“I kind of cross this line where... I see it whether it's really
there or not,” actress Dee Wallace wrote in a Cult Film Freak interview.
“Kind of like the monster in the closet when we're little… You just
know it's there, so it is.”

And that’s how Joe Dante’s
THE HOWLING begins, without seeing too much of anything – more of a
creepy Film Noir look than outright horror flick as Dee Wallace’s Karen
White, an intrepid anchorwoman at a local news station, has planned to
meet a mysterious man named Eddie Quist somewhere within the shadowy
downtown city streets... And what Karen witnesses, kept from the
audience, really sticks with her... Thus
the investigation trades off to snoopy reporter Terry Fisher, played by
versatile character-actress Belinda Balaski, who, as a doomed camp
counselor in Dante’s PIRANHA a few years earlier, resulted in a
memorable death scene...
He's only an actor having to dress up like one, standing outside a theater to promote a film called CAPTAIN AVENGER, a low-paying gig he really likes since, after all, pleasing crowds is Steve’s business…

The plot begins when Steve, stopping at a liquor store, thwarts a robbery – still wearing the superhero costume. This ignites the rabid media, having no clue of the masked man's identity…

Much of the film has Steve flirting with, and eventually romancing, his gorgeous neighbor, Archer’s J. Marsh, while ignoring media hype spouting from television – the news, and the incumbent mayor’s determined assistant, wants the hero revealed...
By the time Steve dons the garb and ventures downtown, the ride's almost over… It might have been interesting seeing a completely inept guy fighting crime – instead there’s a ton of whining and so much reluctance to take action, perhaps the AT LARGE should have been AT HOME…

Ritter makes for a likable romantic lead while Archer’s great to look at, as usual, but the idealistic conclusion is preachy and bulwarks the fun that should have been had along the way.

year: 1987 cast: Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, Meg Ryan, Dick Miller, Robert Picardo rating: ***

THE RIGHT STUFF stud Dennis Quaid plays another cocky test pilot – this time he’s transformed into a cell-sized explorer placed inside the body of Martin Short in this modernized FANTASTIC VOYAGE directed by Joe Dante, whose prior edgy thrillers like PIRANHA and THE HOWLING are only reminiscent in the lethal assassins that really mean business.

Quaid was supposed to go inside a test rabbit but the experiment leader is hunted and killed, and after desperately injecting everyman Short, the chase is on. Meg Ryan is Quaid’s journalist girlfriend aiding Short in the old school runaround action that, after characters are introduced (and others are shrunken to dwarves), gets way too complicated for its own good.

There are relatively few scenes inside the human body. Most of the film has Short providing physical comedy as Quaid roves around within. Although they hardly share screen together, both have great chemistry. And while Dante stock actors Robert Picardo and Kevin McCarthy are nice to have on board, there are too many cooks and the running time drags on thirty minutes too long.

Director Joe Dante seems at home with the science aspect – especially the ten-minute setup to the initial human shrinking, which looks real and makes everything else seem legit.

Al plays a loser who manages his uncle's rundown UHF station, giving ample opportunity for pop culture satire. Famous for three minute song parodies, Yank's conversion on screen lacks the punch of his day job; while his songs are funny, his acting is not. There's one music video: THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES to the tune of Dire Strait's MONEY FOR NOTHING, slightly humorous till the dated premise is realized. And the only good segment is a fictional station promo satirizing CONAN THE BARBARIAN. The rest flatlines continuously.
