PAMELA DUNCAN, RICHARD GARLAND & ALLISON HAYES 'THE UNDEAD'

Pamela Duncan in THE UNDEAD Year: 1957 Rating: ****

The same year that Pamela Duncan and Richard Garland starred in Roger Corman's limp creature-feature ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS they were paired in one of the low-budget director's most ambitious, THE UNDEAD, with a modern frame-story of a prostitute hypnotized back into medieval times where she's falsely accused of being a witch...

But it's actually shape-shifting sorceress in ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN Allison Hayes who wants the stalwart knight Garland (looking like a handsome diesel truck mechanic in ancient knight's clothing) for herself... putting poor Pamela's character through the kind of on-the-run ringer that never lets up...

As close as Corman ever got to directing Shakespeare, the dialogue is of that poetic nature without being confusing... as the costumes and random special effects never look cheap or contrived...

Like Allison Hayes (with mute imp-sidekick Billy Barty) turning into either a cat or a bat within an otherwordly location for the audience and characters to be hectically wrapped into...

Aaron Saxon and Pamela Duncan in THE UNDEAD

Surrounded by worthy character-actors including an ambiguously nefarious Val Dufour as the modern-era hypnotist turned time-traveler, Dorothy Neumannand as the token good-witch and swarthy Corman-regular Richard Devon as the devil himself, THE UNDEAD is a kind of traipsing (through dark roads when not battling in Gothic interior) mind-game thriller between two beautiful woman who share surprisingly little screen time...

Making the lithe, vulnerable, full-lipped Duncan (visually anticipating Corman's stock-ingenue Susan Cabot) the perfect fateful prey to comparably voluptuous Allison Hayes, a love-to-hate medieval moll who deserved her own series of suspenseful horror/fantasy potboilers.
