Like something off TV from the late seventies/early eighties night soaps
ala "Dallas" or "Dynasty" but centering on a car company and with curse
words and full-frontal nudity (the Kathleen Beller pool scene is quite a
nice surprise). Tommy Lee Jones is a race car driver/designer hired by a
rich family to make a new affordable fuel efficient car and gets tangled in
the web that always permeates the rich and powerful in literature and
films. This is just fluff, but sometimes entertaining fluff. Robert
Duvall is surprisingly dull as the somewhat villainous grandson of
Lawrence Olivier, Olivier who plays wholeheartedly a Henry Ford meets
Darth Vadar type matriarch of a powerful family that's falling apart at
the seams.
Okay so this was edited from a longer version and comes off as a
greatest hits of Howard Hughes. The story merely glosses through
different aspects of his life without much detail. Tommy Lee Jones was
good... but at the end you're not sure what made him driven, or crazy,
in the first place.
This John Milius Vietnam flick has low-budget written all over it,
especially when it counts. The talented actors are wasted, and a
romantic subplot that borders on ludicrious helps waste them, and action
scenes that leave the viewer wondering not only "What's going on?" but
"When it gonna end?" Perhaps Milius, who wrote a good percentage of
"Apocolypse Now", in trying for another Vietnam epic, ends up with a
"G.I. Joe" meets "Top Gun" in the process. This isn't even corny in an
endearing sense, it's just plain bad.

This is a bad made-for-TV film that's not so bad, at least the first
half centering on a family consisting of a father, a mother, and a
teenager daughter who - during the 1950s - move from Texas to
California. On the way they run into the element that ruins the flow of
the movie, and ironically it's the Motorcycle Gang, led by Jake Busey
who resembles a flaky nineties surfer more than a fifties gang member
and is about an intimidating as a housefly. This is where the movie hits
a wall, and explodes. Sadly, once-great John Milius directed this.

After directing the brilliant anti-war film Cross of Iron, Sam
Peckinpah went into a dizzy retirement, and here's what he made at his
dizziest. Truckers on CB radios versus a crooked cop. This should be
called "BJ and the Billy the Kid", as Kris Kristofferson stars as the
rebel trucker, and his usually dependable laidback personality is
boring. Ali McGraw, who was pretty bad in the brilliant Peckinpah film The Getaway,
is just as bad here, but without a good story to lift her above the
fray. Burt Young and Ernest Borgnine are lackluster, as is Peckinpah's
signature style... full of slow-motion action and snappy edits... which
is hardly visible at all.
The John Carpenter version has a relatively small number of men trapped
in an Arctic outpost, and you get to know them all by name, personality,
share their claustrophobic frenzy and follow their fates accordingly.
In this movie there's two main characters, a woman who is totally
misplaced, and about a dozen nameless men who walk from room to room
talking about a spaceship. John Carpenter told the story in a far better
fashion... where you can at least follow each character through the
nightmare as opposed to watching a dated stage play with too many
characters parading before a stagnate camera. And the famous line,
"Watch The Skies," is uttered by a lanky scientist. Which makes sense
since there's nothing to see on the ground.

How
can a movie directed by Roger Corman and starring Shelley Winters as a
bank robber with sons played by Don Stroud, Robert Walden and last but
not least Robert DeNiro not be great? Judging Corman films can be
difficult since they don't aspire for much, but this is a lazy exercise
in a filmmaker pushing an envelope with nothing inside. For DeNiro fans
there's not much here. His character just stands around with a dumb look
and every once in a while says something in an over-the-top hillbilly
accent. Don Stroud is really the focal point as "Herman", the psychotic
eldest son, but his performance does nothing but grate on the nerves.
And Shelley Winters collects a paycheck. Corman produced BOXCAR BERTHA
and CRAZY MAMA are much better.
Mark L. Lester rules. STUNTS involves stuntmen getting picked off by a
mysterious killer. Robert Forster's little brother is one of them, and
he investigates. Darrell Fetty, Joanna Cassidy, Fiona Lewis, Bruce
Glover and the late Ray Sharky round out the cast. The acting is
wonderful and the action is bar none. The stuntmen are killed off like
campers in a slasher flick, and the tension mounts with precision.
Lester is a miracle worker. He takes low budget movies and turns them
into gold. Or at least, silver. And with Robert Forster at the helm:
this one shines.

This is a pretty bad movie, but oh how it delivers. Not quite sure what it
wants to be, it aspires for action/adventure, a little horror,
psychological drama, and of course tons of Hitchcockesque suspense. One
story centers on Kirk Douglas who is supposedly killed by terrorists in
front of his son, played by Andrew Stevens, a psychic boy-wonder under
the care of evil John Cassavetes, wants to use his "powers" for the
military, or something. And Douglas has to avoid the evil agents and try
finding his son again. The initial action scenes involving Douglas are
well-done. But the real star is Amy Irving as a young high school girl
with even more psychic powers than Stevens, and she ends up at a home
for "gifted children" that becomes CARRIE on the Hallmark Channel.
title: GHOST TOWN
year: 2007

cast: Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear

rating: ***1/2

Written
and directed by David Koepp, this gives the wry-guy Ricky Gervais a
decent showcase. Plot centers on a grumpy dentist who goes in for
surgery and then finds out later he died for six minutes, and as a
result he can see ghosts... much like that kid in "The Sixth Sense", but
this ghost-spotter is more annoyed than frightened of the pursuing
spectors. Greg Kinnear, as the most charming and most persistant of the
ghosts tailing our anti-charm hero, "hires" him to thwart his wife from
marrying "the wrong guy". It then turns into a fun love story: although it's much more funny when the good guy is sarcastic and bitter i.e. himself.

"The
Three Amigos" centers on three dim-bulb actors who go to Mexico
thinking they're filming a movie and end up in a real situation battling
bad guys who want to kill them. "Tropic Thunder" centers on three
dim-bulb actors who think they're filming a movie and end up... doing
"Three Amigos" all over again, but very badly. This could have been an
at least halfway decent bad movie if there wasn't the sidestory about
Ben Stiller's character's fading career, which makes it horrificly
horribly awful. Ben Stiller goes over the top and isn't funny, Jack
Black is totally wasted, and Robert Downey Jr. as a pretentious
Australian actor playing a black army officer is somewhat impressive but
gets annoying, fast.

What's rare about movies, especially that of the action or science-fiction nature, is there are usually two or three leads. That is, two males, an Alpha and Beta, and one female ingenue that you only see enough to drive the two men crazy.
And in this multi-layered, completely entertaining 1954 Disney adventure, there are plenty of characters to center on including two buried leads for their scientific value, yet only one, Mason's brilliant yet borderline insane Nemo, is the entire reason for the group to go 10,000 leagues deeper than a book taken seriously by everyone at that time, written by the famous Prof. Pierre Aronnax (the Jules Verne of the movie), played by a subdued, grounded, very important (and narrating) Paul Lukas, who becomes more of an unappreciated middleman between the edgy Nemo and the cocky, rogue Douglas; the latter who, years later, would possibly inspire Steve McQueen in THE GREAT ESCAPE and/or Han Solo in STAR WARS, stealing the movie outright, as if it were his very own... like that stolen treasure in the seal's room. But the conversations between Professor Aronnax and Captain Nemo range from pretty much everything: to the war, basic human nature and our overall existence.
And last but not least is an aged Peter Lorre, more heavyset and friendly than his eerie and sinister youth, resembling character-actor Burt Young (before there was a Burt Young to be compared to).

Lorre's Conseil is the only thing (moral compass) really holding back Douglas's Ned Land from continuing to steal more and more treasure that Nemo had taken from the sea floor, and that Ned wanted to do beforehand, while Nemo's busy destroying war ships, which is how, after a mysterious first act, boats were supposedly being ferociously and fatally attacked by a rumored, unstoppable sea beast... initially bringing the three investigative leads together in the first place: all reluctantly "rescued" into the classy mad man's submarine, The Nautilus. And eventually, during the famous conclusion, a giant formidable squid tries taking the sub/ship, and crew, apart with its powerful tentacles...
Herein Douglas finally almost proves his heroic worth to Mason's perpetually untrusting Nemo, although at this point, after a relatively long yet flowing two-hours, the adventure, now taking place on the island where the ill-fated war ships set out to sea, there's a literally explosive conclusion. Just imagine Nemo destroying British war ships on the way to stopping Hitler, and you might just want to kick his idealistic ass...
Well this is obviously years before WWII, and still, the sane trio realizes he's a sick man. But Nemo's edgy, anti-war status is somewhat understandable since these war ships have to do with slavery that he was involved with, and yet, despite the deep stuff, a lot of the film has Douglas hanging with both the cute seal and Peter Lorre, reveling in the booze and booty as Lorre catches tips from the brave hero (while peripherally "protecting" his boss) as Douglas, subliminally becoming a sort of SIERRA MADRE Bogart, only nicer, is yearning to take the treasure chest for himself...

Meanwhile, Nemo considers all the underwater elements to be the real treasures and/or discoveries, ranging from aquatic elements that can make food and cigars... Basically, you can live an entire life underwater, and Nemo needs the Professor as his own personal Captain's log-pen for what could be a glorious journal when (and if) completed.
With a perfect combination of scientific exposition and a handing-off of daring-do adventures, all completely resulting from the characters: from battling headhunters to that awesome giant squid, LEAGUES takes us lower than any movie...

Yet, although dated with a few corny singalongs by an initially hyperactive Douglas (few can get away with such kitsch and still seem cool, wearing a shirt resembling Christmas candy cane, to boot), contrasting with his brainy partners and eventually, all heads connect in one of the best Disney features that... although only slightly wielding dated (albeit completely apt) monstrous creature effects... looks great outside and even better inside as any movie today, especially the plush interior of Nemo's ultimate submarine... Thus the Nautilus, which is also a spooky-looking boat resembling some kind of primal dragon sea monster of the depths, is both a character in itself and the reason for everything to take place, uniting four human beings that couldn't be more different, and yet fitting together, perfectly.
With loads of "what were we thinking" hindsight, you'd think TOUGH GUYS was made decades after the glossy decade it parodies: But the heist/comedy starring old time movie stars Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas takes place in the horrendously colorful midst of the 1980's, celebrated through stunned perspective/mockery of the Reagan Era's loudness, from clothes to music to... just about everything...

All under the stunned, fish-out-of-water perspective of gray-suited ex-cons Harry Doyle and Archie Long, played by polar opposites Lancaster and Douglas, who were never caught until robbing a train in 1955... their very own choo-choo Waterloo...
Starting with an opening credit Kenny Rogers' imitating Lionel Richie tune while showing the boys in their cell, almost freed, leading to an ongoing techno score sounding like a low-rent Harold Faltermeyer, playing even when the boys reminisce upon the good, or rather, bad old days...

Not only don't we get a touch of the Film Noir/Crime Era past, there's simply no escaping the decade in which they've been released into, on parole, which turns out almost worse than prison...
The mellow, reposeful Lancaster is sent to an old age home where the food is awful and bedtime's at 10pm, and yet he still conveniently reunites with his old flame who leads a few exercise classes, while Douglas's maverick story plays more to the comedic male fantasy element: First his moody temperament gets him canned from a few dire jobs, either busing tables full of angry customers to selling Penguins yogurt...

Unlike his more realistic older-acting buddy, Kirk's Archie lands a girl half his age (Darlanne Fluegel), ultimately getting worn out by the abundance of late night sexercise. In a nut-shell, TOUGH GUYS is a cross between COCOON and STRAIGHT TIME.
Meanwhile, with their "old gang" out of commission, including a crippled Billy Barty and a crazy Simmy Bow, the duo are being violently stalked, hunted by a shotgun-wielding, lunatic hit-man that neither ex-con has seen before and, not surprisingly given his talent and eclectic career, Eli Wallach is pretty darn scary (albeit sometimes rather annoying).

For a buddy flick, TOUGH GUYS isn't too shabby, and has most of its soul in Lancaster's character while Douglas, genuinely built like a real ass kicker, plays the "when men were men" Alpha Male, igniting his worn-out partner to help pull-off an impossible caper...
Which they failed at before: robbing the same train from thirty years ago, that just happens to be making its final run. This is where the eclectic montage of breezy comedy ends and we're stuck with a resolution that rushes towards inevitable finality: the boys making their dreams come true along with a young, helpful, pre-SNL Dana Carvey as a nostalgia-driven fan who's also their parole officer...

At this point, the rushed train "robbery" is action-packed and full of surprisingly big-budget 11th hour explosions as pretty much everything and everyone collide into predictable bedlam...
Including the blood-thirsty Wallach and an entirely unlikable Charles Durning as the cop who busted them the first time, wanting revenge for his desk job and to be taken as seriously as our heroes desire for a newspaper headline comeback...
But close your eyes during the last literal minute, fading out on a freeze-frame of the characters after an abundantly vapid freeze-frame moment, which is, unlike the rest of the laidback venture, as bad as it gets.
