Thus, Alexander Black steals a movie that needs stealing since the beloved Tom, at this point, though still embodying that good old unique charm and a genuine ability to wield both an endearing smile and sincere pathos, resembles a cross between W.C. Fields and someone he's always been visually similar to, and who should've, at one point in his long, eclectic career, played his sister: that being GREASE starlet Stockard Channing.
But his determined discomfort is palpable enough to drive the story of an otherwise common man hired for the last thing he wanted to be part of, and, thinking on his toes, makes for an interesting "character" in a nicely flowing Cold War flick that's perfectly lukewarm... feeling like it intentionally settles for pretty good instead of Oscar-bait greatness, and in that, succeeds.

Travers, author of the MARY POPPINS books, Walt Disney would have probably preferred a frontal lobotomy...

Although we know the beloved Julie Andrews musical will be made, there’s enough suspense of whether Travers, played with an uncompromising, neurotic nitpicking by Emma Thompson, will sign over the rights, thus allowing... in her opinion... Walt Disney to make a cartoonish mockery of her literary work.

Flashbacks into her past show us the author’s family in Australia, and eventually the influence of the Mary Poppins character: Scenes with her banker dad play out like dreamy (and often nightmarish) vignettes... And while providing a nice break from the linear story, these segments distract from the pivotal Travers verses Disney relationship... Ironically, during Tom Hanks' heartfelt soliloquies into Disney’s own past, you’ll forget there’s anyone else in the room.

Emma Thompson does a pretty good job but lacks the snappy charm to make an antagonistic grouch fun and/or completely interesting… Then, when she does come around, it seems a bit too easy and contrived and yet, like Disney and his staff, you’ll be glad the inevitable change occured: her stubborn determination grows exaggeratedly one-dimensional and downright tiresome after awhile... Perhaps this was needed to make the contented Walt Disney struggle like a hungry artist instead of grinning like a jovial tycoon… At first Tom Hanks seems like he’s doing an imitation, but as stress piles on a much more genuine and resilient persona shines through. And don’t leave the theater till after the first wave of credits: you’ll hear tape of the real Travers laying down the law to the studio… Which must have been a grueling adaptation process, yet for fans of the cinematic MARY POPPINS it was, like all things of the artworld, well worth someone else’s struggle.

Before the emergency situation, Captain Richard Phillips literally runs a tight ship, and, at least according to the film, he’s got a bad feeling after hearing they'll be sailing near Somalian shores without any backup – his unsure expression is warning enough. So, along with the fact this is a highly documented real-life story, it’s no surprise when two ragtag boats, mere specks compared to the gigantic freighter, approach quickly – the first of several involving situations has the crew trying to keep these “Remora” from grabbing hold of the ship's side, which would allow the armed pirates entry.

Once on board we meet our antagonist leader up close. Perhaps the most unattractive villain in film history, it’s explained by the fact he’s no actor. Resembling an emaciated anvil-faced llama, half-morphed into a sharpened scythe, "Muse" is an edgy, unpredictable and surprisingly sympathetic foe who builds his own jagged momentum. Instead of taking an easy thirty thousand dollars, Muse – goaded by a more outspoken and lethal henchman – wants a couple million.

The best scenes occur aboard the freighter as the Somalian pirates, along with a poker-faced Phillips, descend into the lower decks to find the missing (or rather, hiding) crew... Then, once the pirates kidnap Philips alone, cramped in a lifeboat resembling a mini submarine, the intensity continues – Hanks wields his reliable chops and, despite some obviously-written dialogue, the spitfire conversations between the good guy and the baddies enhance the contained, claustrophobic, do-or-die atmosphere…

Sporadic alleviation from the Navy Seals aside, the third act, unlike more energetic scenes aboard the big ship, is a prolonged nail-biting experience that you might wish resolved... a lot quicker.

Or a young man on a clipper ship being slowly poisoned, befriended by a rogue slave who becomes his protector.

A more lighthearted tale has Jim Broadbent as an aged book editor trying to escape an old folks home. The wide-scoped stories include an Asian worker/clone in a BLADE RUNNER-looking future seeking the truth of her origin. And an even more distant time has a nomadic Tom Hanks aided by an interstellar Halle Berry to free his people from tyranny. A musical piece titled The Cloud Atlas connects things in a somewhat linear fashion – written by a young gay man working for a cantankerous has-been composer (Broadbent again), who may never get credit for the surreptitious masterpiece.

The three directors, including the brains behind THE MATRIX, hand off each piece nicely, combining romance, melodrama, and laser-blasting action... The pace only drags when one too many peaks occur without closure. The final payoffs, including Big Oil and Racism, are a tad simplistic and could have been dreamt up by a socially conscious sixth grader. But what makes CLOUD ATLAS never shrug to the epic scale is that each level has its own basic energy: you’ll not only want to see how everything connects as a whole, but how each person survives all that fate has to offer.

Both are tough but one is not only tougher – and a lot more stubborn. Belushi’s maverick cop Dooley needs some help busting big time drug dealer Kevin Tighe (has he played a good guy since EMERGENCY?). For help he gets a drug sniffing police dog (a German Sheppard) and both have plenty in common. Jerry Lee, with devil-horn ears and a frazzled countenance, wants nothing to do with human beings. Residing in the last cage of the kennel, he’s no team player just like Dooley, whose typical screaming police captain can’t straighten him out. Much of the fun deals with Dooley bonding with… or attempting to bond with… the troubled mutt – who aids in beating up seedy villains – while Dooley plays by his own book. There are plenty of action scenes and the kind of hardboiled humor you’d see in a lesser Walter Hill film (like RAW DEAL). When Dooley’s sexy girlfriend – the only person Jerry Lee listens to – gets kidnapped it’s up to the human/dog team to save the girl and bust the villains. The only “witness” is the dog, Hooch, with a taste for human necks and a penchant for tearing up anything in his path. The teamup between our titular characters is only really funny in one scene – these shown in the trailer: Jump cuts of Turner talking to Hooch during a long boring stakeout. Hilarious stuff as Hanks, displaying his usual spontaneous charm, comments on his canine partner’s slobber. The rest of the film – having to do with Hooch turning his new master’s apartment to shreds; Turner’s bland love story with a veterinarian; and a predictable secret villain behind all the dirty deeds – gets dog tired: resulting in a rushed ending with one merit… it ends in a quick ninety minutes. THE RESULT: K9 KO’s T&H. TRIVIA: Ironically both movies came out in 1989, both had villains known primarily for TV shows, and both scored a 5.7 on imdb. Much like his latter film, FORREST GUMP, he’s a character who’s every move is mistaken for genius, but for a very different, and far more involving, reason...

One side of the CIA set him up as a target for the other, and going about his everyday life, Tom’s breezy symphony violinist character is mistaken for a double-agent and he’s never, till the very end, aware of the situation. The comedy doesn't rely on one-liners but accidental situations; like Popeye sleepwalking on construction girders and never falling, he’s teflon to impending doom. The only drawback is the ever-moving action gets tiresome, but not enough to mar the quick-paced fun backed by Dabney Coleman, Carrie Fisher in a sexy and flipped-out role serving as the polar opposite of dream girl love interest Lori Singer, and James Belushi as Tom's crazy best buddy.

And here’s the champion of that particular breed, Thomas Horn as Oskar Schell, a brainy, adventurous "inventor" who loses his creative-muse father, played by Tom Hanks, on the infamous September 11th 2001 aka 911. Much of the film is a human scavenger hunt: after finding a key in dad’s closet, Oskar roams (a bit too freely) through New York City to find the person with the last name BLACK, the name written on the key's envelope, to find out what it opens. Going back and forth from the present, a year later, to the dreaded 911 morning serves not only a platform for the kid's emotions, but provides Tom Hanks with a moving performance: and it’s all a voice on an answering machine, trying desperately to reach his son while stranded in one of the ill-fated twin towers. Max Von Sydow plays a mysterious old man who doesn’t speak, aiding Oskar in his seemingly hopeless quest that gets less interesting as the film wares on. Thomas Horn, while being a very talented young actor, seems a bit too theater-trained; and his whining screech gets tiresome. Sandra Bullock provides filler as the put-upon mother with a secret all her own. And the conclusion, intentionally anticlimactic but ultimately making the characters feel good, might not serve the audience who suffered through, and hoped for, a resolution far more... complete. With creative direction and a uniquely suspenseful quest, it’s a decent movie for a first viewing, but probably not something you’ll want (or need) to watch a second time.

There's some comedy here, not all of it funny, but hardly any romance. This quirky little film, directed by Hanks and penned by Hanks and Nina Vardalos, centers on a slightly past middle-aged guy named Larry Crowne who, after being fired from his managerial job at "U-MART" because of a lack of education, ventures to community college where he takes a course you probably won't find anywhere else but fictionland. Julia Roberts is the surly instructor of a speech class helping students... learn confidence, or something. The inevitable bonding between pretty teacher and sweet-natured student is not only sidetracked by goofy subplots... Larry joining a moped-riding "gang" and various conversations with his neighbor, who runs a daily garage sale... but is where most of our time's spent. So when that Hanks/Roberts click does occur, it's forced and without much chemistry. So anyone looking for a wind-swept love story or a hilarious comedy, skip this. Yet as feel-good movies go, it passes the time in a breezy, and somewhat unique, manner. But the problem is that Hanks tries giving every character too much endearing dynamic, not only taking away from the story, but giving the impression there isn't one to begin with.
