"I think writers love to write for deliciously bad characters or flawed characters, and when a character is kind of the, you know, good guy, they’re not as interested."<br> <br> And the same can be said for a sometimes thankless Mark Hamill. Despite being the masthead of a trilogy that's always been regarded as "From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker," Han wound up stealing the show. The opening chapter is tops as it takes many pages for Luke's X-Wing to crash-land.  <br>

It's like looking outside a dirty window — at more dirt. And this galaxy doesn't seem all that far, far away like a fantasy-driven STAR WARS installment should. With human characters so immensely droll and mundane, every time the usual weird-looking alien pops up, it seems out of place and, for lack of a deeper, more insightful description, pretty stupid. <br> <br> But there's really only one big question for die-hard fans concerning this STAR WARS STORY. Does <i>He</i> live up to <i>Him</i>? Him meaning Harrison Ford and He meaning Alden Ehrenreich, not tall and deep-voiced but an irritating shrimp with a nasally whine, as if Leonardo DiCaprio were imitating Christian Slater channeling Jack Nicholson... <br> <br> With a filler girlfriend/crush (Emilia Clarke), and the gurgling Chewbacca at his side (after meeting in a fight scene that could've been decent given more logic in the first place), Ehrenreich doesn't even seem to be trying — for anything. His brand of cocky confidence is narrowed into a bratty grin. And while critics are praising Donald Glover's imitation of Lando Calrissian, he's got as much to do with the story as anyone on board: He's just there. And bored.<br> <br> <div style="text-align: right;"> </div> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm_Rx1x7GZKKRuKjUZa2tHVxpkSK9RFx5ywbBqj5jQ5OjMt3ZVAFhv7n__pSwFjaCjNMq4XA2hJ2OkIfpypWsIwOzVOm4EvSPrvBT7WIWECb7hXJKjTrSDFNb02c2__4F49TTOx1LFDrr2/s1600/rc_fandango_handout_13x19_v3_lg_1.jpg" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="361" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm_Rx1x7GZKKRuKjUZa2tHVxpkSK9RFx5ywbBqj5jQ5OjMt3ZVAFhv7n__pSwFjaCjNMq4XA2hJ2OkIfpypWsIwOzVOm4EvSPrvBT7WIWECb7hXJKjTrSDFNb02c2__4F49TTOx1LFDrr2/s400/rc_fandango_handout_13x19_v3_lg_1.jpg" width="143"></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><u>SoloMovieScore: *</u></td></tr> </tbody></table> With a non-existent plot involving several raids including a train robbery (why would tracks be needed in a world full of hovering vehicles?) to nab some kind of expensive gas to pay off a crime lord, the attempt for a pulpy pirate adventure is drowned-out by melodramatic pathos concerning slave labor, which happens on a pathetic, pretentious, manipulative loop. Even Lando's female robot literally screams for "equal rights"...<br> <br> And while Woody Harrelson tries his best as a semi-rogue named Beckett (the kind of clever/crooked mentor you'd think Solo would emulate to reach his maverick NEW HOPE persona), he's simply another ragged soul along for the ride. What's meant to be the most suspenseful scene is both a carbon-copy and contradiction of the Millennium Falcon asteroid-dodge in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. The characters are either sitting on board the old reliable ship or flying it. Neither matters. It's about as intense as watching someone play a video game, or playing one you've already mastered...  <br> <br> While SOLO <i>seems</i> to be about how the experienced, world-weary smuggler acquired the guts to take big risks at a young age, Alden Ehrenreich plays him so bland and lazy, any intrepid skills seem merely built-in and unexplained during capers both simplistic and overly-complicated. But nothing's worse than the random pockets of embarrassingly awkward silences: Whether it be after Ehrenreich fouls-up yet another glib one-liner, or Chewbacca waiting passively for something meaningful to react to, Ron Howard, in attempting to resurrect a broken engine, has pieced together a vapid, sterile machine that's not just a let-down in the inevitable grade-curve of the STAR WARS franchise, but is simply a lousy, cheap-looking movie. Period. <br>

While historically this is far, far more important, Lucas provides an edgier, more vibrant, hearty and spontaneous pace... <br> <br> Other problems concerning DAM BUSTERS (besides Gibson's black lab being named... The N-Word, which is spoken around twenty times) is the lack of suspense after each plane attempts glory. Despite several misses, the near-victory feels obvious, predictable. But what's really distracting are the flashes of cartoon-like ground-fire from Germans below that, sticking to our comparison, dart forward like lasers coming off The Death Star canons or Tie Fighters. Only here there aren't any German planes to dodge and blast. It's only those three damn dams, making it difficult for the audience to keep score, or know exactly <i>what</i> is going on. Only why.  <br>

Also on the nostalgic front, it was Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher who went from a GONE WITH THE WIND style Rhett and Scarlett bickering duo into an opposites-attract couple extremely deserving of a long anticipated kiss (interrupted by that perfectly annoying droid). And like Ford improved shooting the showboat swordsman with a lazy pistol a year later in Lucas and Steven Spielberg's pulp collaboration, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, neither Brackett or Kasdan came up with a response fitting the maverick, and it was Ford who, on the cuff, responded to Leia's admission of love with, "I know."<br /> <br /> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgMJVMvzq7OZTfNvLnAxxAHKR6GdgoSmdPeD3YrWwa3QO-jcx8CPjT6be72W3TPNXuTLOEBPmAlhojWn75MeqskEs995feuBZLrBN-n93lS6opdp4G6ZpPSRGfMN_iUvZD1GhodEh_R5f/s1600/carrieshampoo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="257" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvgMJVMvzq7OZTfNvLnAxxAHKR6GdgoSmdPeD3YrWwa3QO-jcx8CPjT6be72W3TPNXuTLOEBPmAlhojWn75MeqskEs995feuBZLrBN-n93lS6opdp4G6ZpPSRGfMN_iUvZD1GhodEh_R5f/s400/carrieshampoo.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><u>Carrie Fisher looking right through her prey in SHAMPOO circa 1975</u></td></tr> </tbody></table> For an American kid who grew up not only <i>on</i> STAR WARS but <i>along with</i> STAR WARS, Carrie Fisher was then and remains still the only "royalty" we ever knew. The daughter of singer/actress Debbie Reynolds and comedian Eddie Fisher, she was a darker, more willowy and mysterious, subtle beauty than her mother's baby-faced, fireworks explosion of candy apple delight. Without trying too hard, or pushing that just-sealed envelope too far, Carrie played Princess Leia as strong as any man, and this was during the 1970's when assertive women had to stand out and, more often than naught, overdo to be noticed. Nothing doing with Fisher's take on the Rebellion's one and only Princess. What she had was very natural, even going back two years previously in SHAMPOO as the spoiled, melancholy daughter of a rich dame having an affair with hairdresser Warren Beatty: it's Fisher's character who really puts the breezy womanizer in his place...<br /> <br /> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFGQO5CHyYUcH1p_DmLrxvtmT_hrLI14ag0RIRrG1aVrqroGRjxh4yZvCT-KtWuAqUQBrAjqoABpVWfBUFpGSPYqSKV29asIrciT3s-70xZEhng-VMYCm-FAYC9dFew2yEQmk7zkQsF4cZ/s1600/Hannah-and-Her-Sisters-April-10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFGQO5CHyYUcH1p_DmLrxvtmT_hrLI14ag0RIRrG1aVrqroGRjxh4yZvCT-KtWuAqUQBrAjqoABpVWfBUFpGSPYqSKV29asIrciT3s-70xZEhng-VMYCm-FAYC9dFew2yEQmk7zkQsF4cZ/s320/Hannah-and-Her-Sisters-April-10.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><u>In Woody Allen's HANNAH AND HER SISTERS</u></td></tr> </tbody></table> And a few years after wearing her now famous Jabba's Palace bikini in the, at that point, final STAR WARS installment, RETURN OF THE JEDI, Carrie Fisher, no longer a Princess but a bonafide actress (and singer), provided what was to be her last standout role — in <i>this</i> galaxy...<br /> <br /> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixmm5al0dlRHd4CbIvR5YZWuxDXlChzHLG3tkovgUA8uNNVJQJufLwh9dJxGw_-9BGf2qazqIkkVQy5mwF6lWM5zzYKxjhJmxvxgnbywt0mN9MeXSTfbhyCimBE5kOrW6eNRsJ0wTlvuNe/s1600/Screen+Shot+2016-12-27+at+12.39.01+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixmm5al0dlRHd4CbIvR5YZWuxDXlChzHLG3tkovgUA8uNNVJQJufLwh9dJxGw_-9BGf2qazqIkkVQy5mwF6lWM5zzYKxjhJmxvxgnbywt0mN9MeXSTfbhyCimBE5kOrW6eNRsJ0wTlvuNe/s320/Screen+Shot+2016-12-27+at+12.39.01+PM.png" width="162" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><u>In THE BLUES BROTHERS</u></td></tr> </tbody></table> For without her important role of a stable, well-balanced, beautiful and downright lucky New York auditioning actress, the most grounded and sympathetic of Woody Allen's HANNAH AND HER SISTERS sister, Dianne Wiest, would mean nothing if not by comparison (a review of the cult misfire UNDER THE RAINBOW is under way): Then there's one of her most action packed roles, and she really just sits around, letting a flame thrower do all the work, trying to kill John Belushi's Jake Blues of THE BLUES BROTHERS and sending he and brother Elwood... Dan Aykroyd... rocketing towards the sky in an ignited telephone booth...<br /> <br /> And now we shall end this tribute for the late Carrie Fisher with this: While there have been several worthy ingenues to carry on the franchise lately, from Daisy THE FORCE AWAKENS Ridley to Felicity ROGUE ONE Jones, let's put a twist on Yoda's famous cliffhanger-quote, standing on his murky planet with a ghostly Obi Wan Kenobi: "There will NEVER be another..." quite like Carrie Fisher.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div>

Others felt the last was the worst, especially because Darth Vader became the galaxy's Adolf Hitler when his wife died in a dream... <i>Nooooooo!</i><br> <br> So then, ROGUE ONE is obviously intended as a genuine bridge... a prequel for the originals and a sequel for the prequels... and it does a pretty good job despite the first thirty minutes either expecting us to already know the characters we're supposed to root for, or giving us very little to be involved in and/or to cheer <i>about</i>... Plus the fact, there's a strange feeling that imposters have infiltrated our beloved landscape, including the meeting room and X-Wing hangar on the forest planet Yavin... And the very, very beginning... before the gigantic STAR WARS hits the screen (without a scroll-story this time)... is one of the dullest prologues ever, lacking kickstart action and utterly failing to serve the purpose of getting us revved for what's to come. But then, after a little while, something happens...<br>

Here are some of the things that make it a pretty great ride: For one, the suspense during the climactic battle, by the Star-Killer thrusting the sun's rays to blow up planets, is maintained perfectly. As long as there's sunshine, we have a last-minute chance replacing the famous "Almost There" pilot in the original STAR WARS. And the Star-Killer surface is snow, resembling Hoth while Leia's outpost is Endor forest-green and the main beginning location Jakku is the new Tattooine. Not so original, but sure beats the hell out of those busy prequel planets that we'll get to soon enough...<br>

Yet despite the sought-after camp legacy, this TV special, aired only one time in 1978, is downright boring.<br /> <br /> Overlong "comedy" and/or musical skits featuring Harvey Korman as a robot, Bea Arthur as the Cantina bartender, Art Carney as a chummy mechanic, and Chewbacca's family: consisting of wife, son, and dad...the latter having a virtual reality "experience" with hologram Diahann Caroll... make for the longest ninety minutes ever filmed... And perhaps the worst skit has Bea Arthur as the owner of the Cantina, singing a melancholy song after closing time. Not forgetting a wimpy Jefferson Starship video and Carrie Fisher crooning to red-robbed Wookies about "Life Day": a Christmas type celebration the Empire wants to stop. Meanwhile, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and the faithful droids provide embarrassing cameos. But throughout the immense torture, a ten minute cartoon introducing Boba Fett is actually pretty cool. So <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4CtXcjib4o">click this link</a> to actually witness this infamous catastrophe that, before the Internet, was very difficult to find... But that’s only the beginning of a teaser that does in fact improve, but isn’t without a few questionable images…<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: left;"> </div> <div style="text-align: right;"> </div> <div style="text-align: right;"> </div> <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;
