For a couple of guys who seem like Black Sabbath or Blue Öyster Cult fans, the bad country music never stops playing, but that's THE VAN by Crown International Pictures, a wall-to-wall goofy soundtrack of one young geek's journey into loose sex and vehicular savvy, as the main song croons of a Chevy Van, which his isn't: but the yellow color stands out, and the water bed breaks after one lucky screw that may not have even happened...

As much of the film has creatively shot daydream sequences of our underdog hero Stuart Goetz, the same kid that Marcia Brady didn't date when jock Nicholas Hammond told her "Something suddenly came up" on THE BRADY BUNCH. Here he's a car washer (another CAR WASH influence) under a sporadically cast Danny DeVito, one year before playing grouchy dispatcher Louie DePalma on TAXI. Funny thing, DeVito's character sits in just as tight a space, giving orders, although he's an affable (if crooked) fellow here.
Most of the picture takes place around the suburbs and outskirts of the L.A. Valley that includes the beach where a gathering of vans are shown for the mere exploitation of those vehicles, which this drive-in flick's not only named after but is exploiting from its popularity in an era of hot rods and scantily clad summer girls, including hot blonde Connie Hoffman hooked with a token muscular bully (who drives a fitfully dark van).

But the ingenue here's an uptight girl-next-door played by Deborah White, and yet her quirky friend, FADE TO BLACK quirky friend Marcie Barkin, is even more cute and effective: the girl of our guy's best friend Harry Moses, who doesn't do much but hear about his buddy's misadventurous conquests that, unfortunately, are spoken of more than actually experienced. For what THE VAN is in droves, it also misses out on: A circular road movie where the sky could have been the limit but is, for the most part, just a another backdrop. Still though, Quentin Tarantino is a VAN addict, and it is an addictive little ride.
The strangest thing about the THE INCREDIBLE 2-HEADED TRANSPLANT... overshadowed by the following year's blaxploitation camp classic THE THING WITH TWO HEADS wherein football titan Rosey Grier and once Oscar-winning Ray Milland shared the larger guy's body... is that Bruce Dern, famous for playing crazy to the hilt, is, as a bonafide Mad Scientist, extremely subdued: Rarely has the actor been so calm, cool and collected.

Meanwhile, with sexy wife (and MUNSTERS babe) Pat Priest yearning for affection, Dern's Roger is just too busy trying to morph his bizarre experiment from animals to human. And everything connects in the middle from what occurred during a violent pre-credit prologue: a low-rent Warren Oates lookalike playing a psychopath is sentenced to the loony bin, eventually escapes and, after attacking the lovely blonde ingenue residing at a rural ranch/institute (our central location), he's shot, wounded and "secretly" captured by Dern and his scientist partner: thus the killer's head is transplanted onto a faithful, gigantic and sporadically reckless OF MICE AND MEN style village idiot/gardener's son, who, after dad's added to the body count, has no reason to live a normal life, so why not place a second noggin to consummate the perpetually labored, groundbreaking experiment?

Signed by Pat Priest

Here's where the film really takes off as the human creature, literally headed by the killer controlling the bodily strength of this once gentle giant, battles Nazi bikers (the toughest played by personal friend, cult actor Gary Kent) while seeking out the kind of raging, raping and recklessly pillaging havoc that makes all things exploitation, exploitation.

And, as noted earlier, while hardly as memorable or iconic as THE THING WITH TWO HEADS (which had a corny yet genuine racial/social message), TRANSPLANT wields the kind of pointlessly awesome drive-in flavor where anything can happen; and most of it does. Added to that, our eventual savior/hero is none other than Casey Kasem as a normal (as opposed to neurotic) doctor, also providing radio voice-overs as the characters, along with the audience, are given necessary exposition between bloody bouts: Making Kasem another "two-headed" entity, only not as incredible.
This is a funny, and completely entertaining, experience you can literally call a drive-in flick. Starring the gorgeous Emily Longstreth, neatly balancing good girl, annoyed girlfriend and damsel in distress as a gang of thugs (led by scene-stealing Joel Bennett), who followed her and a wimpy boyfriend into the theater, attempt to get her alone: but she's tough as nails. Other characters include a would-be mayor, his horny daughter and curious son, two old ladies and a car-load of sexed-up vixens, to name just a few. The non-stop interplay between all the participants, leading to a pandemonium-style climax, flows terrifically in this underrated cult film that deserves a bigger following.
