How were you selected for the role of Peggy Gordon in BIG WEDNESDAY?
There is a funny story about my audition. I was given the script and
invited to audition for the role Patti (d’Arbanville) ended up playing,
but I had already recently played similar characters. So
I asked if I could instead audition for the role of Peggy. John
(Milius) said yes, but that I had to come into Warner Brothers Studio
and show them how I looked in a bikini.

I was appalled
since I was a “serious” actress, trained in London, etc. But, I wasn’t
going to get the role if I didn’t, so I showed up in a trench coat with a
bikini underneath. I told them to watch me carefully and not blink, and
“flashed” everyone in the room then quickly closed the coat. They all
laughed and I had the role then and there.
Poor Linda Blair – she just can’t seem to beat the devil... Here the iconic EXORCIST starlet plays the
daughter of a wealthy couple. Her father’s a stockbroker and freelance photographer mom just lost her sister in a tragic car accident
(that opens the movie). Dead Aunt left a daughter that needs a place to
stay – and that’s the set up.
The original title, STRANGER IN OUR HOUSE,
fits much better than SUMMER OF FEAR. A stranger indeed… Lee Purcell’s
mousy Julia Trent is scared of her own shadow, and Blair’s Rachel Bryant has a
friendly horse that turns demonic when Julia arrives. Other odd things
occur including Rachel’s father, beau and bro (Jeff East) falling into Julia’s spell (although Lee Purcell’s alluring enough for that to happen sans voodoo)...
So
it’s up to Rachel, who found an assortment of suspicious items in
Julia’s suitcase... from carven statues to manipulated photos... to prove to
everyone her cousin’s a bonafide witch. But that won't be easy: Julia's got the popular vote all around...

You’d think, with
future horror icon Wes Craven behind the lens, there’d be more spooks and scares.
Perhaps the made-for-TV limited his ability to really frighten us. There are some fitfully suspenseful moments, and Purcell plays a shy
loner slowly morphing into an evil woman with subtlety and wicked charm. Meanwhile, Blair's hit and miss as the victim, providing her usual intensity... Yet her horrendously dated mushroom hairdo, and all that whining, makes us, for the most
part, want the witch to come out on top. Or maybe it’s that Lee Purcell makes such a wonderful villain – too bad she doesn’t
“witch out” a lot sooner and for much longer.
We were later bridesmaids in Pamela Franklin’s real-life wedding to Harvey Jason... I remember that Orson had a personal chef on the film set and we, the starving young things, would have to smell the delicious aromas of the fabulous meals he would cook for Orson while we ate our awful brown bag lunches of soggy tuna sandwiches and watched Orson being served Cordon Bleu dishes and fine wines! I also remember suffering a lot from having to “drown” in a polluted pond-over and over. No stunt doubles, just me and the pond scum. I wondered if I would catch a rare disease. And a bit of trivia is that Michael Ontkean, the hunky guy in NECROMANCY, and dear Sam Melville (Bear in BIG WEDNESDAY) were both in the TV series THE ROOKIES together and I had the pleasure of working with them both. The same year Tim Matheson helped lead the Delta Fraternity to victory in ANIMAL HOUSE, he co-starred in a much smaller and far more subtle, less historically significant and practically impossible to find comedy that also involved a food fight, although his character, high school quarterback Kevin Hawkins, is nowhere to be found when the munchies fly…
Either is his on/off girlfriend Christine Alexander. Played by the lovely and talented Lee Purcell a year after the surf classic BIG WEDNESDAY, she desperately wants to become class president, a title pretty much in the bag: That is until political manipulator Bruno Kirby as Bobby DeVito, along with future WHITE SHADOW star Thomas Carter as sidekick Dean Hampton, discovers an underdog to possibly steal the election away from the energetic shoe-in, Christine, who's not only popular but can really deliver a heartfelt speech about obscurity and suicide...

Enter the film’s buried lead… As Darryl Fitzgerald, THE WANDERERS character-actor John Friedrich, usually cast as unstrung neurotic types, provides an everyman dark horse candidate that, like much of the cast herein, behaves more like college students than high schoolers... Although Didi Conn, the same year she played the endearing Frenchy in GREASE, fits the bubbly youthful aura to a tee. With her wide signature grin and an immense crush on the climbing Darryl, she’s the true diamond in the rough, perfectly acting her naïveté.
The breezy title, shown in neon licorice font during a frolicking beach party opening, makes ALMOST SUMMER seem like a free-for-all high school romp, when in actuality the plot is lean and contained, strictly adhering to the fairly serious election plotline.
And possibly caused by the fact many bootleg VHS-converted titles have been edited from their original source, the only real downside is that we never get to know the characters well enough before the ballots are counted... especially Friedman's Darryl: turning from unknown zero to popular politician, he should have been more fleshed-out for the transition to really matter... Also more interaction between John and polar opposite Lee Purcell, the two most interesting performers throughout, would have worked to energize the heated competition...

Instead, Purcell's sporadic spats with Tim Matheson are reminiscent of any high school melodrama, and her hinted-at romance with Bruno Kirby is as believable as Hilary Clinton hooking up with Karl Rove. Perhaps some party time groovin' to The Beach Boys would help alleviate the busy and stressful wheeling and dealing had on campus. Maybe the writers were making a grownup story within a youth oriented setting, on purpose, to show how politics can effect the youth culture, or something... But Either way, the talented actors and actresses make this SUMMER worth experiencing... at least once.
Bear was played by the late Sam Melville, best known for his part as a cop in THE ROOKIES television show.

His character Bear is the baseline of the movie: both father figure and mentor, and during the party is a very liberal chaperone.

There is a epic quality to this character. In a movie centering on young people running wild, he is the safety net.

The pivotal Bear wedding scene is the film's centerpiece, as Jack and Matt become friends once again.
"I loved working with Sam Melville (Bear); he was a wonderful person and terrific actor. That scene has a wonderful bittersweet quality to it that is so true of time passing, people growing up and the inevitable changes of life." Lee Purcell
The funeral scene involving Matt, Jack and Leroy reflecting on their fallen friend Waxer at a military graveyard is one of the most poignant in the film, especially the eulogy given by Jan-Michael Vincent.

MATT JOHNSON: "We're gathered here to say a few words about our friend Jim King. We called him Waxer. I'd just like to say that… he was a good surfer… and a really great guy. He had a nice cutback. He rode the nose real well. He was kind of screwed up the way he treated women, but he always got the one he wanted. So it doesn't matter anyway because he was a good guy all the way around. He'd always give people waves... Just give them a wave. He'd always stick up for his friends in a fight. He wasn't worth a damn but he was always right in there. I don't ever remember a big day that Waxer wouldn't go out and ride with his friends. Old Waxer was our friend. He was a little part of us. And we're gonna miss him."

Waxer is a very memorable, important character. He's the number one party animal, the mascot: representing the epitome of having a good time, which makes his loss the turning point of the film.
