<span style="color: #3d596d;">Sure there's a plot, initially worked-out between GTO and the boys – a cross-country race to Washington D.C. for “pinks” (pink slips) adds a destination but remains peripheral… Especially in the teaming-up of the polar opposite camps, a business relationship leading to a big race, while the final frame sums up the point of the entire road adventure without a single word, or resolution: If, for instance, a James Caan or Burt Reynolds were cast, which were two names the studios supposedly wanted... and there were probably a lot more studied actors considered over non-acting musicians... BLACKTOP might not have worked at all. The viewer would expect something that wasn’t meant to be, forgetting the purpose is the wheel and not who and what's behind it.</span><br />

After
 MEATBALLS, director Ivan Reitman and Bill Murray filmed
STRIPES, starring Murray and Harold Ramis, who co-wrote the summer camp
comedy and between both films directed Bill in the now legendary golfing
 venture CADDYSHACK…<br />
<br />
In STRIPES, when Bill Murray’s
John Winger, attempting to prove to his best friend Russell Ziskey,
played by Harold Ramis, that he isn’t too old and/or out of shape to
join the military, after completing only several trudging sit-ups, Ramis
 quips: "I think you're ready for the Special Olympics!” Well
 if not that, the Army, where Winger decides to go after having enough
of a nowhere existence, and being dumped by his hot blonde girlfriend,
who feels John’s antics just aren’t “cute anymore.” One of the funniest
scenes (embedded below) involves the two friends in the recruitment
office, awkwardly answering a particular question long before the <i>Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell</i> era… "We're not homosexual... But we are willing to learn."<br />

 Bill Murray is usually the endearing, independent rogue, it’s often

<i>We were in Westwood. It was getting late. They shot Harold and Sean’s

When Winger attempts to go AWOL and

Murray
 and Ramis are quite funny together, but they can get down and dirty
too. There’s a real edge to their chemistry here... And in films before

One of the great character-actors from the
1970’s, Warren Oates, playing the gruff Sgt. Hulka, inserts an edgy
brand of realism throughout the comedic proceedings. One scene that
brings out intense acting on Murray's part has Hulka and Winger meeting
alone in the barracks bathroom... Hulka takes off his helmet and
challenges Winger to punch him in the gut, off the record. In this scene
 a subliminal connection occurs between the two loggerheads. Meanwhile,
Oates' edgy dynamic is countered by John Larroquette who, playing the
doofus Captain Stillman, is truly the unlikable antagonist and plays
more for the zaniness of the picture.<br />

John Candy’s Ox is the endearing scene-stealer, and
winds up, during the troop's night out, mud wrestling a bevy of babes...
 But let’s shed some light on a few wonderful character actors,
including John Diehl as the dimwitted Cruiser, who has played everything
 from a vice cop to a psychotic… Speaking of which, one of the most
memorable rants comes from Conrad Dunn's Francis <i>Psycho</i> Sawyer:
“Now, any of you homos touch me, and I’ll kill ya,” he growls during the
 troop's initial introduction. Leading to Hulka’s now iconic reply,
“Lighten up, Francis.” <br />

While a majority of the film occurs at Boot Camp, the film suffers <i>after</i>
 the troop passes a last-minute drill test, and, being sent overseas,
Winger and Ziskey, along with Stella and Sean Young's Louise, steal an
all-terrain recreational vehicle and wind up having to rescue their
fellow soldiers, who had gone after them (mind you, Hulka <i>never</i>
gets captured). This segment is awkward, way too long and not very
funny, but STRIPES is the quintessential military comedy no matter… Even
 the flaws pass muster… And “That’s the fact, Jack!”<br />
<br />
Like
 ANIMAL HOUSE, Elmer Bernstein's music plays for theme more than
laughs. The piano bar riff embodying Winger's lazy countenance aside, a triumphant score blares throughout, as if part of a genuine
gung ho war feature (yet also reminiscent of Berstein's patriotic marching romp from
Steven Spielberg's zany 1941)...<br />
<br />
This allows the humor to subtly intrude
upon the gritty location, which is a character in itself: Harboring two
buddies (and real life creative partners continuing in GHOSTBUSTERS and
GROUNDHOG DAY) who will always be remembered within the high ranks of
cinematic glory.

In making a story about the Civil War, where “Brother fought Brother” on American soil, what better medium than an artist to tell the Civil War saga from both sides. <br />
<br />
In this exceptional TV miniseries, we meet John Hammond’s passive John Geyser, who dreams of sketching illustrations in the big city. He lives on a farm in the South and his family’s bent on defending their land from the Northern Yankees. Although when THE BLUE AND THE GRAY begins and John (to the chagrin of his father and patriotic brothers) leaves home – traveling north to get a job from his cousin at a small town newspaper – there’s only the impending rumor of war… Which doesn’t last long.   <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">John Hammond's John Geyser sketching both sides</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
When the war begins, after his brothers and cousins have all signed up, Geyser has a meeting with Abe Lincoln – who saw him sketching he and wife Mary Todd. The 16th President gives John permission to sketch both sides of the war so he doesn’t have to eventually fight his own siblings. In a previous scene, John had turned against the South because of racism: his friend, a freed slave played by Paul Winfield, was lynched for harboring runaways. This was the last straw. <br />
<br />
The big battle scenes are shot well, and best yet, they're up close and personal. Of John’s four Yankee cousins (including Bruce Abbott and David W. Harper), Brian Kerwin as Malachy, who’s afraid of battle and surreptitiously runs away when things get hairy, is mainly centered on as he goes from “coward” to hero in the course of several campaigns.  <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Penny Peyser's Emma Geyser loses her cool</td></tr>

Stacy Keach plays an intrepid scout named Jonas Steele – he works for Lincoln personally and has the dangerous job of riding to the front lines to check on what the South is up to. The always dependable Keach makes a worthy maverick and takes John under his wing, but his constant dreams of the future are annoyingly farfetched. These scenes (and a few subplots, mostly involving top men discussing strategies) are the only slight drawback to an otherwise perfect tale that, despite a three-part run time, is hardly searing or tedious. <br />
<br />
There are many locations and situations on and off the battlefield, like John’s romance with society girl turned front line nurse; Steele’s courtship with John’s pretty cousin; and John’s tough sister (Penny Peyser) slowly losing her sanity – yet the baseline remains at the rural Geyser home. The final stand takes place here, and as some exceptionally cutthroat Yankee soldiers attack his family, John must chose which side he’s really on.   <br />

An excellent miniseries that... despite the presence of bigger stars including Gregory Peck as Lincoln and Lloyd Bridges as the Geyser patriarch... never loses place of the important "smaller" characters, providing not only historic battles but involving undercover missions and plenty of suspenseful one-on-one fights, including a good old fashion duel.<br />
<br />
THE BLUE AND THE GRAY has everything for both historians and die hard fans of the <i>war movie</i> genre.<br />
