as he's timidly stumbling over where Fonda's casually and comfortably eating, obscured safely behind a tree, completely unaware of the situation and, while the entire commune's singalong music is suddenly silenced, like the piano player in a Western ducks under his instrument as an unwanted stranger enters the saloon: At this extremely awkward moment, Askew asks Hopper in a nefarious whisper... "Who sent ya?"
At which point, the music slowly and eerily sustains as Hopper's Billy walks over to Fonda, sits down, and says, basically, that they gotta get the hell outta there: The humor is based on what we just experienced (and Fonda didn't) along with this seemingly secondary Billy character who is really the leading factor i.e. the pulse of the entire trip...

Like in a scene before the commune, after a subtle, hilarious gas station argument giving Hopper a chance to madly ramble, which would become his signature trademark years later. And when Wyatt, Billy and The Hitchhiker are sitting around a canyon campfire, smoking a joint, Billy politely, and genuinely, asks "Where are you from?" Then the uptight, forced-existential hitchhiking hippie basically shrugs him off, saying it doesn't matter. Wherein Hopper's unpretentious Billy ends the conversation with, "I just wanted to know where you're from, man."
Great stuff, and if the PREMIERE magazine staff, who (probably) made their minions add, in the IMDB trivia section: "This is considered one of the most overrated movies of all time by PREMIERE Magazine" as if it really mattered... Or simply to advertise their product... If this is how they do things, both IMDB and PREMIERE should both step back, catch a little buzz, and rewatch RIDER more closely, and listen even closer... tune in, as it were... to what Hopper isn't just showing us in a creative, directorial, aestetic sense... like, for example, jump-cut-forward "flashes" of a watch on the ground, visually representing how time means nothing: to the bikes gliding along the countryside backed by Steppenwolf during the opening credits; and The Byrds, The Byrd's Roger McGuinn, The Band Jimi Hendrix and other great artists: to a nightmarish LSD trip with two Mardi Gras (their ultimate destination) hookers... including Karen Black...

That, merely a few days after the death of scene-stealing Jack Nicholson, who made us forget about Hopper while Hopper made us forget about Fonda, and Fonda who is more the chief representation than an actual Captain in this EXTREMELY FUCKING UNDERRATED classic, if watched correctly... Like any great piece of art, you gotta read between the lines to truly "get it!"

Crispin Glover in RUBIN AND ED Year: 1991

RUBIN AND ED is a road movie about the road to nowhere, and it’s difficult to tell which character… Rubin Farr, a longhaired freak with boomerang elevator shoes or Ed Tuttle, a divorced businessman who puts all his faith, time and money in a pyramid scheme seminar… could be a bigger loser than Rubin, who, living in his mother’s apartment building, needing the perfect place to bury his cat, and hijacks Ed for the journey… But Ed, who met Rubin going door-to-door, has to return the car belonging to the group’s egomaniac leader played by THE CLONES actor Michael Greene.

What’s really surprising is that kooky Crispin Glover, a very capable actor in mainstream flicks like BACK TO THE FUTURE, wields his oddball persona without going overboard (George McFly is more offbeat), leaving most of the rambling, energetic dialogue to Howard Hesseman’s frantic Ed Tuttle, written and directed by Glover’s pal Trent Harris, and you’d think RUBIN AND ED would be a vehicle to let Glover's freaky behavior shine in. Especially since, in promoting the film on David Letterman, Glover, dressed in Rubin’s retro clothing, feigned karate kicking the caustic host in an Andy Kaufman fashion – and was banned from LATE NITE… for a little while, anyway.
But Hesseman’s Ed doesn’t have to worry about being punted by his loony sidekick...

Rubin drinks water from the cooler where his dead cat’s kept, and gulps down sweat from his odor eaters when both he and Ed, after the car breaks down, are lost in the endless Utah desert where Rubin hallucinates a gorgeous bikini girl and his cat on water-skis while, later on, Ed deals with bitchy phone calls from his ex wife, Karen Black’s Rula. Eventually, Ed’s constant complaining tapers down and a bond occurs between the two polar opposites.

The cast aside, the best thing about RUBIN AND ED is it never tries to say or mean anything in particular. Following the 1980's, there's a subliminal message about existentialism versus capitalism, but the characters lead the way, providing a unique road trip bridging bizarre arthouse and conventional cinema.
Seeing the wonderfully versatile Karen Black play four roles (or rather, three roles and four characters) in a TV-movie showcasing three Night Gallery style stories is a great thing. The first involves an uptight spectacle-wearing college professor who's seduced by her handsome, nefarious honor student. Without giving away the twist, it's a great episode because Karen's playing someone she's not, and you'll have to watch it a second time to truly catch all her quirks and mannerisms.

The next deals with two sisters: one a crotchety sourpuss, the other a sexy blond. The twist is way too obvious. Blame the writer for this, not Karen, for she plays both roles well.

The third, and most entertaining, is what the movie's known for, dealing with a woman (Black again) who purchased a foot-high spear-donning Zuni Fetish Doll. If the waist-sash falls off the doll, it comes to life. And guess what falls off the doll? The little bugger chases Karen around the apartment sounding like the Tasmanian Devil on PCP – imagine Animal from the Muppets on a killing spree and there you have it. So while this final outing is the scariest tale of the bunch – dealing with a thing too small and quick to kill but that can kill you… the first story's where Black's acting (as opposed to reacting) really shines.
A family, consisting of a strong-willed, serious-minded husband; a faithful wife who sets up a room with his typewriter; and their young son moving into a large house for the summer. It's haunted, and within days, the father becomes violent towards the son. The house has a strange past that overlaps into the family's life. And after an extremely predictable ending, the last shot is of the family members seen in pictures within the house: as if they'd always lived there. Sound familiar? This is very much like THE SHINING. Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick both should haven given credit to not only this film, but the novel in which it was based. Although since it's not very good... the suspenseful setup working much better than when the plot takes hold... and no one seemed to care to acknowledge it.

A nun serenading a sick girl with an acoustic guitar, a stewardess at the controls after the pilots are taken out... sound familiar? The weak ensemble cast of passengers including three drunk idiots afraid to fly, a know-it-all kid bugging his putupon nanny, and Gloria Swanson as herself, are all uninteresting and eventually forgotten as, during the last half Karen Black flies the 747 as boyfriend Charlton Heston, whilst in a smaller plane with George Kennedy, talks her down. A boring, pointless wreck, and not even that fun to bag on.
