And RAGNAROK, featuring the godfather of glib Jeff Goldblum embarrassingly overdosing on his own style, breaks the line once too often: Superheroes all have powers and/or skills that can, whether built-in or created, turn on and off. But the constantly witty one-liner styling of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark (ala "Starkasm") has infected Chris Hemsworth's THOR to the point that the third solo film, while enjoyable enough, nearly drowns itself in self-deprecating parody. The prologue, where Thor makes fun of his own supposedly perilous situation while facing a gigantic fire demon, sums up everything. He's not scared at all, so why should the audience take anything he's up against seriously?
But two of the humans on board not only get much better, they save INDEPENDENCE DAY from being one of the most annoying and cringe-worthy theatrical experiences of all time: And what an unlikely pair we have in Will Smith's Captain Steven Hiller and Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson, both taking part in a genuinely suspenseful third act mission to destroy the aliens in a manner reminiscent of H.G. Well's WAR OF THE WORLDS: by going underneath their vulnerabilities while jet fighters take out the mothership like the original STAR WARS dogfight finale.
King-laden album soundtrack (pictured to the right and below), was: "You know, this was my first financial failure," and then he offered a cookie. "Wanna cookie?" he asked, holding one up with a sly Felix the Cat grin. And while hanging with classic veteran actor Clu Gulager in a parking lot of the same venue, the Burbank Marriott Hotel, but on a different date, he stated that John Landis probably needed a lot of established people on board (this movie) since it was, basically, after the Vic Morrow tragedy, his way of sneaking back into Hollywood by, in this reviewer's opinion, going in the back door... using a slow, atmospheric story with a handful of cameos that only rabid movie fans (and not even them) would recognize, and that's not including superstar musician David Bowie as a hit man and even Landis himself as one of four bumbling yet lethal Iranian killers trying to find the McGuiffin: diamonds stolen from the Shah of Iran that Michelle Pfeiffer's Diane has, and, once she meets poor Ed, inside the LAX parking structure, about to possibly catch a flight to Las Vegas for something workmate Dan Aykroyd advised, he gets catapulted... that's right... Geeks John Friedrich and Paul Jabara desire their own perfect women, and you can rest assure these two humble cliques will eventually connect...

Mews Small is a punked-out free spirit while blue-eyed beauty Andrea Howard plays a curious suburban wife forcing her uptight husband to peek into wonderland, where she’s seduced by Goldblum who hired DJ Ray Vitte in a centralized glass booth overlooking the dance floor while starlet underdog (and recently departed) Donna Summer tries to get her record played.

Lightweight suspense is provided as ANIMAL HOUSE crooner DeWayne Jessie travels across town to pick up instruments for The Commodores, who may or may not show up. Meanwhile, one girl... Valerie Landsburg as Frannie, the buried lead... really wants (and deserves) to win the dance contest finale, and everyone’s having a good old time despite random obstacles, from bullies to bitches to broken dreams, that keeps this an ever-enjoyable romp of a bygone era.

Problem is, as a team-up, the duo needs a third party. In this case, the gap entails a bevy of character-actors trying to out-funny each other and our reluctant heroes: two reporters investigating a monster-sighting in Transylvania... Goldblum doesn't believe it, Begley wants it to be true. And all the goofy locals, including Michael Richards, Carol Kane, Jeffery Jones, and sexy vampire Geena Davis, come and go like characters in a high school play, deleting any camaraderie the two leads might have had otherwise. Critic Leonard Maltin gave a short review of this: "It stunk." An understatement.
