The
first two of Disney's Bueno Vista Herbie films, THE LOVE BUG and HERBIE GOES TO MONTE CARLO,
center on the little car involved in big races; the ultimate underdog
stories wherein Herbie is the focal point...

In the third installment,
HERBIE RIDES AGAIN, the cute lil' V-dub's merely used as a vehicle for a
plot centering on humans while the final sequel does the same thing but in a much
more entertaining story and better characters, including a wily Charles
Martin-Smith (AMERICAN GRAFFITI) and his handsome buddy Stephen W. Burns as heirs to
the love bug, picking Herbie up in South America and then being chased
around by mobsters.
The good guys meet a pickpocket orphan who becomes
Herbie's best pal, and along the way journey on a cruise ship and even
take part in a bullfight. Meanwhile, Burns falls in love with freespirited socialite Cloris Leachman's
daughter, the beautiful Elyssa Davalos, doing the cliché girl wearing glasses with real beauty soon to unveal (although she's cute either way), while Martin
insists they run a con job, giving a little edge to the romance.

HERBIE GOES BANANAS is an enjoyable romp from beginning to end, with
many different locations
and sticky situations for the characters (including Harvey Korman as a
cranky ship captain joining Leachman) and our titular bug to sneak
out of, dodging seedy villains John Vernon, Alex Rocco and Richard Jaeckel. But they're no match for Herbie, who,
though taking back seat a lot of the time, winds up stealing the show.
Adding to that is Donny Most, best known as "Ralph Malph" from HAPPY DAYS, as the surfer boyfriend of sexy vixen Linda Purl, the daughter of title character Cloris Leachman who, along with her chattering mother, and Purl's granny, Ann Southern, cruise around robbing just about anyone and anything and then, aided by millionaire Stuart Whitman and Leachman's real life son Bryan Englund, attempt an ingrown kidnapping plot. The ragtag bunch, despite being against the odds... cops out to kill them... have a laidback, frolicking fun time. Director Jonathan Demme keeps things moving smoothly. And keep an eye out from first-timer's Dennis Quaid, as a bellboy, and Bill Paxton, as a rookie cop.

The
first two Herbie films, THE LOVE BUG and HERBIE GOES TO MONTE CARLO,
center on the little car involved in big races; the ultimate underdog
stories wherein Herbie is the focal point.

In the third installment,
HERBIE RIDES AGAIN, the cute lil' V-dub's merely used as a vehicle for a
plot centering on humans. This sequel does the same thing but in a much
more entertaining story with better characters, including wily geek Charles
Martin-Smith and his buddy Stephen W. Burns as heirs to
the love bug, picking Herbie up in South America and then being chased
around by mobsters.

Elyssa Davalos, Stephan Burns and Charles Martin Smith

The good guys meet a pickpocket orphan who becomes
Herbie's best pal, and along the way journey on a cruise ship and even
take part in a bullfight. Burns falls in love with freespirited socialite Cloris Leachman's
daughter, the beautiful Elyssa Davalos, while Martin
insists they run a con job, giving a little edge to the romance.

HERBIE GOES BANANAS is an enjoyable romp from beginning to end, with many different locations
and sticky situations for the characters (including Harvey Korman's cranky ship captain joining Leachman) and our titular bug to sneak
out of. Villains John Vernon, Alex Rocco and Richard Jaeckel are both seedy
and spooky for a Disney film, but they're no match for Herbie, who,
though taking back seat a lot of the time, winds up stealing the show.
You can't help but to get involved in the story of a new head shrink (Brooks) of a crooked insane asylum who has an extreme fear of heights: From one situation to the next, this parody encompasses "Vertigo", "Psycho", "The Birds", "Frenzy", and all the (other) Hitch-flicks that has the main character being falsely accused of murder...

Homage-driven jabs at Alfred H's signature camera shots and dramatic musical scores are the funniest. Somewhere between "Blazing Saddles" (as the high-point) and "History of the World" (as a semi low-point), this movie has a cozy place within the Mel Brooks canon. Nothing gained, nothing lost. But you'll enjoy the ride, especially with Cloris Leachman and Harvey Korman going over-the-top, on purpose, like only they can.
