You know it's really tough; all these dystopian future novel adaptations, and being a... slightly older person trying to not only keep up with each one, and to remember what happened during the last venture, but how each ended to (almost finally) lead to DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT PART ONE, which is the first part of two final bows...

That, when it comes down to it, can all be blamed on the goblin-faced (yet formerly brilliant) Quentin Tarantino: after he told the Weinstein boys to split KILL BILL in half, the last films of the final doomed teen movie adaptations have had two sections. So here, instead of just a review of the latest, THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT PART ONE, we'll go back and re-blog the entire franchise, thus far, in order, so that the only place to find anything DIVERGENT-related will be here and here only. And when the next (final?) one comes out, it too will be added... Hoping this works for the growing Millennial audience...
When J.K. Simmons as Fletcher, a hard-nosed teacher at a prestigious music conservatory, mentions how jazz is practically dead thanks to "Starbucks Jazz," it’s the one time he really connects with the audience, because it’s true: That genre has been practically done away with, at this point sounding more like a spy flick or game show than the kind of pioneering improvisational genius that took blood, sweat and tears to create, and perfect.
Well it's blood, sweat and one tough tear that Andrew, played by Mills Teller, sheds to make the cut in Fletcher’s band room, an intentionally claustrophobic setting where most of the movie's set. From Simmons we experience screeching commands and furious tantrums reminiscent of cinematic drill sergeants, ranging from Louis Gossett Jr. to Lee Ermy, and his subjects are along for the pulsating, gut-wrenching ride.

While Fletcher’s rants are as politically-incorrect as you can get away with today, and Andrew’s edgy determination brings out a terrific performance (and spot-on drum mimicking) from Teller, WHIPLASH isn't without clichés, like a tacked on love interest and various sideliners, from family members to fellow musicians, catered to make our lead character seem more viable, or something. Meanwhile, no matter how many times the band plays, and the teacher scolds them for getting it wrong, it all sounds... similar.

But what really puts WHIPLASH over the top is a standoff finale that, in a musical sense, equals if not triumphs any pulsating action movie climax – summing up both student and teacher while the theme becomes clearer than ever. COLLECTIVE RANK: Jedi, Rebel, Droid, Sith.

THE SPECTACULAR NOW

A cross between John Cusack’s pontificating good guy in SAY ANYTHING and Chris Penn’s boozing jock in THE WILD LIFE, a refreshingly average/realistic looking Miles Teller (who was Penn's character in the FOOTLOOSE remake) plays Sutter, the most popular kid in high school and a known campus party animal. It’s surprising to several people when he hooks up with smart girl Aimee, played by THE DESCENDANTS actress Shailene Woodley, and their romance blossoms.

The nice thing about SPECTACULAR NOW is it’s not that spectacular, and never tries to be. In several scenes, awkward moments play out without intrusive cuts... like the couple’s first sexual experience or anytime Sutter's confidence trumps those around him... making the film seem more realistic than catered to mainstream audiences.

Although Miles Teller plays the role a bit too grownup, often coming across more like a used car salesman than high schooler, and his routine drinking habit would better fit a thirty-five year old construction worker, he makes the part work, balancing vulnerability and wild card cockiness around ordinary people with their lives mapped out. Meanwhile, an intentionally plain looking Woodley remains a solid foundation, and their scenes together are never sappy or pretentious.

The third act – as Sutter meets his estranged father – could have been the point where melodrama replaces the story’s casual pace, but thankfully even the most intense moments remain on an even-keel that, like the main character’s personality, will keep you involved from start to finish.
