As a television Executive Producer/Mogul, turned into an, at first, pretty good theatrical director: A great one, actually. Or perhaps THE FLAMINGO KID, starring Matt Dillon as a young Brooklyn card-shark spending the summer at a rich resort as a cabana boy, winding up boy-toy for Janet Jones and a wishbone for proud yet unapologetically stubborn blue collar plumber dad Hector Elizondo and crooked fancy car salesman Richard Crenna, was a great movie with a good director...
First with VALENTINE’S DAY, which followed a group of lovestrucks leading up to the Hallmark holiday – and now we have NEW YEAR’S EVE where a group of eclectic idiots await the New Year countdown in New York City… And unlike its cheesy predecessor, it’s not even fun to bag on. The special guest stars are introduced like members of THE LOVE BOAT: these include Michelle Pfeiffer, sadly looking far past her prime, as a depressed working gal who quits her job and with the help of flavor of the month Zac Efron, she’s given a tour of the city to accomplish her strange resolutions. Also on board is Hillary Swank as the person responsible for raising the New Year’s ball. Sara Jessica Parker as the mother of the now teenaged LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE actress Abigail Breslin, who longs to kiss her dreamboy at midnight. There’s Robert DeNiro in yet another “what’s he doing in this movie?” role as a dying man in a hospital; his last wish to go outside to make the countdown. Ashton Kutcher and “that girl from Glee” are stuck in an elevator, and wouldn’t you know it – she sings! Two couples race to have a baby on the New Year to win a contest. And Jon Bon Jovi plays himself – but with another name – as a rock star who’s ex girlfriend sulks around and… There’s really no use of setting up these stories since none of them amount to anything, and worst of all, they all begin with an assumption that we, as an audience, would care in the first place.

As a joke-after-joke "Airplane!" clone it isn't funny enough, but the characters are involving: like Michael McKean is an uptight intern with a troubled past who falls for gorgeous Sean Young, and vice versa. Other stories include Dabney Coleman, as the jerky chief of staff, going broke or a mob boss stalked by a zany hitman (Michael Richards), while the mobster's son (Hector Elizondo), in drag, is hit on by a love-lorn intern. Many other stories occur while Sean Young's dying of a rare disease - and only McKean, with a phobia to operate, can save her. Since you'll care about these people, the many missed jokes won't matter.

Instead of centering on a mismatched relationship between father and son, sharing equally with both talents, it's all about Hank's charming flake, seeming more like a Burt Reynolds character from the seventies: he gets all the women, all the time. Meanwhile, his salesman dad and put-upon mother (Eva Marie Saint) are newly divorced, and dad loses his job. It's at the very end - after centering too much on Tom's tomfoolery around an advertising firm... all seeming like a pointless Romantic Comedy without enough of either - that, after pop falls ill, father and son bond. Then it's done, and we're left with either a really misleading film, or title, or both.
