If not, then DUMB AND DUMBER TO could have something going for it after all.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back as Lloyd and Harry, and one looks a lot older… The other has a tougher time contorting into any wacky position like the good young days. And that forces the Farrelly Brothers to make up for lost time with a creative story.

As already covered in the trailers, Carrey’s Lloyd, hospitalized for the last two decades, has played a super long joke on Harry...

A strange way to begin a sequel, and yet, if one of the boys weren’t "comatose," too much would have happened in the meantime to not make their second journey seem like a smooth continuation from the original: a road movie with everything thrown into the pot...

And this mild adventure begins with a tease of yet another highway trip where anything is possible, but the duo only make it far enough to serve the basic plot: Harry has a bad liver and needs to get a transplant, and his estranged daughter, adopted by a brilliant scientist with a nefarious trophy wife, is about to give a speech to save mankind and… well… perhaps it's not so simple!

McGuffin plot devices don't really matter since the potential humor relies on Lloyd and Harry being dumber than their surroundings, and still coming out ahead. So putting them inside a convention of young rocket scientists makes perfect sense… Although, throughout the breezy hit-and-miss romp, there's nothing to LOL at this time around, but (start from beginning)

After finding solace through a cheesy magician advertising his magic kit on television, he grows up to be a jerky womanizing millionaire in Las Vegas.

Teamed with childhood partner Anton, the duo are like a platonic Siegfried and Roy without the tigers. They sellout Vegas every night until a sadistic street illusionist/exhibitionist Steve Gray, played with the usual anything-goes physical hijinx by Jim Carrey, pulls off, with cameras rolling, every kind of stunt from getting beat up in public to sleeping on hot coals, turning Burt and Anton’s popular old school act into a thing of the past.

Steve Carell plays Burt as an unlikable over-the-top Rat Pack chauvinist who can only get better with time. Even Olivia Wilde’s sexy assistant Jane, who isn’t aware of how sexy she is, realizes her boss is a shallow one-dimensional buffoon. But when Carrey’s Gray gets more and more popular, Burt hits the skids and winds up with no money and, having split with Anton (Steve Buscemi), he becomes the youngest member of an old age home for Vegas performers. Here he meets his childhood hero Rance Holloway, played by Alan Arkin, and learns to do magic with passion and feeling.

Alas, the Carell/Arkin friendship had the potential of a comedic Luke Skywalker being trained by Obi Wan, but the kinship never really pans out. And before you know it Burt's romantically connected with the gorgeous Jane and, after much too easily making up with Anton, the three complete against Grey for a big Vegas comeback. Since none of the performers seem real enough to be taken seriously, once it’s time to choose which act is legitimate, they're all either doing a parody of David Copperfield, David Blaine, or anyone’s corny uncle who did predictable card tricks on holidays.

A few laughs occur throughout the ninety-minute ride, but with so many talented comedic actors it could have/should have been a much better act.

But it’s actually pretty good. Carrey, who's slowed down in the physical comedy department, is quick enough with put-upon reactions, delivered in droves since the penguins, left by his world-travelling father, are a lots of trouble. Computer-animated, they look quite real, although their humanized mannerisms are completely unbelievable. So to survive this mild-mannered romp both kids and adults can enjoy, you have to suspend disbelief from the start. The antagonist, a zoo keeper with shady intentions, is a reminder that something will go wrong. But it’s the penguins, and their turning Carrey’s apartment into a chilly shambles, that’s the most fun. And side characters including his quirky British secretary who uses the word “P” at least three times per sentence, a pretty ex-wife, and his two children (a happy young boy and a depressed teen girl)… the latter Popper’s reason to keep the penguins in the first place… are reminiscent of an old-school happy-go-lucky kid’s flick And a short featuring ICE AGE’s Scrat (the squirrel), and his unrelenting quest for an acorn causing global alterations, is a nice plus.
