Meanwhile, Jeff Bridges gets his first billing's worth. Since his monopoly blunts the potential training between the duo, perhaps more hands-on experience on the field was intentional over something that might seem too Merlin or Yoda.

Ironically, the biggest distraction is also the most important aspect: Julianne Moore as Mother Malkin, the shape-shifting lead villain that becomes a dragon during battle. Without her stagey input there would be no plot, sure. But the two leads could have fought a handful of witches and it wouldn’t have made any difference since it's the their job. And in a dark horse adventure that settles with comfortable mediocrity over epic grandeur, they do it pretty well. OVERALL RANK: Jedi, Rebel, Droid, Sith.

Seriously speaking, it’s a pretty neat place without any hatred, vengeance, vanity, jealousy or... freedom.

Well that last thing is what young and gifted Jonas (wielding all the powers at once ala DIVERGENT) discovers when he’s given the occupation as the community’s Receiver of Memories... His job is to ride a bike to a lonely place near the cloudy Cliffside where The Giver, played by a Kris Kristofferson-looking Jeff Bridges, provides him with memories of the past to help guide the Elders, led by a monotonic Meryl Streep, with decisions, or something. Yet what Jonas learns is all about the good things absent in the steely paradise: from kissing his girl/friend (Odeya Rush), to riding that sled to some things not so nice, like flashes of war, hunger and rioting.

The story is mysterious and builds nicely until about halfway through when the plot becomes a message so clear, the creative use of B&W cinematography, in gaining various hues, gets too preachy and predictable for its own good. Ironically enough, THE GIVER is far more vibrant without any color.

Upon being killed right after a cool looking shootout, our anti hero descends upward into… not exactly heaven, hell, or purgatory but the Department where little of the film actually takes place.

Much of the action occurs on the city streets as Nick endures his stubborn partner, a veteran “lawman” originally from the Wild West named Roy. Jeff Bridges fits the part so well he forgot he's not Rooster Cogburn in TRUE GRIT. With a slurred alum-tongued speech pattern and stock world-weary gruffness, Bridges makes a good Oscar to his Felix-partner Reynolds, who, surprisingly enough, can also play rough n’ tumble pretty well. After all, Nick has more to fight for – his wife’s being visited by his nefarious ex-partner... here’s where GHOST comes in... and eventually the stolen gold connects to an otherworld plot where, like GHOSTBUSTERS, the undead could paint the town all sorts of bad colors. Some of the funniest parts show Nick and Roy the way humans see them: Roy’s a sexy blonde chick and Nick’s an old Chinese man. At times you’ll want more of the avatars present since Bridges and Reynolds, while likable enough, eventually play second-fiddle to the cartoonish special effects: whenever the dead show themselves in true form they bloat into monstrous Hulk-like beasts.

Thankfully the movie's so short the flaws don’t really matter, and there’s a pretty decent balance of action and comedy, yet the humor doesn’t rely on one-liners as much as Roy's perpetual reluctance to accept Nick – and vice versa. But the best thing about R.I.P.D. is the direction, flowing like an edgy crime flick on its own right with a jazzy/funky soundtrack and a fun, gritty undertone reminiscent of GET SHORTY and OUT OF SIGHT.

And in three acts… like three movies in one… only two work successfully. Jeff Bridges is an injured pro football player who wants his job back, and, without a worthy gig and living a pointless, loveless existence, he takes shifty gambler James Wood’s job to find his missing girlfriend. This is the second act: Bridges seeking the mysterious, extremely gorgeous Rachel Ward in Mexico – and when he finds her, they quickly fall in love; after all, both are attractive, so why not? This is what the movie’s known for: the steamy jungle love scenes between the two stars. And while the audience, and both characters, know they’re in danger, James Wood’s presence, and any underlying threat, isn’t there to add intrigue to the forbidden romance: except one fight against hefty football coach Alex Karras. But when Ward disappears, and Bridges returns home, the pace picks up – the Noir origins playing out in a neatly constructed, fitfully confusing maze of a pawn caught between something neither he, or the audience, understands till the end: which is a satisfying, and surprisingly optimistic, conclusion. And the famous Phil Collins title track, a much bigger hit than the movie itself, plays during the end credits, although variations of the chorus glide in sporadically during love scenes.

But we do know that CLU, played by a youthfully restored Jeff Bridges, is now the dictator (liken to David Warner of yesteryear) and wants Flynn Junior dead. And when son finds dad in a mountainous hideout/bat cave, the film hits a wall and never recovers. A bearded, wizardly Jeff Bridges provides a weak backstory about CLU turning evil for no reason whatsoever. This followed by a glitzy battle in a discotheque with pulsating rave music. And more long bouts of dialog follow, leading to a quick, dull climax. The character-driven original, though technologically dated… made when home computers were rare… brought the viewer to a fantastic otherworld with an unflagging pace. But now, since computers are common, it all resembles a video game… and a boring one at that.

But with the exception of a few scenes, it's a pale imitation of the John Wayne classic. The plot has an assertive fourteen-year old girl who, in order to track her father's killer, hires a violent U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. The entire first act, setting up the three leads... also including Matt Damon as an uptight Texas Ranger with aims of his own... never settles into any worthwhile communication. By the time the search is underway, we hardly know the characters: each at odds but without seeming genuinely motivated. The villains are an afterthought, and antihero Jeff Bridges, as the legendary tough guy, is more a sloppy town drunk slurring tales that, if visualized (and comprehended), might make a more interesting film. At attempting to make an arthouse Western, the Coens failed twice: it's not intelligent nor involving or exciting. And the beautiful scenery feels condensed and wasted throughout.
