SWIMMING THROUGH SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE

First off, before belatedly delving into SHARKNADO: THE SECOND ONE, let's give some nostalgic credit to actor Ian Ziering. His Steve Sanders from the iconic TV series BEVERLY HILLS 90210 was a real character. As the former bad boy and most popular guy in school, Steve was, as the show began, kicked aside by Brandon Walsh and Dylan McKay, played by Jason Priestly and Luke Perry. One could only imagine West Beverly High when the tricky, dishonest Sanders reigned...

BH 90210

And now Ian's got what any former has-been television star would die for... with a cost. For the SHARKNADO films are considered really terrible. Then again, with so much corny dialogue, cheap CGI and last but not least, flying sharks living up to their own title, the mindless dreck had to be intentional, and has completely paid off (for the SyFy Channel, anyhow).

Beginning with a cross between AIRPORT and mostly AIRPLANE, with a familiar pilot in the form of Robert Hays and the famous William Shatner TWILIGHT ZONE episode NIGHTMARE AT 20,000 FEET being intentionally mirrored, Ziering's Fin Shepard, a former surf champ turned grungy bartender turned accidental hero, has his hands full once again: going from paranoid passenger to reluctant pilot ala Karen Black in AIRPORT 1975 (or Hays in AIRPLANE).
From here we venture to a baseball game where more characters, other than the returning Tara Reid, climb aboard: including a lackluster "why on Earth was he cast?" Mark McGrath from the band Sugar Ray and former REMOTE CONTROL hottie Kari Wuhr as well as KILL BILL assassin Vivica A. Fox; the latter having absolutely no chemistry with Ziering's Fin, whom she supposedly shared a past flame.
Meanwhile, in the John Heard old-timer role is Judd Hirsch playing a TAXI cab driver. The in-transit scenes are what made up most of the somewhat meandering original: driving around flooded streets while sharks dog the vehicle. Thankfully there's a lot more happening this time around, at all times. SECOND plays cheesy to the hilt, going overboard for the sake of rabid fans who already know the score and want to be tickled silly and vapidly entertained: more NADO than SHARKS while the sky is completely (and literally) limitless.

In that, the masters of movie baggers, RiffTrax, were good and funny but not as perfect as their roast of the original. Perhaps the film itself is so dang loud and busy, any input would be like a garden hose spraying the middle of the ocean. Basically, in a technical sense, the boys needed to be much louder over the constant pandemonium Which doesn't really matter. The movie itself has enough camp value to basically make fun of itself. Maybe that was the intention all along... to make this sequel sublimely self-contained.

CAMP VALUE: ***1/2
TRIVIA: Mark McGrath's name in the movie is Martin Brody, which was Roy Scheider name in the CITIZEN KANE of shark movies, JAWS.

In case you’re wondering, Sean Penn isn’t playing Robert Smith from THE CURE, but he sure as heck looks like him – an obviously intentional nod. With long black hair, flour white makeup and the countenance of a shocked deer in drag, Penn’s gothic, melancholy Cheyenne is a has-been alternative rock star who, living in Dublin with his wife… more like a mother, older sister and nurse rolled into one… is taking it very easy in his sluggish semi retirement.

Penn's voice takes a little getting used to: Sounding like a cross between a medicated Michael J. Pollard and comedian Emo Philips (or simply imagine a brain damaged man child) while resembling a black sheep version of Dustin Hoffman in TOOTSIE, he doesn't seem like a real person. But maybe this was intentional to separate him from the other residents including Cheyenne’s pretty Goth girl/friend, whom he’s trying to set up with a naïve, not very hip young man.

These first-act characters are interesting, and the Dublin scenes have the mellow, involving pace of a foreign film – but soon we’re transferred to America where THIS MUST BE THE PLACE becomes an ABOUT SCHMIDT (or in this case, ABOUT SMITH) style road movie where Cheyenne, recieving documents from his recently departed father... who was in a concentration camp in Germany during World War 2... embarks on a quest (that dad never completed) to find a Nazi living somewhere in the Midwest.

Cheyenne's tranformation from a tongue-tied, jaded rock star – at odds with his own shadow – into a makeshift detective figuring out where the Nazi is located, brings Penn’s performance up a few notches. He also begins playing with people’s minds, subliminally in a Columbo fashion, adding a quirky sense of subtle, earthy humor to his prior mannequin countenance.

Unfortunately, scenes with the Nazi’s oblivious daughter and her overweight son slows down the pace: we end up forgetting about that search, which is ultimately anticlimactic during the third act when Cheyenne teams with an experienced Nazi Hunter played comfortably by Judd Hirsch.

A very pleasurable movie with creative direction and a few nice songs by the likes of Iggy Pop and of course David Byrne, whose breezy TALKING HEADS tune (also used predominantly in Oliver Stone’s WALL STREET) is what this underrated dark horse indie's named after.

Writer/director Frank Pierson attempts a time period drama ala Francis Ford Coppola in the GODFATHER-inspired KING OF THE GYPSIES, centering on those infamously resilient scarf-waring vagabonds. The first act introduces the self titled leader of con-artist nomads played by Sterling Hayden, whose energetic performance makes up for the fact we get little backstory to how his character, Zharko Stepanowicz, rose to prominence in the first place.

We begin in the past: an abduction of a rival's daughter during a gypsy family party. Zharko wanted this girl for his spoiled son, Groffo, who will later grow up to be a slightly miscast Judd Hirsch, over-reaching the antagonist role with stage play gusto. He's married to a perfectly cast Susan Sarandon as Rose, the true working class hero of the Gypsy family...

Reading fortunes and using her young son to steal diamonds, Rose is the breadwinner of the mobile clan. Unfortunately, her only paychecks are the random beatings from her abusive, no-good husband.

Matthew Labyorteaux as a young Dave driving Judd Hirsch's Groffo

Throughout the narration by Eric Roberts playing Dave, the King’s grandson and Rose’s firstborn, are involving scenes with the young Dave (Matthew Labyorteaux) wreaking havoc around town, turning into dad's getaway driver and eventually becoming a thieving street urchin on his own. When he grows into Eric Roberts he’s completely separate from the Gypsy life: an estranged prodigal grandson until Zharko takes him back into the fold.

Eric Roberts, in his first theatrical role, is both intense and vulnerable as an aimless young man who is eventually, on his grandfather’s deathbed, given the “King” moniker, thus becoming a target from his jealous dad. Groffo eventually plans to sell his daughter/Dave’s sister (Brooke Shields) to another family, and for mother Rose, this is the last straw. She talks Dave into setting things right and the real excitement begins.

Never quite sure if it’s a time period melodrama or a violent exploitation style thriller, GYPSIES is always intriguing, especially as Dave, bearing the weight of his new title, has to fight his way out of a cursed life: surviving intense chases on foot or in speeding cars.
