Not many actors equal Jack Nicholson, who, in a technical sense, the recently departed Bill Paxton (who died from complications of surgery on February 26th), replaced in the maligned yet entertaining TERMS OF ENDEARMENT sequel, THE EVENING STAR. And Peter O'Toole said in an interview about THE STUNT MAN, also referring to his string of other accomplishments, "Great movies make Great Actors." Jack, Peter and many others have been in far greater movies than the late Bill Paxton, whose performances would often exceed the movie itself. He shares Jack's mischievous cat-that-ate-the-canary grin, and seems to have the kind of steady confidence that, if he were a real life friend, you'd feel both amused and completely safe with. But Paxton had a likability factor that trumped many actors. His on-screen style bordered on comedy and drama while his spontaneity made him one of the most unique actors from the 1980's. But our name-dropped buddy, actress Sally Kirkland, said she had coached Bill when he first got into show business. She couldn't remember the picture, and as movie fanatics aka cult film freaks often know more than the genuine article, it was, most likely, a low-budget Roger Corman 1950's-era/1975-shot bank robbing action flick titled CRAZY MAMA, a hybrid of BONNIE AND CLYDE and Corman's BIG BAD MAMA. CRAZY is one of Paxton's first moments on screen. Later, after his fame was well established, features like TWISTER where he starred, or smaller roles like the scene-stealing or rather movie-making turn as bullying older brother Chet in John Hughes's WEIRD SCIENCE, he always left an impression. And while the big time stardom waned a bit after playing a sort of Jacques Cousteau/Geraldo Rivera hybrid in his TERMINATOR, ALIENS and TRUE LIES director James Cameron's epic blockbuster TITANIC (and Cameron's then-girlfriend's rural Vampire yarn NEAR DARK), his last big starring push was on cable television, and that's where, nowadays, the good stuff is. And it takes a great actor to succeed in both venues. And he was that. Great and completely original.

“It’s really hard to define yourself in this big movie competing with special effects,” actor Scott Thomson, who plays one of several storm chasers, said in a Cult Film Freak interview. “The star of the show is the TWISTER.”

And we can’t forget the flying cow that really made a lasting, iconic impression although there are many other great visuals: including an assortment of tornadoes that practically become living/breathing movie monsters...

The aesthetics aside, TWISTER is a character-driven film, literally. And while there are an assortment of storm riders aboard the dilapidated mobile caravan, the two leads are Bill Paxton’s Bill Harding and his soon-to-be-ex wife Jo, played by Helen Hunt.

The story begins with Bill seeking one last signature to finalize the divorce. Here we meet the intrepid team, highlighted by Philip Seymour Hoffman as Dusty, an energetic, classic rock blaring hippie slob, randomly goading the uptight Jami Getz as Bill's naïve, tagalong fiancé who is actually quite important: during most of the film, it's through her shocked eyes we experience what the others are completely used to....

Especially Helen Hunt’s Jo, who, during the intense childhood prelude, loses her dad to a farmland tornado… Her story goes slightly beyond Bill’s determination to prove his contraption/invention Dorothy can, when whisked up into the sky, learn specific information so that, in the future, people will have more than a two-minute storm warning. In this story Jo has her own revenge angle... Tornado chasing is not only science, it's deeply personal! Then again Bill's idea had been ripped off by his corporate scheming rival (Cary Elwes), adding motivation and dimension to his character.

A defining attribute of TWISTER is it's constantly on the go... At the same time, an impending sense of doom lurks throughout… Like when the people are on land in JAWS, we never forget where the real danger exists and what's always waiting for us. Thus this roving, suspenseful yarn – even during brief pockets of downtime – relies on the quirky crew stalking a formidable menace that normal folks hide from... And the audience rides shotgun the entire trip.

Thankfully, executive producer Steve Spielberg wasn’t finished with author Michael Crichton after his sublime, successful adaptation of JURASSIC PARK… With TWISTER, SPEED driver Jan de Bont directed something special that, although maligned as corny and far fetched despite a huge box office draw, still holds up today: like an actual storm, the adventure begins with a breezy introduction, slowly escalates into a wind-swept cadence and eventually blasts off into several thrilling crescendos.

Sure, it's a bit much when the tornado becomes a determined, lone antagonist, chasing our two main characters like the end of a cliché horror flick, and the dialogue gets silly and downright contrived, but that's all part of the escapist fun that should keep you completely entertained from start to finish... if you let it!
When I read the script, I thought, if I ever played Dusty, that’s the part to have because there’s something there to play… Philip Seymour Hoffman came in and did a bang-up job... We were kind of envying him because he had all the… You know, he had a lot of fun.

Your character is nicknamed The Preacher... What's the reason for that?

It was never really defined, to my frustration… I tried talking to the director, Jan de Bont, a nice guy from Holland… His background is a cinematographer, basically, and he’d come out with SPEED and everyone had embraced him because that was an amazing action film, so he was recruited for TWISTER…

But he wasn’t really interested in getting into the minutia of our characters. I tried to get some time with him... I’d say: “I’m called The Preacher… So this is my take… I feel like I’m a preacher’s son who went over to the dark side of science and yet still had my roots in my Baptist Evangelist background.” But there was no time to explore that… And I tried, but, what are you gonna do?

I usually just tell people I was the guy in the cow suit.
And here's a bonus archived review, more of a write-up, actually, of a movie with the same title that probably has its own faithful following...

Let's just say that often, in the cinematic sense, weird has gotten a bad time. When weird is too weird, or weird for the sake of being weird, it's a complete waste of time.

But in the 1989 independent film, TWISTER, which has little to do with a tornado and nothing to do with the Helen Hunt movie about people chasing them (that came out several years later), gives weird a good name.

Centering on a dysfunctional, eccentric family in Cleveland living in a mansion: the father played by Harry Dean Stanton who owns a soda pop factory and his two kids: Crispin Glover, who sits around strumming his guitar and acting strange (like he does so well), and the self-involved daughter, Suzy Amis, who hates her life more than her boyfriend, Dylan McDermott, whose tough guy blue collar character gives the movie a firm "normal" base.

The title is liken to CHINATOWN, having little to do with the plot but everything to do with the unpredictable, spontaneously existential concept. So for fans of weird, this little gem is highly recommended. The dialogue is creative, perfectly suited for the quirky ensemble. And for fans of normal, perhaps it's a good change.

Steamy vampire flick with terrific moments and memorable characters, including Jenny Wright as a shyly sensuous vamp who seduces farm boy Adrian Pasdar into her clutches. In NEAR DARK she bites him and, not yet transformed, he joins the family: a gang of rogue RV-riding bloodsuckers including Lance Henriksen as the brooding leader and hopped-up scene-stealer Bill Paxton as a bad boy brawler.

The vibe throughout is spooky and intense, the starkly rural daytime setting giving a Spaghetti Western feel while the shadowy night shots channel Film Noir. But the camarawork, although making good use of light and shade, keeps too close on the actors, feeling more like a Gothic photo album than a suspensful motion picture.
Some of the music, seeming placed throughout to fill a soundtrack album, hinders what should have been more timeless otherwise...

But an ultra-violent scene within a red neck bar, and a finale on a desolate street straight out of a demonic HIGH NOON, makes this a uniquely bloody ride. And although not as conventionally entertaining, there's a murkier depth than its successful competitor, THE LOST BOYS.

And while Pasdar is a dependable – though somewhat wooden – lead protagonist, the best moments concern Paxton’s daredevil lunacy or Jenny Wright’s docile-doomed expressions as each inevitable dawn draws in: Perhaps NEAR LIGHT would have been a more fitting title, as these vamps are continuously playing time with loaded dice.
An old school action flick in the Sam Peckinpah tradition that puts Patrick Swayze, in a narrow-eyed ready-to-strike ROADHOUSE mode, against seedy odds as Chicago cop Truman Gates, originally from the Sticks and considered white trash to his surly comrades.

His little brother (Bill Paxton) is killed by local mafia goon Adam Baldwin, but Truman plays entirely by the rules as the mob, including a lazy kingpin’s son Ben Stiller, continue to run the town.

Enter scene-stealer Liam Neeson as Swayze’s older sibling, Briar. With the countenance of a feisty badger mixed with a cagy serpentine prowess (imagine Charles Bronson as Daniel Boone), he sets out alone to get bloody revenge against those the law can’t strike.

By far the best scenes have the heavily-armed Neeson taking out mobsters and even leaping from moving trains to survive their retaliation. It really seems like his story rather than Swayze’s... Although the late actor’s dominate arrival on each scene substantiates the theme: that to really fight evil, you have to play your cards with deliberate precision. And while his climatic shootout in a cemetery doesn't quite live up to his brother's creative tactics, NEXT OF KIN is a worthwhile, and better than average, crime/action experience.
There’s a hint of cinematic exploitation in this made for TV movie about a boarding school full of pretty rich girls stalked by a phantom killer: Enter Diane Franklin as the new girl, taking everything in with a naïve, vulnerable expression and meeting each character along with the audience...

There’s Ally Sheedy as a rich girl and a host of others, including Bart Simpson’s voice Nancy Cartwright, most getting picked off by a mysterious killer within the Southern plantation style campus. The mystery aspect works good – it’s hard to tell who the culprit might be. Perhaps Bill Paxton as a seemingly kindhearted horse-trainer or the classy French teacher. Our only hope in stopping the killings, which occur mostly off screen (if you don’t jot down each victim’s names you’ll forget who dies or lives), is Larry Wilcox as a local plainclothes investigator with a chip on his shoulder and a particular dislike for pompous school owner Donna Reed. An intriguing "body count" premise where the spoiled beauties, like in any horror flick, go through the ringer. And the “who done it” finale turns out somewhat creative.

Well it does but that's not the problem. The same thing occurred in Peter Jackson's remake of KING KONG: that if you take a creature, and make him too realistic, you lose some of the dynamic. If Mighty Joe Young, or Kong for that matter, are really just gorillas who happen to be larger than normal, it takes away the monster-driven bedlam that made both original films, each produced, directed and written by the same folks, so classic. This, as a remake, isn't that bad, and the special effects are above average: it's difficult to tell what's CGI or otherwise. Bill Paxton makes for a decent accidental hero, and Charlize Theron fills Terry Moore's shoes decently enough. But there needed more old school mindless action and less weepy backstory.
