Before Rick Springfield coveted Jessie’s Girl, his character Zac, along with Richard Hatch as Captain Apollo, ran into some really bad interstellar luck…
Apollo and his little brother were on a routine patrol when a fleet of Cylon Raiders, breaking a peace treaty that would end a thousand yearlong war, attacked from behind a docking station…

Zac's tragic death began a series both groundbreaking and unoriginal...

The latter because the dogfights in space resembled the previous year’s blockbuster STAR WARS, and the broken ground was all its own – halfway through the first and only season, the formidable Cylons were too expensive to film: as stories became less centered on glorious battles, the initially popular show was falling through the cracks… Even some faithful hardcore fans were losing interest.
But the three-part pilot episode is something to marvel. Actually, it’s a two-hour plus movie later broken into a pilot. The main difference being the human traitor Baltar gets beheaded in one, and is spared for the watered-down TV epic titled SAGA OF A STAR WORLD.

For a generation of young outer space junkies needing a fix between STAR WARS and what would soon be THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, Glen A. Larson (who recently passed away) created a series centering on the titular Battlestar Galactica, a sole vessel after a Pearl Harbor style surprise attack destroys every other Battlestar in the vast fleet. Commander Adama, played by BONANZA patriarch Lorne Green, was the only veteran warrior who didn’t trust the Cylons. After which his mission is to seek out a distant planet known as Earth (let's forget GALACTICA 1980, a different show entirely)!
STAR WARS similarities didn’t end with special effects. In the Han Solo role is Dirk Benedict as Lt. Starbuck, a cocky, gambling womanizer who's also a hotshot pilot. Flaky and unreliable on “the ground”, he’s ultra dependable during any Viper Vs Raider dogfight. His partner-in-crime, Boomer, provides a bridge between Starbuck and the polar opposite Apollo, our very own Luke Skywalker but with more experience and responsibility up front.
“Why do the girls always go for the bad guy or the naughty guy?” Richard Hatch griped in a Cult Film Freak Interview.

“I think writers love to write for deliciously bad characters or flawed characters, and when a character is kind of the, you know, good guy, they’re not as interested." But every main player was flanked by a sidekick: Adama had an ultra-serious Commander Tigh while Starbuck's two lovely ladies had each other to compete with.

The BATTLESTAR GALACTICA movie, unlike some of the less daring latter episodes, catapulted a firestorm of laserblasting battles, suspenseful intrigue, a dash of romance, pulpy banter and best of all, geek-lusted hotties like Jane Seymour and Maren Jensen, and is highly recommended for even those who prefer the progressed 2004 reboot series, which, during its popular four-season run, served up a hotbed of political intrigue and steamy serialized melodrama, way more modern and realistic than the 70's science-fantasy that yours truly appreciates, and prefers. So let’s ALL say thanks to Glen A. Larson: for fans of either the old or new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, if it weren’t for him, there’d be nothing but empty space!
Richard Hatch, who played Captain Apollo on the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA television series, lasting only one year before a premature demise... morphing into another shortlived venture set thirty years later wherein Apollo was long gone... energetically shared on a Cult Film Freak interview that his personal favorite episode was THE HAND OF GOD…
“I just like the essence that there was a message from Earth. I loved being up in the Star Chamber… I loved the whole feeling of it. It wasn’t an Apollo episode necessarily, but I just liked the episode a lot, I thought it kind of left with this kind of mystical feeling of hope, of something greater out in the universe... I love the feeling of that.” So THE HAND OF GOD, a title that resurfaces in the 2004 reboot, is the final episode of the series, and reintroduced the Cylons, those silver-plated heavies that stalked the Galactica, the surviving vessel of a once-numbered host of immense battleships, and the return of the menacing Cylon Raiders, razor-like warships providing dogfights reminiscent of the original STAR WARS... Since cash ran out halfway through the BG series, the Cylons were too expensive, as were the outer space special effects… even though a lot of the same stock shots were being used again and again... In fact, child actor Robbie Rist, who would, only one year later, play Doctor Zee on the ill-fated follow-up GALACTICA 1980 – centering on an aged crew (sans Apollo) finding Earth thirty years later – described the dogfight repetition as: “One Cylon ship was always crossing my screen from left to right before it was hit by a human's guns. I guess making new FX shots was too expensive.”
Very wise observation, Cousin Oliver, and after the laser-blasting first half of the original show’s one and only season, the crew either dealt with in-house traitor Baltar or found other antagonists to grapple with including a group of dreary Nazi-like soldiers, or met with special guest stars such as Fred Astaire... and it just wasn't the same.

HAND OF GOD brings us back to the primal roots, centering on Apollo bringing Starbuck (the devil-may-care Han Solo type), and their two lady friends, up into The Star Chamber: an isolated section of the starship located at the very top/back, somewhere near the main thrusters.

For Starbuck, this is the perfect location to score, but Apollo has his own more tactical agenda...

At that observatory vantage point, the far regions of outer space can be viewed from a silvery cockpit chair gripped inside a domed structure, where a built-in monitor picks up random signals and/or distress calls, and in this particular case, The Galactica is receiving some kind of signal from what could be… Earth!

Turns out being a possible Cylon trap, and that’s where things return to the good old days. The plot has Starbuck and Apollo preparing for a do-or-die mission to the Cylon warship… To sneak inside and disable the shield activators so the Battlestar can, like the STAR WARS Death Star, blow up the impending vessel before it destroys them. "She's an orbiting killer, capable of destroying every ship we have," a grim Colonel Tigh warns.

Cylons Return

A cool episode liken to classic WW2 perilous mission flicks, the only downside being the collection of side-characters giving long-winded farewells to the brave warriors. And finally, Apollo and Starbuck, once inside the Cylon War Ship, wind up climbing down a metallic ladder, quickly face off with a sole laser-blasting Cylon, and that’s pretty much that…

More of a rushed HIGH NOON showdown than a full-fledged action-packed battle, and yet it's nice to see the iconic Cylon in partial glory once again: Providing THE HAND OF GOD a neat farewell to a show that, to save money, had to get rid of the best thing it had going...

Making this episode not an intentional finale but an attempt to possibly venture into season two, promising Cylons would reign once again – a distress call that, like an eventual message sent from Earth after Starbuck and Apollo split for the celebration downstairs, was never heeded.
Well it was more than a moment – in fact this secondary series lasted a handful of episodes and despite the hatred amongst fans of the original series, it wasn’t that bad. Especially CONQUEST OF THE EARTH, a three-part pilot beginning with the Galactica a few years older: Which means its inhabitants aged as well.
Lorne Greene’s Admiral Adama has a white beard and Herb Jefferson’s Boomer has gray hair – but where’s Starbuck and Apollo? Well they didn’t stick around but we have Kent McCord as a grownup Boxey and Barry Van Dyke’s Lt. Dillon. Both go undercover to scout Earth but the catch is, they can’t say who they are nor display any powers. They slip up by letting their motorcycles take flight and wind up helping a frustrated scientist (Robert Reed) make progress in clean nuclear energy. But the point of this tribute is Richard Lynch, the incredible character-actor who passed away last year. Known for antagonist roles, Lynch played a seedy convict named Wolfe on the original series classic two part episode GUN ON ICE PLANET ZERO and here he’s another villain but with more layers.
Xavier works aboard the Galactica and like all great backstabbers, he wants to make his own ground. He travels back to 1940’s Germany during the height of World War II, and plans on helping the Nazis who’ve built a giant missile/rocket – it’s then up to our heroes, along with hottie Robyn Douglass and soldier/spy Christopher Stone, to thwart Xavier’s devious plans that can… you got it, help really bad people take over the world!
Lynch stuck around for a few more episodes – his formidable presence lent a sinister prowess to the show that, after his departure, fell into cliché and banal scripts that led to the ultimate demise.

And Robbie Rist, famous (or infamous) as Cousin Oliver from THE BRADY BUNCH, played the child genius Dr. Zee – but was replaced later on with another young actor. Zee shows the Galactica council what it’d look like if Cylons attacked Earth, which explains the groovy screencaps below, so, if you’re not convinced by now to give this maligned short-lived series a fair shake, there’s nothing much else to say: except to repeat condolences to Richard Lynch, who made the cinematic and television experience a lot darker in a great way.
Why were you replaced on the series as Dr. Zee?

I think I learned they replaced me by watching the show. Show business is a cruel mistress. I have no idea why they changed Zee's. Maybe I just didn't cut it.

How was it working with Lorne Greene?

My experience has always been that, the more work and the more established the actor, the cooler they are. The a--holes always tended to be those on the way up who were insecure about their place in the industry.

Were you a fan of the original series?

I am a first generation part of the STAR WARS generation. Of course I loved GALACTICA. I grew weary of it in short order as it seemed that one Cylon ship was always crossing my screen from left to right before it was hit by a human's guns. I guess making new FX shots was too expensive.
