First off, the otherwise competent character-actress Allison Janney's highly praised role as infamous ice skater Tonya Harding's foul-mouthed, chain-smoking mother, is nothing but a lazy imitation of an angry white trash, middle-aged bitch you'd see in any movie... She's already predicted for an Oscar nod and will probably win. But if a character is portrayed as being completely negative and pointedly one-sided, where's the irony? Where's the performance?

Lacking direction and awkwardly pieced-together by Craig Gillespie, there's nothing going on within this party-trick of a biopic that's already being compared to Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS. Actually, because Margot Robbie co-starred in Scorsese's modern GOODFELLAS clone, WOLF OF WALL STREET, she's a cousin twice-removed within that particular cinematic universe, and, along with CASINO, he's revamped the vivacious pop culture opus three times — not including stuff by other filmmakers like I TONYA and, years ago, BOOGIE NIGHTS: Basically, at this point, the GOODFELLAS template could be a genre in itself...

Meanwhile, Robbie, partially uglied-up for the role, plays it safe and bland — although, she has more color than her boring male co-lead, who needed a few hundred doses of Eric Roberts' sinister yet vulnerable passion ala STAR 80 (another obvious influence) to keep this sleeping giant awake. Perhaps that's why Janney gets all the praise — in a cesspool of corpses, she's a tad more interesting than the nothingness surrounding her.
With Elmore Leonard gone, and Quentin Tarantino making either War, Western or Kung Fu flicks, it’s nice to hear the JACKIE BROWN style groove of classic and modern-nostalgic R&B guiding a hustling-bustling crime caper flick along… And it helps if it’s actually good.

Will Smith’s con man extraordinaire Nicky and wannabe player Margot Robbie’s Jess are made for each other, almost too well…

In a nicely edited sequence, Nicky teaches the stunning blonde how to "hypnotize" a potential victim: followed by so many easy scores with the help of a band of hustlers under Nicky’s watch, your head will spin – yet with the steady music and solid mainline it’s a nice kind of dizzy despite one too many recent flashbacks, and the bigger cons testing a logical ability to suspend disbelief.

Broken into two halves, the initial overdose of steamy bedroom sequences pay off so the leads, developing with each other, mean more when the prime "gotcha" moments occur. And Will Smith proves his worth as an actor, always keeping you guessing if he’s telling the truth, taking you for a ride, or both. Let's just hope the immense publicity for FOCUS pays: It's well worth the price of seeing everyone else being ripped off. OVERALL RATING: Jedi, Rebel, Droid, Sith.

“Wouldn't this be a great world,” says Albert Brooks as the somewhat average and completely smitten Aaron Altman in BROADCAST NEWS, “if insecurity and desperation made us more attractive? If needy were a turn-on?” If that kind of world sounds interesting, then ABOUT TIME is your cup of English Tea… And despite the casting of popular American actress Rachel McAdams, this is as quirky-British-indie as you’re gonna get… This year, anyhow.

The quirk king himself, Bill Nighy, plays an important supporting role – especially when he tells his son, the film’s regular guy/underdog hero... a lanky, clumsy, neurotic, passive/aggressive 21-year old redhead, Tim… that they have the ability to go back (not forward) in time to change the course of personal events… So if something goes awry you can quickly make it better. Sounds a lot like THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE combined with GROUNDHOG DAY but it’s more SLIDING DOORS meets any Rom-Com where the main character does all they can to keep true love alive.

More than eye-candy... Margot Robbie does a fine job as the girl of the underdog's dreams...

Tim’s interests with this new power has nothing to do with making money or changing the world: he simply wants a girlfriend. Some of the best scenes occur before McAdams, as American import Mary, enters the picture… Tim tries to politely bed-down his sister's gorgeous best friend. And, after learning a thing or two about fate and getting lucky (and how the two don’t always mix), the primary romance begins: He meets Mary during a match-up date and... without giving too many clever twists away, things don’t always go as planned… He uses time travel (no machine needed, you just stand inside an enclosed room, clench your fists and close your eyes tight) to alter sporadic events, ranging from his new relationship to helping a friend’s stage play to choosing the right best man.

Some of the characters, including Tim and his artistic family, are a tad over-contented and unrealistically cozy… Sometimes writer/director Richard Curtis tugs too tightly on the heartstrings… And eventually, by the somewhat overlong conclusion, there’s a feeling the time travel aspect was a mere plot device to serve up a clichéd existential theme... But for a worthy alternative to big budget comic book movies and any sort of mainstream Hollywood romance, this is a “date flick” that should benefit either party…
