<u>SUPERMAN RETURNS</u>: You've got to give credit to X-MEN director Bryan Singer for, in 2006, trying to make his SUPERMAN RETURNS literally that: returning from the
1978 original with the same opening credit look and starting after
 the events of SUPERMAN II with Brandon Routh as,
literally, the Christopher Reeve Superman...<br />
<br />
But if there's any one thing Reeve did best in the title role, it was playing
Clark Kent in an endearing underdog manner: something Routh just can't pull
off. Instead of being clumsy for the part he seems awkward in the role, and
while on paper Kevin Spacey's the dream Lex Luther, he seems like he
doesn't want to be there, and with the same exact world-damning
land-deal goal as Gene Hackman's Luthor, it makes the arch villain feel
even more bland, unoriginal, overly familiar and basically a frustrating
afterthought...<br />

But worse yet is Lois
Lane... Played by a much too young Kate Bosworth, her character lacks Margot Kidder's edge and experienced charm,
intrepid screen presence and, in having been in her thirties, and while looking
older than Reeve, Kidder's Lane really did seem like what she played: a solid
reporter who's been in the game and knows more in the arena of reporting
and taking risks...<br />
<br />
The latter giving Kent-turned-Superman a reason to
protect her, constantly, as the audience wants her around too: But the biggest shame here is James Marsden's throwaway role as Lois's
seemingly too-perfect boyfriend, trying too hard to be "dad" to a
horrible child actor who's really Kent's Superboy. And come to think of
it, Marsden, under Singer's direction as Cyclops in X-MEN, would have
made a much better Superman: Being the right age he seemed more in tune
with the natural fit Reeve had in the part, and he's great looking, has a
 properly muscular build, and to play the clumsy Kent, he's a good
actor... How could Singer not know what/who was staring him in the face?<br />

The entire set-up is preposterous: Like MACBETH had three foreseeing witches
igniting the plot, here there's a trio of half-naked bald "precogs" (one is Samantha Morton) in a large tub of liquid within the bowels of a formidable police station,
projecting images of murders that haven't yet happened...<br />
<br />
And Tom Cruise
arrests these poor semi-guiltys and is, soon enough, like the Film Noir/Wrong
Man movies that inspired Steven Spielberg to try replicating (pun
intended) the Neo Noir magic of BLADE RUNNER, is framed for
almost-murder and chased down like the criminals he used to... chase
down: But the over abundance of now dated-looking CGI, and the fact no
characters have any chemistry with each other or the altered-reality
world in which they reluctantly and awkwardly exist, makes MINORITY
REPORT a tedious, tiresome waste of noisy bedlam.

Especially before it gets really moving and downright tear-jerking, particularly with the girl-in-red and other exploitation (in a necessary fashion) sequences, SCHINDLER'S LIST is a brilliantly directed film by Steven Spielberg like Francis Ford Coppola's first two GODFATHER movies...<br>
<br>
In an opposite manner, the theory of an important subject matter more meaningful than the story... or making the story better for its meaningful purpose... doesn't apply to Spielberg's holocaust classic that, while epic in scope, centers tightly on specific characters, from Liam Neeson's titular Oskar Schindler to Ralph Fienne's worse-than-your-average-evil-Nazi Nazi, Goath (his deserved Best Supporting Actor robbed by Tommy Lee Jones's mainstream FUGITIVE role), which is one of the greatest performances of all time, seemingly inspired by Orson Welles's Harry Lime in THE THIRD MAN: both monsters humanly suffering the effects of an annoying cold when first (physically <i>and</i> audibly) introduced... And the nightmarish scene where a shirtless Goath takes idyllic sniper potshots at random Jews working around the camp, while managing to smoke a morning cigarette without use of his hands, is like watching Satan imitating Keith Richards, contentedly basking in his own perdition between encores and never ridding of his smoke...<br>

Meanwhile, any writeup of LIST can name names of actors since the whole cast fits perfectly within Spielberg's detailed, intimate framework: But Ben Kingsley's meek and mellow "sidekick" to Schindler's alpha male, womanizing, selfish Nazi entrepreneur turned lifesaving hero could only be so effectively peripheral by an actor who can (also) carry a picture with equal strength, and their side-side-characters are just as important...<br>

Of the inmates, around six are centered on, from married couples, young and old, to children, girls and boys, all creating a desperate though somehow hopeful atmosphere within a closely huddled, unbreakable, inseparable and even unimaginable bond (there's even some humor, from everyone including the villain) through the horrendous and palpable, true life tragedy that scriptwriter Steven Zaillian should receive equal significance along with Spielberg (who has failed without proper scripts). Thankfully the finished product, except maybe around fifteen minutes that could've used some trimming during the "I'll miss you most of all Scarecrow" epilogue (the hand-in-hand walking shot straight out of the Clark Gable disaster epic SAN FRANCISCO), makes SCHINDLER'S LIST a great Movie and not just a great Important History Lesson.<br>

Harrison Ford brings "Indy" to life with humor as well as bravado. Karen Allen, as his female counterpart, is as tough as any man but delicate and vulnerable as well. The plot is simple: find the lost Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis, aided by French archaeologist Belloq (played with subtle villainy by Paul Freeman) or the sinister yet smiley Peter Lorre-style gangster, Toht. Director Steven Spielberg's mesmerizing camerawork carries our heroes from one perilous situation to the next. And brief pockets of essential downtime not only build the characters, but allows the next obstacle to mean that much more.<br>

Cold War thrillers aren't always very thrilling, and mostly rely on mellow, page-turning espionage led by tons of dialogue.<br />
<br />
Thus Steven Spielberg creatively glides through the real life story of James B. Donovan...<br />
<br />
Who was a very reluctant insurance lawyer hired to take on an inconvenient, controversial, potentially dangerous yet legitimately lawful case in 1957, an era when most movies have American bigwigs, from the FBI to the CIA to all things Military, behaving worse than demonic mobsters.<br />

This particular vehicle is really a simple tale tha<i>t, </i>despite making the accused, kindhearted, soft-spoken Russian Spy seem a bit too perfect compared to his riled-up U.S. captors, Hanks fits everything together, not playing the role like a modern progressive stuck in a one-dimensional decade while somehow reflectively "knowing better," as happens in a lot of post-WWII history flicks: he really seems (and looks) like he's from that particular era, learning while moving from one semi intriguing obstacle to the next. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
If it's said that BRIDGE OF SPIES is a slow and/or boring motion picture, well, there is one scene in a fast moving car, and Spielberg gets his war-action on when a spy plane is shot down with a last-minute parachute...<br />
<br />
And that pilot (plus an added young man, not very fleshed-out but representing "the future" educational system) is a possible trade-off for Hanks' Russian client, originally sentenced in what plays out like a dressed-up Kangaroo court, becoming a sort of older, wise mentor while sharing a Ben Kingsley/Liam Neeson SCHINDLER'S LIST style chemistry with Hanks: needing few spoken words to genuinely bond, and, eventually, when our hero goes from America to the divided Germany,  there's never a feeling of serious, impending danger. But his determined discomfort is palpable enough to drive the story of an otherwise common man hired for the last thing he wanted to be part of, and, thinking on his toes, makes for an interesting "character" in a nicely flowing Cold War flick that's perfectly lukewarm... feeling like it intentionally settles for pretty good instead of Oscar-bait greatness, and in that, succeeds.

A far better, much more fitting tribute to the late Martin Milner would be a write-up of a particular episode of ADAM-12 or ROUTE 66, or a review of the movie COMPULSION or... so many things, but let's take a quick glance at an episode of Cult Film Freak's favorite television series of all time, COLUMBO, and an episode directed by a young man by the name of Steven Spielberg, creatively opening the curtain using a gliding camera panning back from a car on the road into an office building with the sound of a typewriter; the old classic keys being pounded by Milner himself, playing the talented half of a team of successful mystery authors: the other, one of the greatest returning villains on the show, Jack Cassidy...<br />

The taut chemistry between Milner and Cassidy is taut, awkward and palpable, deliciously adding to the suspense of a very clever "perfect crime" that... as would catapult an iconic show lasting seven years in the Seventies and then continuing from 1989 until 2003... is eventually figured-out by Peter Falk's title character, constantly acting dumb as a box of nails while the villain's conceited hammer winds up sealing his own fate...<br />
<br />
So as a series, BOOK is required viewing since it follows two mediocre pilots (before Falk became completely disheveled) and is in fact the first great COLUMBO venture and is, technically, the first episode when the show became a series (although back then, each was considered a "mystery movie")... For fans of Spielberg, you can see the master's touch was apparent years before JAWS... Cassidy can be enjoyed committing two more COLUMBO crimes (until his untimely real life death)... And here's to the late Martin Milner, who could headline or guest star and always leave a lasting impression.

Although executive produced and not technically directed by Steven Spielberg, who was busy with E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, few projects have perfectly encompassed the successful and groundbreaking filmmakers' style and overall rhythm, while fulfilling his college dream of creating a genuine horror flick, as the iconic POLTERGEIST: beginning with a spooky introduction wherein a television actually… get ready for a shock, millennials… ceases programming late at night following the Star Spangled Banner – the screen becomes "snow" and a little blond girl, Carol Anne, played by the late Heather O’Rourke, is summoned from her bed, puts her hands to the static and utters the famous line…<br />

Well you know that line, and many know the film already…<br />
<br />
A taut combination of at least two horror sub-genres, Haunted House and Paranormal Research, POLTERGEIST exists within the suspenseful collision of either, introducing the family at a newly developed semi rural suburbia, a pivotal character in itself…<br />
<br />
Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams are cool parents of three kids, and only two really matter. Sadly, in real life, a few years before O'Rourke's death, teenage daughter Dominique Dunne, playing the temperamental and eventually absent teenage daughter, was killed by her boyfriend – catapulting the “Poltergeist curse" that unfortunately adds to the overall pop culture spell of the original vehicle and eventual franchise. <br />

Behind the lens, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE auteur Tobe Hooper channels Spielberg’s lavish vision, beginning with random odd occurrences that are, by the ex-hippie parentals, mistaken as simply good vibrations at first… that is until Carol Anne vanishes into the television set, and then into the clutches of the house itself, which, by the time professional researchers arrive, has gone completely bonkers… <br />

Expository scenes where Beatrice Straight and her two assistants perform a sort of ghostly stakeout within the central living room, as Carol’s voice echoes through the shadowy walls, are both entertaining and educational – also showing how the family has become like seasoned war vets, hardly scared or even skittish after everything that's happened previously: arguably making up the best scenes, free from what would become a bit too much frantic screeching, exist within the mysterious and even humorous 45-minute initial buildup, which includes smoking grass, remote controls, sudden furniture stacking, and a dead parakeet... <br />

And there's an underrated horror starlet in JoBeth Williams’ Diane Freeling, keeping a strong connection with her daughter even as scene-stealing, ghost channeling Zelda Rubinstein, as Tangina, a sort of mystic Columbo and the film’s most memorable cult figure, arrives: butting heads with Nelson’s stalwart father/husband Steve while trying to coax Carol Anne towards, and away from, "the Light"...<br />
<br />
But it’s Oliver Robins as young son Robbie Freeling, attacked by his infamous clown doll not long after a nightmarish tree grabs him into a menacing thunderstorm, who goes through the most hellish torture – that’s if you don’t count the guy who pulls his face off under heavy bathroom lights, supplying Tobe Hooper fans a taste of 70’s exploitation smoothly combined with Spielberg’s stylistic vision that earns genuine chills while avoiding cheap thrills, and eventually focuses on not only the house but where it was built, giving the tagline and famous dialogue “They’re here” a deeper meaning since, basically, "they" never left: it's the family that moved in. <br />

The most intriguing aspect of A.I ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is discovering where Stanley Kubrick ends and Steven Spielberg begins: A project that Kubrick was preparing since the early eighties, and then realized could be technologically realized after seeing his friend Steven's JURASSIC PARK, and so, with a completed script and storyboards, Spielberg took over when the legendary director died after completing his maligned opus, EYES WIDE SHUT…<br />
<br />
As is common, ARTIFICIAL consists of three acts, only these seem like separate movies altogether: Opening with William Hurt’s Professor Hobby lecturing a group of technical designers on a new form of Artificial life: a child that will look, breath and feel very human. The character, immersed in exposition, is both speaking to them and us... After which we cut to a high class couple whose son (an only child) is in a coma and probably won’t recover: Enter SIX SENSE phenom Haley Joel Osment as David, literally created to love his new family, especially Monica (Francis O’Conner). Here’s where the movie, with futuristic settings and ominously slow paced dialogue, feels as much like a Kubrick film as possible i.e. Spielberg paying homage to his mentor: from the white pod-like vehicles to the slow-paced yet intriguing conversations... The only difference is the John William’s soundtrack pulling heartstrings as David's finally loved by his reluctant new mom. But after her human son recovers from the coma, David becomes a mere plaything, and not entirely wanted. Thus the second act becomes more of signature Spielberg film as our young hero, after accidentally endangering his sibling, is set free to live on his own with a talking Teddy Bear "super toy."<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Boy and his bear</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The action flows with Spielberg’s signature gliding cameras and bombastic soundtrack, but the character of David, joined by a male prostitute robot Gigolo Joe – played by Jude Law, attempting the kind of roguish energy of a young Kubrick-directed Malcolm McDowell combined with a devilish dash of David Niven – becomes second string to a robot destruction circus/derby, resembling a white trash Monster Truck show set in a MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDERDOME style future. <br />
<br />
A.I. attempts returning to the Kubrick roots after David finds his origin in Manhattan, where ice caps had melted the city into a watery ruin. Reminiscent of Keir Dullea’s arrival in the “Jupiter condo” in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, the third act has David seeking a “blue fairy” since he was raised on, and mirrors the story of, Pinocchio – and eventually, thanks to those long armed, giraffe-necked aliens that Spielberg turned into cinematic messiahs since the 1970's, David gets a last wish, one the audience has to suffer a prolonged half-hour to finally reach. <br />
<br />
While there are intriguing aspects of A.I, it’s much too convoluted with pathos and melodrama to be a truly involving adventure and at the same time, the action-packed mid-section disrupts the character development from the Kubrickian setup, which is the most thought-provoking and entertaining. But let’s give credit to perhaps the best character on board: the robotic, talking Teddy Bear, who seems more alive than mechanical, providing Jiminy Cricket logic and stealing the show.

Harry Steele, a womanizing adventurer played by Charlton Heston, looks awfully familiar. With a worn brown leather jacket and a fedora hat, he’s a dead ringer for Harrison Ford’s iconic Indiana Jones...<br />
<br />
But wait…
SECRET OF THE INCAS came out thirty years before the Steven
Spielberg/George Lucas epic RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. That’s right,
Indy’s not entirely original – although this isn’t a big surprise as the
 character’s an intentional composite of serial pulp heroes that Lucas
grew up worshiping: But enough of the improved 1981 homage, let’s center on
Heston’s Steele, an American maverick abroad running a tour guide
service as a front. He’s really into fortune hunting and happens upon lovely Nicole Maurey who needs a plane to escape from Peru. Harry can help
her but he’s got a trick up his sleeve. But that’s nothing compared to
his shady counterpart Ed Morgan, an old gruff heavyset con man who’s
really an adversary – tailing Steele, he wants what his young rival’s
after: an Incan treasure that, if found and returned to its mountainous
Peruvian origin The Temple of the Sun, can renew the ancient
civilization… or something.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Poster Artwork</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There’s not much action other than one scene
 where Harry and Elena wind up stealing the plane. After landing, they
take a long hike to the temple where the storyline, promising much,
comes to nothing. Robert Young’s Stanley Moorehead is introduced: a
gentleman who wants Elana’s hand in marriage. Only she’s fallen for the
roguish Steele, who should be doing a lot more to live up to his
adventurous ways.<br />
<br />
Much of the time’s spent on an Indian woman crooning
an irritating form of tribal scat to the gods – this while Harry, in the
 11th hour, winds up in a cavern where… like the RAIDERS OF THE LOST
ARK’s Staff or Ra scene… places gems in the wall where a shaft of light
lead to the next step. Only thing is – there’s no next step... The
journey, which is anything but perilous, ends right there. <i> ALSO:</i><i> The  tribal chanting main theme is used in THE BIG LEBOWSKI after The Dude is
 drugged by Jackie Treehorn in his Malibu hideaway. And the costume
designer for RAIDERS has admitted she used Harry Steele as an aesthetic
template for Indy Jones.</i><br />
