His gruff trapper Zeb Macahan is a success just for being better suited to the genuinely muscular role than the completely miscast James Stewart in the horrendous motion picture, HOW THE WEST WAS WON, which on the small screen makes for a pretty entertaining sequel miniseries-style TV series that was an early "binge" watch...<br> <br> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> But the best stories go to Zeb's war deserter nephew Luke, played by Bruce Boxleitner. But upon rewatching you realize they aren’t in the movie enough.<br /> <br /> Unlike using comic relief mascots sparingly in a successful manor (so not to ware out their welcome), like John Belushi in ANIMAL HOUSE, Sean Penn in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, or Michael Keaton in BEETLEJUICE, the comic duo are needed much more in the first Disney film that spends too much time on Bill Bixby and his orphans who deem themselves The Apple Dumpling Gang. That’s right… the Gang isn’t even named after Knotts and Conway – but in this superior sequel they keep the title for continuity’s sake.<br /> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggACr0G2O2KJ0d9n1tJvnPp894CS9qJpfs8s3zrEOWFouHRj4gzLOWw8vSQ-ARWxV9OQKGrLH_hErLARn5x01T-C8vY3krCLd_f4ovdeQUlgsPUj9cERLppuA5Y5l7RW73iO91i_vWJYUo/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggACr0G2O2KJ0d9n1tJvnPp894CS9qJpfs8s3zrEOWFouHRj4gzLOWw8vSQ-ARWxV9OQKGrLH_hErLARn5x01T-C8vY3krCLd_f4ovdeQUlgsPUj9cERLppuA5Y5l7RW73iO91i_vWJYUo/s640/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elyssa Davalos and a shifty Robert Pine</td></tr> </tbody></table> We begin with the two bumbling crooks Theodore (Knotts) and Amos (Conway) who’ve gone straight. Riding around on a faithful mule they enter a mining town to hit a bank: depositing money this time. But two scruffy bank robbers, posing as tellers, steal their loot and the adventure begins – mostly dealing with “The Apple Dumpling Gang” being mistaken as sharpshooters since they accidentally thwarted the legendary Sheriff Hitchcock (Kenneth Mars), who keeps on their trail in a Wile E. Coyote fashion.<br /> <br /> Tim Matheson, as a young private in a Calvary Fort being marauded of supplies, drives the necessary plot; Harry Morgan runs the show with his right hand man played by CHIPS sarge Robert Pine; and providing the love interest (to Pine and then Matheson) is the gorgeous Elyssa Davalos as Morgan’s classy daughter.<br /> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiW-81BpCnqSW9riewR9t_EVumLJtJd3mCt4nANUyARz0J-ulUqEeK62iabs2n9I99VVlJSb2DaxBvtwDmh4c2pXo3iEiX-FssgyfsiKVkpcd416G19uvkhPSQ5Ag4OS0CB4_ANHefemMv/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="496" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiW-81BpCnqSW9riewR9t_EVumLJtJd3mCt4nANUyARz0J-ulUqEeK62iabs2n9I99VVlJSb2DaxBvtwDmh4c2pXo3iEiX-FssgyfsiKVkpcd416G19uvkhPSQ5Ag4OS0CB4_ANHefemMv/s640/4.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elyssa Davalos as Miss Millie Gaskill</td></tr> </tbody></table> Theodore and Amos go from the Fort to a prison to an underground lair run by Jack Elam and his henchman. This sequel does the same thing but in a much more entertaining story with better characters, including wily geek Charles Martin-Smith and his buddy Stephen W. Burns as heirs to the love bug, picking Herbie up in South America and then being chased around by mobsters.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFx9_rnya9Cih73T02p_94KLqN1RUn21LxEmL7mD5r5O6LXl15076wWGKd2NjJxsmXaX_vF_hR2hF3iibytP9QSivhEMTtBWDzw321ErCr1kvCWh4eM8rZBNAfHSLlcBnC7cGf3AhTpl8o/s1600/title00_103733757.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFx9_rnya9Cih73T02p_94KLqN1RUn21LxEmL7mD5r5O6LXl15076wWGKd2NjJxsmXaX_vF_hR2hF3iibytP9QSivhEMTtBWDzw321ErCr1kvCWh4eM8rZBNAfHSLlcBnC7cGf3AhTpl8o/s400/title00_103733757.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elyssa Davalos, Stephan Burns and Charles Martin Smith</td></tr> </tbody></table> The good guys meet a pickpocket orphan who becomes Herbie's best pal, and along the way journey on a cruise ship and even take part in a bullfight. Burns falls in love with freespirited socialite Cloris Leachman's daughter, the beautiful Elyssa Davalos, while Martin insists they run a con job, giving a little edge to the romance.<br /> <br /> HERBIE GOES BANANAS is an enjoyable romp from beginning to end, with many different locations and sticky situations for the characters (including Harvey Korman's cranky ship captain joining Leachman) and our titular bug to sneak out of. Villains John Vernon, Alex Rocco and Richard Jaeckel are both seedy and spooky for a Disney film, but they're no match for Herbie, who, though taking back seat a lot of the time, winds up stealing the show.<br /> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto;
