Not coming from any character in the movie but from the "author" intruded editing room: Like PULP FICTION's Uma Thurman drawing an animated box outside Jack Rabbit Slims, the viewer must simply go with it. So in this severe tale of a dying man frantically in search of who "killed him," perhaps that silly noise existed to separate the two halves – and that's the gist of this particular nightmarish odyssey. Loaded with whodunit potential since what's been done can't be set back, it's never a question since, with the exception of those convention partiers who left town before O'Brien wakes up with a lethal hangover, no one's really known to us or him other than a faithful secretary, back home, on the phone, talking to her frantic boss who, poisoned at a jazzy bar that the hotel party had moved to, he has only a few days to live, and has to find out who, and why?<br>

Being Gerald Butler’s turn, he decided to meet in the middle and play someone athletic. Although as a has-been soccer star named George, he’s more lethargic than active.<br /> <br /> George's main <i>goal</i> has always been women… and that’s what he gets when he decides to move to the town where his ex-wife and son live. He winds up being the soccer coach to help his kid's team, and all the soccer moms have the ever-loving hots for him. <br /> <br /> These include Judy Greer, who cries at the sight of the big Scottish lug. Then there’s Catherine Zeta-Jones as a sexy sportscaster… or ex sportscaster turned domesticated mother… who can help George land a gig – with a sultry price. And Uma Thurman is the promiscuous wife of Dennis Quaid, the town boob with so much money to throw around he practically drowns in it. <br /> <br /> Having tanked so hard in theaters and receiving a disastrous 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, you’d think PLAYING FOR KEEPS would be a lot worse. Sure, it’s not very funny… Gerald Butler has the comedic chops of a deer in headlights and even seems out of his element romancing (or being romanced by) the ladies.<br /> <br /> But his performance comes around when he realizes what the audience knows from the start – and what the movie’s title implies: that his son and ex wife, played with a girl next door charm by Jessica Biel, mean more than anything… including a game changing career. <br /> <br /> The best scenes have George realizing his days of wild abandonment have gone past. Not only because he has another shot at regaining his family, but the lusty hijinx with the town moms, meant to put the <i>Comedy</i> in <i>Romantic</i>, isn't very funny and, with the exception of an 11th hour dilemma, ultimately lacks purpose.   <br /> <br /> But this could be due to the film’s star, who fares better with blood oozing from a sword. In KEEPS, Butler seems like a mercenary on vacation, itching for the idyllic break to end.

Meg Ryan is Quaid’s journalist girlfriend aiding Short in the old school runaround action that, after characters are introduced (and others are shrunken to dwarves), gets way too complicated for its own good.<br /> <br /> There are relatively few scenes inside the human body. Most of the film has Short providing physical comedy as Quaid roves around within. Although they hardly share screen together, both have great chemistry. And while Dante stock actors Robert Picardo and Kevin McCarthy are nice to have on board, there are too many cooks and the running time drags on thirty minutes too long.<br /> <br /> Director Joe Dante seems at home with the science aspect – especially the ten-minute setup to the initial human shrinking, which looks real and makes everything else seem legit.<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Innerspace-Dennis-Quaid/dp/B0000648ZQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348128035&sr=8-1&keywords=innerspace"><br /></a><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1D5XNEkV2apNQUwa6zg4zUvQYVHHPs6mOtVdP_RySo05PVHiIARWxggX77xg8RKTPVjma4EcHKaNVtIDnYPMEkOVBiM0EkhTxYmy4R91PKpKeK1RrTXO0JWVUzEgvIJ1b2Ox-IiXU1RZw/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1D5XNEkV2apNQUwa6zg4zUvQYVHHPs6mOtVdP_RySo05PVHiIARWxggX77xg8RKTPVjma4EcHKaNVtIDnYPMEkOVBiM0EkhTxYmy4R91PKpKeK1RrTXO0JWVUzEgvIJ1b2Ox-IiXU1RZw/s640/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Meg Ryan with Joe Dante favorite Dick Miller</td></tr> </tbody></table> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGwpZRzimJvtDG7__ukTWG-2x71_cXaPgGfD3wGhHzkCbFxjQbXpdYmNplLxyYJvFx8AFiUhQ2Igd78BDxa47rf3PELaubsPSwuBzwS95Bl16CHFleW1eqg1HGozfZieRTV45eCs7_S1Om/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="368" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGwpZRzimJvtDG7__ukTWG-2x71_cXaPgGfD3wGhHzkCbFxjQbXpdYmNplLxyYJvFx8AFiUhQ2Igd78BDxa47rf3PELaubsPSwuBzwS95Bl16CHFleW1eqg1HGozfZieRTV45eCs7_S1Om/s640/4.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The film's other blonde beauty, Wendy Schaal</td></tr> </tbody></table> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf4ft4foBurN-NOdJtd7QSHnwod3mGBz7quUNOUXGy6MWcDg22Oa2Fi93gSIscnTzSGXXl86V7sl8_g0YZPaswrxGPuO98lZzx4RsS-Y0y1NyujnwJ-hLLjcCIUWrYk4pOwVEKUsv3LxzX/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf4ft4foBurN-NOdJtd7QSHnwod3mGBz7quUNOUXGy6MWcDg22Oa2Fi93gSIscnTzSGXXl86V7sl8_g0YZPaswrxGPuO98lZzx4RsS-Y0y1NyujnwJ-hLLjcCIUWrYk4pOwVEKUsv3LxzX/s640/5.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Martin Short, Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Innerspace-Dennis-Quaid/dp/B0000648ZQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1348128035&sr=8-1&keywords=innerspace">BUY DVD</a></td></tr> </tbody></table>

Yet this isn’t such a painful ride given the delivery (pun intended) of one-liners by Chris Rock and a group of Mr. Mom’s providing advice for a naive soon-to-be dad. But these scenes are mere distractions to an ensemble covering just about everything having to do with couples expecting, save for the conception itself – leave that to Judd Apatow.<br /> <br /> What makes this work are the eclectic characters ranging all ages: from the son of a famous race car driver to the boyfriend of a famous reality star… to a child photographer to a perfect blond bunny – both sexes are covered equally. There's a touch of melodrama including the fear of adoption and losing a child. And there’s a lot of corny things along the way: some of the relationships seem out of a sitcom, the jokes aren’t always good, and everyone's jobs are just too perfect.<br /> <br /> But the semi all star cast, including Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Dennis Quaid (whose “son” Ben Falcone looks nothing like him), makes for a decent time waster despite the "predictable"<span id="goog_14010327"></span><span id="goog_14010328"></span> turnout at the hospital paternity ward.<br /> <br /> That's right... babies happen.

There are a few problems with this remake: First off, we relive the origin of the dance-ban as five teens are killed in an automobile accident after leaving a nightclub. This takes away from a haunting moment in the original as that love interest, played by Lori Singer, tells the ghostly tale of her brother’s demise. We also witness the law being put into motion, taking away from the main character's shocked realization of it. But what really made the original work was the town itself, white trash kids who seemed not only unhindered by the ban: but didn’t realize what they were missing – and it took our protagonist to break them from their shell. The kids in this movie seem like AMERICAN IDOL contestants waiting in the Green Room, and have no real need for a hero like Ren McCormack, played by newcomer Kenny Warmald, a Johnny Depp lookalike who, being an actual dancer, brings real moves to the screen. But this makes him more of an athlete hindered by a crazy law than a rebellious kid breaking free from it. Chris Penn’s character Willard is played by Miles Teller with sincere hillbilly charm, although during the montage in which Ren teaches him to dance he becomes a little too good at it – making you forget he had a problem to begin with. Dennis Quaid plays the preacher with cold calculation, but with a one-note scowl throughout, he misses the mark of an everyman torn between what he feels is right and the love of his daughter Ariel, played by Julianne Hough who, seeming like she's posing for a magazine ad in every shot, is the most wasted character. While Warmald tries his best to remain perpetually annoyed by the town’s dictatorship... and has moments of genuine compassion as he reflects upon his mother's death... his performance, and the script, lacks the breezy fun of the original. And his progressive uncle and aunt provide him an out – making Ren seem not so alone in his predicament. Many scenes mirroring exact moments and dialog from its iconic predecessor keeps this from standing (and dancing) on its own two feet. And instead of the tractor chicken race, we have a five truck demolition derby more befitting to <span style="font-style: italic;">Mad Max </span>than a REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE inspired flick about dancing and rebellion.

The acting makes BAYWATCH seem like THE GODFATHER, and there’s little story arc, which is important in a beat-the-odds sports movie: especially about a young female surfer who, after losing her arm to a shark’s bite, relearns how to surf and eventually takes part in a major competition. The lead-up to the shark attack is slow, the characters introduced like a TV sitcom… only without laugh tracks or anything to really smile about. Protagonist parents Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid, both fine actors, seem to be going through the motions. And AnnaSophia Robb, as Bethany Hamilton, has but one expression throughout: even during, and right after, the attack, a pivotal scene that happens much too quickly. But the biggest sin is the lackluster montage during the training sequences as she learns to surf with one arm. There’s hardly any struggle, and before you know it she’s out on the waves like it’s nothing. Although there is a point of no return where Hamilton swears off surfing forever, leading to a “spiritual awakening” during a mission trip, sparking her interest again… These scenes have heart, as do actual footage of the real Bethany Hamilton during the end credits. And it’s nice seeing Christianity as something more than a character’s quirky psychosis, like depicted in most Hollywood films. It’s just too bad they had to rush through the important parts so quickly, leaving little residual <span style="font-style: italic;">soul</span> in the process.
