ROBERT MITCHUM BUSTING ROBERT RYAN THROUGH 'THE RACKET'

on a let's-fight-city-corruption picture from 1928, and remade to
center on a then-current anti-mafia-probe, it's no wonder that RKO's THE
RACKET plays out so deliberately over-the-top, where Robert Ryan not
only openly admits to being the head of an illegal/totally corrupt
syndicate, but shoots and kills an honest lawman right inside a police station...
with a cub reporter witness only inches away...

In that, Ryan gets
most of the praise for a performance that's more 1930's teeth-clenching
gangbusters than subtle 1950's noir, which, for the lack of alleyway
shadows and femme fatales, many claim this feature as being something
other than...

Robert Mitchum and Robert Ryan in THE RACKET

Which
is an ongoing/never-ending debate on any b-crimer that isn't dreamily
melodramatic the likes of OUT OF THE PAST... segwaying into the other
Robert here in Robert Mitchum, the star of several Howard Hughes
productions, where, on the heels of playing likable losers in THIS KIND
OF WOMAN and THE BIG STEAL, this is his most solidly straightforward
performance...

As a police chief the syndicate moves around in
order to never press permanent charges, and with scene-stealing/ideal-driven good cop William Talman by his side, Mitchum doesn't simply breeze around with his handsome slow-burn cool, but really fits the part with
both feet planted firmly on the ground...

Robert Mitchum and Robert Ryan in THE RACKET

The
biggest problem (besides pretty Lizabeth Scott in a
throwaway nightclub canary/dame role) is that everything's too up-front, particularly with Ryan's scrunched-up mug exploding into
temper-tantrums....

In one reaction shot, Mitchum
seems to intentionally smirk at Ryan's overacting: playing more of a
head gangster's viciously lethal thug than any kind of realistic big boss, making
THE RACKET more a good vs evil fable than either noir or your typical standard
detective story.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgUDk0PshNV3iwPnV0vusOVjeg_W47qEl0VTlceP-Z4vWrLUsADoxhvVyxEJZLt-2nt3Hg5iBEwtnAhKSpjwfHUSHj7T1RLq_yDkz6fUvC1PQxtZOIhKGlGhvG5BkFdKtr9ppv0SlR_-oLPgRyM3TItzC_8JtcHo6nJeHgSIUKTeKqwAQ6XyX9iUZXzUE3/s1110/Screen%20Shot%202026-06-04%20at%202.29.37%20PM.png" style="margin-left: auto; pathetic way, without earning it beyond their looks. At one point, singer actually asks Quinn, "What are you thinking?"
after they'd known each other ten minutes. Meanwhile, as a b-movie, the low budget is deliberate, and mostly works... including
scenes of the boys trudging in heavy "Diver Dan" style underwater gear
with matte painted backgrounds. The technicolor is great looking, and
otherwise these are capable actors and actresses. But this oceanic
thriller is devoid of thrills, and pretty much... sinks upon impact.

After serving two years in prison, a paroled bank robber learns his brother was killed (shown in the prologue) by
the same mob that set him up. So he gets all kinds of revenge with the help of his former partner/sidekick while cranky gun moll Karen Black basically goes against the grain of the boys crashing various hot spots where the money's at (Sheree North would have fit this role better)...

The two main characters played by Robert
Duvall and Joe Don Baker seem so protected by the gods, there's little urgency or suspense since nothing and no one can stop
them...

Meanwhile, the targeted mobsters include Film Noir icons Timothy Carey and Robert Ryan, and THE OUTFIT has a Neo Noir template combined with a modern day Western's guns, guts and bravado. And about the only challenge is assassin Felice Orlandi, moving through night shadows after the small town boys do all their stealing and shooting in the daylight. Making this a kind of CLYDE AND CLYDE meets THE GETAWAY.
Turns out Kleiner wrote 1946's THE STREET WITH NO NAME, and what's said to be "additional" could possibly refer to the entire script in remaking Kleiser's source material, but instead of that nameless American boulevard we journey to the gorgeous region of Tokyo (and other nearby locales) where the city and its backdrops are a character all its own, inhabited by these shady human "characters" who, whether armed with a pistol or not, get wonderfully lost in the maze-like backdrop...
This includes a wandering Robert Stack as Eddie Spanner, with a name so smooth and cool he's gotta be cool and crooked as hell. Bullying local stores out of small wads of cash, he's asking for... exactly what he gets in a scolding Robert Ryan, who winds up hiring the failed maverick as one of his own goons. Ryan's Sandy Dawson already has his heels dug so far into the post-War location there's no room for two people "running things," or even having a sole opinion. Leading the viewer into smoky backrooms and dingy apartments, where the gangsters plot their schemes.

And at first, from when he wanders in a criminal shrug off the boat to the real locale full of floating slums clashed with vivid and vibrant, beautiful colors, Stack really seems like a man on his own; but with that voice, even for those not familiar with the original, he's obviously snooping around for some reason... For the Military Police, actually... Sent by Noir stock actor Brad Dexter to find out who killed a local during a rushed prelude. Sure this is a spoiler but anyone familiar with the original sees it coming. Although it must be said, Stack does a pretty good job playing slimy and shady... while it lasts...
Elmore Leonard said no film "got it right" until GET SHORTY and JACKIE BROWN, and that's after many of his books and stories were translated to the screen.

There are good and bad during that time, and this lies somewhere in-between. Ryan O'Neal is an unassuming drifter in a small Florida town. He's told to leave after bashing a local with a baseball bat, but stays for a job working a beach side motel, where he "befriends" Lee Grant and gorgeous gold digger Leigh Taylor-Young: who's nothing but trouble in a Film Noir kinda way.

The acting and story are fine (especially Taylor-Young), but the music... sounding like a kid's TV show with lyrics narrating the film and characters... is the real problem, turning what could have been an intriguing melodrama into a bland, forgettable one.
