Meanwhile the Doubting Thomas reporter and most earthy character, Harry Booth, wielding caustic humor (speaking for the audience) throughout, had, years earlier, conducted Reinhardt’s last interview before he took off from Earth and never returned: In this scene-stealing role, veteran actor Ernest Borgnine's Booth doesn't hold back while the gallant Forster and his more faithful compatriots, including love interest Yvette Mimieux as Dr. Kate McCrea (one of the loveliest ingenues hampered with a horrible hairdo) and token youth Joseph Bottoms as the spunky and endearing Lt. Although John Barry’s swirling opening track INTO THE HOLE is poignant and spooky, the victorious MAIN THEME, playing during the and eventually the last act as our surviving heroes run throughout the ship's haul, being torn apart by flaming meteors, is simply begging for the story to end: Leading to a 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY style ambiguous finale that happens too soon, not allowing Maximilian Schell enough time as the underlined, subliminal menace wherein his best moments occur during the build-up… But that big evil robot Max, eventually butting metal heads with V.I.N.C.E.N.T, a floating, telepathic and endearing sidekick ala R2D2, winds up stealing a movie (who is voiced by Roddy McDowell along with a beat-up robot of the same make, B.O.B. by Slim Pickens) that causes science fiction fanatics to smile and wince simultaneously.

Spanish Novelization

ALAN DEAN FOSTER: Bad film, but that's no news bulletin. Meanwhile President Asher, played by Aaron Eckhart, has an important meeting about North Korea and his young son misses mom, and even more so, Gerard Butler’s Manning, who was sort of a big brother and/or cool uncle through the years.

The word Olympus refers to the White House, and with a blasting of jet planes soaring through the blue skies of Washington D.C., followed by nefarious terrorist ground troops moving in, the White House is penetrated while the Prez himself, along with his Veep and a few others, go down to a secret safe room – which doesn’t remain secret or safe for long.

This initial all-out attack/invasion, the second action sequence following the first lady’s demise, is both exciting and involving, without the use of too many shaky cameras. The important thing, though, is that Banning (Butler) manages to get inside the now dilapidated White House interior. All the while, a villainous Korean “mastermind” named Kang has the President hostage, blowing away most of his important underlings to prove he means business.

All the bombastic acrobatics aside, with violence bordering on a gratuitous level and sporadic cuts to a round table emergency session (which includes Morgan Freeman's Secretary of State), the good stuff has Butler making edgy ground throughout the White House, taking out the bad guys and attempting to rescue the President’s son.

Heck, even a sweaty one-on-one fistfight against the main villain trumps the last minute attempt to avert an all-out nuclear war, proving that a good old fashion muscular hero is worth his weight in action genre gold, or in this case, solid bronze.

Of course he’s not: being the heir of an abundance of land in Hawaii dating back to the early settlers. But he’s a simple, honest man with a lot going on: including an upcoming sale that would make good for himself and his unlucky cousins...

But this is just the core of a film that's not so complicated as King’s wife, in a coma after a boating accident, has left him with the sole responsibility of two daughters, both hard pressed to shun their busy and neglectful dad. George Clooney's acting, wearing the put-upon haggardness of a man who, despite having everything, feels his life has little value, is great – not only when he tears up or shows emotion, but when he holds back... And with gray hair he's playing slightly older, and isn't about good looks...

George Clooney in The Descendants Rating: ****

Speaking of... Shailene Woodley as the rebellious oldest daughter Alexandra keeps him on his toes: especially after dropping the bombshell that her mom/his wife had cheated before the accident. So Matt, the kids, and Alexandra’s slacker boyfriend go in search of a mysterious real estate agent i.e. the guy who cheated with mom. And here’s where the plot thickens and the audience has something to anticipate other than an inevitable death or the closing of a land deal...

Using addictive elements of melodramas and soap operas while keeping an underlying dry wit throughout, it's a story that aims for sheer realism with terrific results, and best yet, gorgeous shots of Hawaii that, like the California Wine Country in director Alexander Payne's SIDEWAYS and middle America in ABOUT SCHMIDT, is a character in itself. And veteran actors Robert Forster, as King’s curmudgeon step-dad, and Beau Bridges as a seemingly friendly cousin, add to ensemble cast that’s so down to earth, you’ll forget they're in a movie.

Shailene Woodley, George Clooney, Barbara L. The gang of vicious cold-blooded blood-thirsty thugs include shit-talkin' leader Willie Colin and henchman Don Blakley. And everyman machinist father/husband Robert Forster, friends with the (secret) vigilante group, is in denial about how bad society is until his child and wife are attacked by the gang. Everything collides wonderfully in this exploitation-DEATH WISH that delivers on every level, including street fights, prison survival, and an awesome guitar-driven soundtrack. Too classy for grindhouse and too gritty for mainstream, this is the perfect synergy of blood, guts, guns, and best of all, sweet revenge.
